Wonderful team of high trained people. Thank you to all my nurses who made this scary time much easier to bear: Nick, Ashley, Jan, Bella, Conner, Travis, and Lacey. I don't know how you all have the both the patience and the empathy to do what you do day in and day out, but it is much appreciated. Also thanks to Dr Ahmed who was to both figure out what was wrong and fix it quickly. Your whole team is amazing... While I don't wish what happened to me to happen to anybody else, if it does, you should hope to be near this hospital.

I visited the hospital emergency department and once again felt dissatisfied with the service at reception. The receptionist, Marlon, showed little willingness to assist, even though there were very few patients waiting. It is unacceptable that in an emergency hospital, patients —including children— have to wait so long before being seen. A hospital should always prioritize timely and compassionate care, especially in urgent situations. I truly hope the administration addresses this issue, as the community depends on reliable and dignified service.

Accepted Insurance

Cottage Outpatient Center of San Luis Obispo works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

I went on my sister’s girls trip in Solvang, and the last night I began aspirating while trying to sleep. My sister, a UCLA registered nurse, along with 2 of her coworkers, who are also registered nurses at UCLA, witnessed what was happening. My sister assisted in calling the VA 24-hour nurse hotline to confirm what they had seen and to determine the best course of action, since I am a veteran and far from home. Based on their guidance, they drove me from Solvang to the hospital in Santa Barbara, expecting quality care for me as the nurse’s sister. When I arrived, I explained to the nurse that I had been on a GLP-1 patch for over a week, hadn’t had a bowel movement in five days, and had vomited that night. I was aspirating repeatedly when trying to sleep. The nurse asked, with what appeared to be a patronizing tone, if I was a nurse and if I knew what aspiration meant. She seemed surprised when I explained I did, noting that I have a history of GERD for over seven years. While she mentioned that GLP-1 slows digestion, which I acknowledged, I felt that my experience and symptoms weren’t fully taken seriously. The doctor evaluated me and discussed the possibility of sleep apnea, asking if I snored. I clarified that my current issue was separate from that and also mentioned that I was flying later that day. He examined my abdomen and offered treatment either immediately or at home. I requested treatment at that time, following the VA nurse’s advice recommending urgent intervention. After I asked for an X-ray, the obstruction in my bowel was identified, and I received an enema and laxative. I appreciate that the team followed through efficiently and addressed the obstruction, which was causing severe discomfort, especially compounded by my GERD. However, I felt that overall communication and professionalism could have been better. I had to volunteer much of my medical history, and my experience with aspiration seemed questioned or minimized. At times, the staff appeared skeptical of my knowledge, even when I was simply describing my own symptoms. My sister, a UCLA nurse, was surprised by this approach, considering the high standard of care and patient-centered culture she is accustomed to in her own hospital. Overall, the treatment eventually addressed my medical issue, but I hope the staff could improve in listening to patients, considering their medical history, and providing care in a more professional and empathetic manner.
