About Deer Valley Counseling

Deer Valley Counseling is a private mental health and substance abuse treatment program in Phoenix, Arizona, just south of Rose Mofford Sports Park. They believe true treatment helps clients do more than cope with symptoms, by reinforcing personal strengths and happiness. They serve clients of all ages.

Deer Valley Counseling’s solution-focused treatment helps clients analyze their problems from an outside perspective and identify healthy coping methods through practical skills. Counselors guide clients through treatment and help reinforce positive thinking. Services are provided on an outpatient basis.

An outpatient program is a less restrictive form of care for clients who have completed a higher level of care or who are otherwise stable, with mild symptoms. Since clients at this level don’t need around-the-clock supervision, they continue to live independently at home. Appointments are available on a flexible schedule to accommodate busy clients.

The core of outpatient treatment is counseling, which can occur in individual and group settings. In addition to substance abuse and mental health counseling, Deer Valley Counseling can help with anger management, bullying behaviors, cutting and other forms of self harm, domestic violence, and sex addiction. Additionally, they provide marriage, family, and post-divorce counseling.

Deer Valley Counseling accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. However, clients should always confirm their coverage with their insurance provider before entering a rehab program, as in network and out of network benefits can vary.

First, I should be up front. Jamie Nettles is my dad, and Sandra is my step-mom. I don't want anyone to think that I'm trying to be sneaky. With that said, Sandra acted as my counselor growing up. She's the kind of person that you'll feel comfortable talking to. I remember many times that Sandra would choose to wait for us at a bench in the mall or some such place, and when would get back a stranger would be with her telling Sandra their life story. It's just something about Sandra. Now, I do feel I should warn you. If you are looking for a councilor to just sit and listen to you, then you are looking in the wrong place. Sandra will support you, help you, listen to you, but she will tell you when you are fooling yourself too. Many, many, many times, more than I care to remember, Sandra would call me out on something, and I would get so frustrated and angry because I didn't want what she was telling me to be true, but after some time (a few minutes to a few days depending on my stubbornness) I would realize how right she was.In short, Sandra is a great counselor if you want to improve. If you sincerely want to feel better, to handle life better, to simply live better, then Deer Valley counseling is where you want to go.

Accepted Insurance

Deer Valley Counseling works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Arizona is the process of treating individuals who are dependent on a particular addictive drug. Because addiction is complex, this treatment typically includes a variety of interventions that address the many physical and emotional issues involved.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

One thing I look for when being with a counselor is confidentiality, and the one that treated me had it for sure! If you want to improve, well this is the place to open up and feel safe about it. Front desk is very professional also.

My experience at Deer Valley Counseling was not the traditional counseling experience - I sought out Sandra Nettles not because I was seeking out mental health assistance at the time, but because I was a young counselor in need of training and mentorship as I began my journey in the field. I was privileged to be mentored by Sandra Nettles for approximately one year, and it remains one of the most fulfilling professional experiences I've ever had. During my time as a counseling initiate, Sandra was a patient and kind mentor, but she was also firm and exacting - she prided herself on providing her clients with high quality mental health care, and often made it clear to me that she would hold me to the same high standards to which she held herself. My time at Deer Valley Counseling was transformative, because it challenged me to grow as both a person and a professional - the organization opens its doors to individuals from all walks of life, and Sandra proved instrumental in helping me identify my professional strengths, weaknesses, interests, and insecurities as I started to take my first steps as a practicing counselor. All these years later, I continue to utilize the lessons and the skills that Sandra has taught me - I also continue to be grateful for the time, energy, and patience she demonstrated with me as I began the process of creating and shaping my professional identity. I'd like to close by saying that I heartily recommend Sandra to anyone seeking an outstanding mentor or a skilled mental health provider. As someone who has seen her excel in both these roles, I honestly cannot recommend her enough.

I found the Deer Valley Counseling's office to look unprofessional and dirty. When you first walk in, they have a Christmas tree that they leave up year round. The office is not welcoming. Even the counseling room is unwelcoming and dark. You sit on an uncomfortable chair in a storage room full of holiday decorations. When I had counseling sessions, they also had groups going on in the next room. You could hear the session and the group counselor's dog barking. I felt uncomfortable sharing things because other people could hear me. After one session, my counselor brought out my plan of action sheet to sign. The receptionist was able to view my plan of action. This made me feel uncomfortable and that my privacy was violated. I liked my counselor, but will not be returning. The whole place was weird and gross.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We know we are not the right place for everyone and we are sorry you did not find our office welcoming. We strive to make our office a comforting, homey place and evidently we did not accomplish this for you. We hope you find another office more to your liking. Best wishes and good luck!

Be extremely careful. These people are dangerous!!! For starters the owner, Jamie Nettles, is about as lazy and incompetent as a person can get. He even complains about how his business cards that he uses to set appointments cost him 25 cents. So he likes to reuse them. The Nurse Practitioner, Lynnette Hjalmervik, went on and on about her son for the two years I saw her. It felt like some sessions were more about him. She even brought up the issue of abortion relating to her son and her religious beliefs on the matter which I found quite disturbing. She is also quite lazy herself. I will be obtaining my medical records and posting everything I can online about the experience I had with her. This is why I am now a Web Developer. So please be warned and be careful!!!!. Lynnette Hjalmervik is a danger to her patients. She changed my medication, demanded that I not go to the hospital over side effects, which I ended up having (and they were severe) and contact her instead. Which I did, and she avoided me for nearly 48 hrs while having the owner lie for her. There are much better options out there. I am so thankful that I made a change. My life is much better for it. I will never let these individuals off the hook. Be Well, James

Due to confidentiality requirements, we cannot respond directly to comments such as this. Everyone here is gratified when someone gets the help they need and disappointed when they do not. We take a client's needs very seriously. We do not lie to clients. We hope that the reviewer is getting the services they need.

I went to them, the front desk very professional the counselor on the other hand started to hypothesize making almost accusations about may every day thinking I think that you need more than one time to get to know someone. I will not go back to the same counselor.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are sorry you did not find our counseling to your liking. We try to not waste the client's time and money but some people are not comfortable with the speed of this approach. We hope you have found a counselor more to your liking. Best of luck to you in all you do!

I've been receiving counseling from Deer Valley for years now. I started off needing intensive counseling and now I only go in quarterly. I'm so happy with how far I have advanced and how incredibly instrumental Sandra Nettles was to my care. I could probably do without but I have found wonderful balance with my quarterly sessions. I actually encourage any PTSD patient to do the same.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are very pleased that you are happy with your progress and wish you continued success in this and all that you do!

Deer Valley Counseling is a JOKE! When I scheduled my first appointment, they took a $100 deposit to "hold" my appointment. When, my entire family came down with the flu, including myself, I had to cancel the morning of my appointment. I was then told that I would lose the $100 if I did not reschedule the appointment for sometime the next two weeks. I couldn't do that because I was only able to attend on the weekends. Each weekend upcoming was booked for me. So, I lost the $100. I NEVER received full disclosure of this policy. Had I known their business practices, I would have never given my credit card number to them. It's the same as handing over personal information over to a criminal because they stole from me. Who in the world wants to co to a place that obviously cares ONLY about the $$$ and not about the patient? Not me. Way to make prospective patients feel comfortable and that you actually care about them Deer Valley Counseling!

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are sorry you did not have a good experience here. We strive to inform everyone of our no-show policy. We do care very much about the well-being of our clients. We hope that you found another office more to your liking. Best wishes in all you do!
