About Memorial Hospital

Memorial Hospital is an acute care hospital offering a range of services for children, teens and adults in Jacksonville, Florida. If you’re an adult struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, you can visit their Mental Health and Wellness department to find help. They provide partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs to help people overcome their condition. There’s also a special inpatient program just for seniors. They accept private insurance, self payment, Medicare and Medicaid.

If you need a high level of support you’ll start out in their partial hospitalization program. I like this program because they customize their treatments to meet your needs. Most people need some combination of individual therapy, group therapy and medication management. You’ll attend sessions for five hours a day, five days a week.

The same services are available in their intensive outpatient program, but the schedule isn’t quite as vigorous. In this program you’ll focus mostly on group therapy. They offer different kinds of therapeutic groups to help you find peer support, encouragement and accountability. In your sessions you’ll share your experiences, hear from others and learn life skills to help you reach your goals.

Older adults who need round the clock care can stay at the Senior Pavillion. This unit offers 24 hour monitoring, daily psychiatry sessions and family therapy to help clients work through their mental health struggles and achieve recovery.

Accepted Insurance

Memorial Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Pro: Great staff and everyone was incredible. Con: My room was always hot at night. They kept saying they would call facilities but it ever seemed to be much cooler. To be 2 days post surgery and laying in your sweat at night is not a good place to be.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Tim, we regret that the experience didn’t meet your full expectations. Please contact us directly at 904-702-6126 to discuss further.

had a great experience at HCA Memorial Hospital’s Labor and Delivery unit. Nurse Kristi was amazing during my delivery—she stayed calm, handled everything with care, and made sure I felt supported the entire time. She was also incredibly attentive with my after-labor care. Nurse Janet was also wonderful with the postpartum care and made sure I was comfortable and well-informed. What really impressed me was how closely their care aligned with my birth plan—even though I never had to hand it over. They just understood and respected my preferences from the start. I also appreciated that they weren’t pushy or weird about post-birth vaccine recommendations. It was clear they genuinely care about their patients and love what they do. Highly recommend this team for anyone looking for a supportive and respectful birth experience.

Nurse practitioner was rude, kept over speaking on my husband who was trying to explain what was going on as i had an ear infection but my jaw was in pain from my ear. Finally got relief and was waiting over 30 minutes only to find out we were forgotten about. Mind you it was 1:45am when we arrived and we left 4am.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are very sorry to hear about this experience. Patient satisfaction is important to us at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital, so we will make every effort to address any concerns. All in all a typical hospital visit with some hurry up and wait, but the bright light was posed by the RN in charge of my procedure. Brittany with a Y was spectacular! Other staffers went about their business in a professional manner, but Brittany shone from the first couple of moments. I have spent more than my fair share of time in ERs and post surgery situations and have found two distinct cultures in those areas. The first is a condition where all the staff do what they are supposed to do then tuck into themselves until the next requirement arises. The second is what I saw Friday where your people did what they were supposed to do in between friendly exchanges between each other and the patients. I heard more laughter and kidding there than any other hospital besides field hospitals in Vietnam where humor literally saves lives among both staff and patients. I get the feeling that someone there understands that a good work environment equates to superb patient care! Thanks from an old fogie!

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are delighted to see this review, Terry. Thank you for the kind comments! We will be sure to pass them along to our teams.

Had bypass surgery felt like they rushed me thru the front door and kicked me out the back door. Luckily my mom was there to assist with my recovery. A couple of years later and I still suffer from non-binding sternum. If I could do over I would have passed. I googled the doctor not the hospital. My big Mistake.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:

The heart staff are friendly, welcoming, comforting, assuring and kind. They explained the procedure clearly, and it went just as they described. The physician was just as kind and reassuring. The hospital should be proud of this particular department.

Hello, I came to the hospital by ambulance at 3.40 on May 15th. I had a traffic accident but no one cared about me. They took me off the stretcher and asked me to sit on a chair. I sat there and waited for almost 1 hour. Then they took me to the bed. I waited there for a long time. No one cared. I couldn't stand it anymore. Finally, I left the hospital writhing in pain. The doctor still didn't come. It was a very ridiculous incident. Also, the two secretaries of that day were very strange. They kept laughing at everything sarcastically and looking at me suggestively. They didn't answer any of the questions I asked. I was very upset. They literally discriminated against people.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Zeynep Basak, thank you for this feedback and please know this is not acceptable by our standards. I have shared this feedback with our administration, so we can work to improve. I apologize that we fell short of your expectations, and if there is any other feedback you'd like to share, I encourage you to give us a call at 904-702-6126.
