What motivates someone to choose a career in healthcare whether as a doctor, nurse, or any other role? Is it a true calling to help others, to show compassion, or to make a meaningful impact in someone s life? After my recent experience at Metropolitan Hospital, I find myself questioning whether these core values are truly prioritized here.As an aide caring for a 90-year-old man with dementia, my priority is ensuring he receives the care, comfort, and dignity he deserves. Unfortunately, the only genuinely compassionate and helpful person I encountered during our visit was the cleaning lady. The medical staff, on the other hand, showed a shocking lack of empathy and professionalism. Doctors and nurses appeared distant and detached, as though they were simply going through the motions instead of offering the care that s needed. The lack of communication and understanding from the medical team made the experience incredibly frustrating and distressing not just for the patient, but for those of us who are there to advocate for him. It s disheartening to think that those who are supposed to provide comfort and care seem more focused on their own attitudes and egos than on the well-being of the patients they are meant to serve. We came to this hospital hoping to receive the right care, but instead, we left feeling like just another number. The disregard for patient emotions, especially those of a vulnerable elderly man with dementia, and the absence of compassion is completely unacceptable. It s a shame that a place meant for healing and support felt more like a factory than a hospital. If you re considering care here, be prepared for a frustrating and dehumanizing experience.

The dermatologist sent a prescription to a pharmacy that does not accept insurance and I called to transfer that prescription to CVS and I have 5 days and he still hasn't sent it, this hospital is really useless, they don't care at all, but the hospital realized my complaint, and they automatically changed my doctor and thank God they gave me my medications, they apologized a thousand times, and everything was fine, because of my complaint, now that's why I'm raising the stars

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I'm thankful for this place and for the counselor that treated me while I was there. During my stay I always felt supported, I knew that the people treating me were reliable, and I loved the friendly care the staff gave me as well. Thank you for doing the best you could for ... Read More

Would be a zero star for me. Do not say no to the staffs recommendations cause if you do they will treat you like you're not human. They do not want you to say no to anything they suggest you do to your body. Especially during giving birth. Horrible people. Be careful.

The receptionist at the Main entrance today 4/20 at 3:30pm was very hostile towards us, throwing ID’s, rolling her eyes, making negative comments under her breath... We did not give her any trouble yet she was attending us with an attitude. We have heard many complaints about this lady in particular, you don’t know what people are going through and being rude like this is very unprofessional. Keeping her on staff reflects poorly on the hospital.

Trash labor and delivery. These people ignored my pregnancy for two weeks straight and never picked up the phone in L&D for me or my family’s nurse. Absolutely atrocious. Dont give birth here ladies!!!! Go to Jacobi or Montefiore !

DO NOT GO TO THE ER IN THIS HOSPITAL a couple months ago I came here cause I was throwing up and had a horrible stomach pain on my upper belly button and this was at night the entire medical team was neglecting lord if I wasn’t sick that day I would’ve recorded and taken pictures of each staff there they diagnosed me with appendicitis that their was something stuck on my appendix and it was about to burst I got upset that they didn’t bother giving medication a chance I got a ct scan the people told me I was ok but later the surgeon was like something was stuck I was in severe pain so I went for the surgery a month after the surgery I had a check up and the surgen was like turns out it wasn’t anything blocking it and I got really upset because they took advantage of my situation and only made it seem like surgery was the option and it was going to erupt I will be taking further action on this case cause they basically neglected me that entire day and misdiagnosed me so if you come to this hospital your not gonna be saved. FYI if you come here they will not save you they will give you false diagnosis and something I noticed of this hospital is everyone in the 3rd floor gets falsely diagnosed with diabetes they see your blood sugar is slightly high because you ate a chocolate bar before coming here they immediately prescribe you insulin and pills and I noticed these people take a lot of advantage of non English speakers and scare them with these false diagnosis.

The outpatient psychiatric unit is the most terrible place I have been to for psychiatric needs. The psychiatrists there are the worst, they also literally almost never sent my meds correctly to the pharmacy leading to A LOT of wasted time going back and forth to the clinic and pharmacy. They also felt the need to change my medications multiple times despite them working for me, me being stable on them, and having been on them for years leading to one of the worst relapses in my mental health and anxiety.

Switched from Mount Sinai and I’m glad I did. I’m in and out for scheduled appointments and the ER works pretty fast. I recently got a Septoplasty done at Metro and everyone from the surgeons to the nurses and residents were great. Not sure why the bad reviews but I love Metropolitan Hospital.
