About Crestwyn Behavioral Health Hospital

Memphis, Tennessee, is known for blues and Elvis, but it’s also the home of Crestwyn Behavioral Health Hospital. The hospital offers inpatient and outpatient mental health and addiction treatment for adults. Treatment includes dual diagnosis, where someone has both a mental health disorder and substance use issues. There’s also a specific program for seniors. Paying for care is simple because the hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and multiple private insurance plans.

Inpatient treatment at Crestwyn may include medically monitored detox, after which clients shift to individual, group, and family therapy to address the causes of substance use and mental health concerns. The hospital also provides mental health medication if needed. Group sessions may focus on the 12 step methods, healthy relationships, goal setting, and other recovery skills.

Crestwyn also has a partial hospitalization program (PHP) which meets from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday for up to four weeks. There is also an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that meets three days a week, three hours per session, for up to four weeks. Either of these can be a good transition from inpatient care into independent living.

Reviews are mixed, so be sure to look them over before making a final decision about treatment at Crestwyn.

Does morbid curiosity get the best of you? Do you want a fully immersive experience in what it feels like to lose your dignity one bureaucratic procedure at a time? Look no further! Crestwyn has all the amazing amenities to make you feel like you’re in the world’s worst escape room, except the only thing you’re escaping is your will to live. From the spider infestation to the gourmet starvation diet, every detail is crafted to make sure you’re too tired to complain. Especially if you have any dietary restrictions! Forget basic human rights. At Crestwyn, they’re just suggestions! The staff has mastered the art of saying “we care about your safety” while gaslighting you into questioning if you even exist. Don’t worry, they definitely read your chart, right after playing a quick game of “Guess Who’s Suicidal” at the nurses’ station. And don’t you worry about seeing those pesky therapists and doctors, you most definitely won’t! You’ll spend your days sitting in the day room coloring, too drugged up to think a single thought. Isn’t it amazing that a self proclaimed mental hospital offers absolutely no mental health services? And the food? Ever wanted to know what it feels like to be slowly digested by a vending machine from the inside out? Get ready for five days of “haven’t eaten” chic. It’s the look everyone wants!

This makes me very concerned reading the reviews they're terrible I have a son that's going through this process right now he had to stay for one week now he's doing the outpatient program I live in a different state I'm 24 hours away for a drive time this makes me so concerned cuz when I last spoke to him on the phone he said he feels like he has to do this outpatient program or they would put him back in there and I stated to him that they cannot put you back in there unless you harm to yourself or someone else and he says I know that Dad but they have judges and lawyers and stuff and then making him feel that way, how can someone reach out and get help when this is the situation that they have to deal with people have real problems dealing with this kind of situation could only make those problems worse so now as a dad I feel like I need to be there to help him through this process but with no visitations and everything being done by the counselors that are very overwhelmed I assume this makes me feel terrible as a dad helpless

I had a very disappointing experience at Crestwyn Behavioral Health. Staff seemed disorganized and uncommunicative. I was ignored and anxious the entire time. This facility needs to improve communication and intake efficiency to better serve people in crisis.

Accepted Insurance

Crestwyn Behavioral Health Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs enable clients to receive care without leaving their home, workplace, and community. Clients typically receive intensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family therapy. Many programs promote clients' long-term sobriety through recovery-focused life skills training and ancillary services, such as peer coaching. Medication assisted treatment (MAT), including medication induction and maintenance, are common in outpatient care. Most facilities offer multiple levels of care to accommodate clients' evolving needs, including intensive outpatient (IOP) and standard outpatient programming.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehabs are designed principally for clients who require intensive supervision and support, including clients who have just completed detox, clients in early recovery, and clients at an elevated risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment helps clients stabilize following detox and prepares them to step-down into outpatient and/or community-based care. Clients reside at the facility for the duration of their program and engage in extensive addiction counseling and education. Many programs also offer evidence-based complementary therapies.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program typically have abstained from drugs or alcohol for a period of weeks or months and have completed high-level (often inpatient) treatment. Drug rehab aftercare is designed to support clients in maintaining their sobriety as they re-engage with their ordinary lives at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Services are highly individualized and evolve with clients' changing needs, but generally include peer coaching and relapse prevention.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
To keep you safe and comfortable during the detoxification process, a medically assisted detox provides you with a team of medical professionals who can provide the necessary medications to treat any potential withdrawal symptoms. Suddenly stopping chronic abuse of substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids can have uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Safe detox requires 24-hour clinical care in Tennessee. This is due to the health risks that are involved during withdrawal. As the brain reacts to the absence of the drug, severe symptoms can occur, depending on the type of drug used. For instance, alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal may result in seizures. Fortunately, supervised care in a clinical setting can provide the necessary treatment to avoid health risks and allow you to complete detox safely.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills training teaches you how to cope with challenging situations in non destructive ways. This crucial piece of drug rehab in Tennessee gives you tools for decision making, relationship building, and self care.

This is very alarming to read all these reviews. As a Mother with a son that’s experiencing depression and anxiety for nine years, and to bring your loved ones there to get help is alarming. This really is concerning…. We as loving parents don’t want to see our loved ones go through this. We put them in YOUR hands. My prayers are with the families🙏🏻. Not all of the people who works in these facilities aren’t impatient. You have to have a heart for this kind of work. The feedback that’s coming from the Company of this facility is basically saying the same thing with each bad review. Action speaks louder than words. MEMPHIS FACILITIES, WE GOT TO DO BETTER! I’m not speaking to ALL FACILITIES, But these reviews here…are questionable. One of the facilities I have had experienced with and has decent reviews is Alliance Healthcare on Broad.

My story is short but completely honest. I have an anxiety and panic disorder and feel the need for therapy sometimes. Lately, I’ve been struggling to sleep so I wanted to look into an IOP program like one I went into 10 years ago which has shut down. I walked in and the door locked behind me. The place smelled so bad that I couldn’t believe it. The bathrooms are locked. I sat there looking around at how uninviting the place and people were and I told them I had a family emergency and I needed to leave. Now, remember, I walked in voluntarily to look into outpatient counseling. I walked to the desk thinking I could freely leave. NO MAM. A nurse had to ask me if I was suicidal or homicidal, forced me to sign a form then unlock the door so I could leave. No way would I go there. Never!!!!!!

As a RN, I would not recommend this facility to my dog. A family member of mine, a teen, was admitted there & kept for 9 days. This child was voluntarily admitted there, & I was immediately concerned due to the inconsistent info provided, the lack of proactive communication, & the complete absence of clinical collaboration with established outpatient therapist & psychiatrist. I understand the responsibility healthcare providers have toward patients, esp. toward minors, a vulnerable patient population. When I attempted to schedule regular visitation, we were informed that Crestwyn "doesn't offer visitation;" our only option to see our child would occur at her 'therapist's' 'first availability' for a 'family therapy session' SIX DAYS after admission. During a phone call, our child stated that one physician noted that discharge would be very soon. Our child stated that then, (completely unbeknownst to us) her medical care was switched to a different physician who informed our child that discharge would not occur before next week. Our child also stated that they overheard members of the staff state: "They are the guinea pigs because we’ve never done this with minors and everything’s changed." Regarding the 'therapy' received there, our child stated that "no one is helping me or telling me anything," and that the ‘therapist’, is "judgey & not trying to help." Our child also recalled that they couldn’t really do anything in the gym 1 day bc of a fight that occurred earlier, & "there was blood everywhere." When recalling another incident, our child recalled another patient who made our child feel uncomfortable by "talking about being w/ different girls. He said he hates being rejected by girls, & it makes him want to bash their heads in." This other patient kept staring at our child. Our child reported this incident to a Crestwyn staff member but nothing was done. I believe our child was traumatized by the experience at Crestwyn. We voiced our concerns while our child was inpatient, even writing an email to staff leadership, regarding patient safety, lack of clear and consistent communication, lack of collaboration in her care plan, and lack of any info regarding discharge planning w/ the 'therapist' and the patient 'advocate.' We requested multiple times to speak to our child's physician to discuss the care plan, only to receive a call EIGHT DAYS after admission only to be provided w/ nonspecific, unhelpful, generic answers to our questions regarding our child's treatment plan. This is extremely disappointing, as I am well-informed on the positive impact that proactive discharge planning, transparency in care, & collaboration in healthcare decision making has on patient outcomes. We no longer felt safe with our child being admitted at Crestwyn any longer, so on DAY NINE (with no information on anticipated discharge date), we went to the facility and demanded our child's discharge. While inpatient, our child expressed concern over not being included in their care and not being informed on what is going on with their care; we also have felt like we have been excluded in our child's care from day one. We attempted to communicate these concerns using Crestwyn's preferred line of communication (which is also unclear - we were directed and redirected multiple times between the patient advocate, therapist, and nurse's station) but received no reliable answers, as they changed daily. Furthermore, we have concerns regarding our child's therapist's credentials (per the TN Department of Health licensure verification database and abuse registry). In the nine days our child was at Crestwyn, there was no communication w/ their outpatient care team, limited and unreliable information provided to us, & no indication of a potential discharge date or even a plan for a potential discharge date. We never heard back from Crestwyn leadership, & we are formally moving forward with complaints to our insurance provider, the State of TN, and credentialing offices. If you want to do the same, please contact the Joint Commission at 800-994-6610.

My son went there .. no insurance 72 hr hold. I paid $5000 to keep him there Never spoke with a doctor / no diagnosis — because money ran out kicked him out. This was JAN. He is still without help and barely talking walking around with blanket around him and other strange behaviors. There is NO HELP in Memphis. He is slipping through the cracks. Most nurses were nice

Recently left this place a few days ago and I’ll let everyone who I come into contact with to NOT go here or send their loved ones. Similar to what I’ve seen in other reviews I also experienced unprofessional and condescending behavior from the staff. Many of them treated myself and other patients like we were prisoners. I felt as if I was being punished for my mental health issues. To be honest I feel like I have more mental issues than I did before I went to Crestwyn

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for offering this feedback, though it is very troubling to read. The services we provide are designed to be personalized and comprehensive so that true healing can begin. Absolutely abysmal. I would give it zero stars if I could. Unprofessionalism beyond anything I’ve ever seen before. Condescending, threatening, and unhelpful staff. They were out of soap, towels, socks, and scrubs. I was physically attacked by a patient and nurses simply looked the other way. Was mocked for trying to read through my paperwork instead of just signing everything immediately. Such a horrible and wasteful experience. If you genuinely love and care about a person do not send them here.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We appreciate you sharing this feedback, though reading it is deeply concerning. We strive to provide the highest-quality care, and in order for us to ensure that we do that, we need as much feedback as possible. I would give crestwyn behavioral health, a Zero rating if I could. Don’t send your loved ones there. They basically babysat me and fed me for 10 days and that was it And charged me $3000. They did not give me any of my medications that I normally take on a daily basis for the whole 10 days. I take blood pressure medicine , high cholesterol medicine, antidepressant , mood stabilizer and two pain pills every day for low back chronic pain. What medical doctor takes away your blood pressure medication for 10 days? The psychiatrist at Chrestwyn Does. I was there to get better because I was suicidal and they didn’t give me any anti-depressants for the whole 10 days that I was there. When the door shuts behind you on your first day in, don’t think that you can turn around and walk out because you cannot. You cannot change your mind about being there. My first night there, they left me in a room by myself when everybody went to bed I finally had to ask where I go to sleep, and then she wanted me to make my own bed up with the folded Sheets. If you decide, you don’t want to be there shortly after you walk in the door, which I did , the only way you can leave is to call the police And they don’t like it when you call the police. But it works the police will come get you Because they cannot hold you against your will. You are only allowed to use the phone certain times of the day like twice a day. One of my fellow patient called the police and they came and got her . After that, we were not allowed to use the phones, We were being punished because she called the police. You can’t make this stuff up! I did not have any therapy for the whole 10 days. I was there. That’s crazy. Another fellow patient hung himself in his room during the 10 days I was there. Where were the employees who were supposed to be watching us. Oh, and I almost forgot they make you undress in front of two or three other people (Employees)of the opposite sex and bend over. I hope and pray that someone takes over. Crestwyn Behavioral health and turns it into a facility that cares about their patients and Teaches them through therapy classes And basically does the opposite of what they are doing now.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are thankful that you were willing to offer this feedback, but reading it is concerning. We rely on feedback to make sure that we are providing superior clinical care, and it is important that we gather as much information as possible. If you would be willing to speak directly and provide additional details, we would greatly appreciate it. You can reach us at FeedBack@Crestwynbh.com. Thank you. <br>
