About Peace Valley Counseling Center – South Charleston

If you’re looking for real down-to-earth mental health support in Charleston, West Virginia, especially if you’re struggling with substance use, Peace Valley Counseling Center might be exactly the safe landing place you’ve been needing. Located right in the heart of South Charlestown, this local counseling hub is known for being warm, welcoming and deeply rooted in the belief that healing is always possible, no matter how far gone things feel. They see kids as young as three all the way up through seniors, and their range of services is wide enough to meet just about anyone where they are.

Trauma-Focused Support

Counseling here covers everything from PTSD and depression to relationship struggles, family conflict and behavioral disorders. What really stands out, though, is their focus on trauma and their use of EMDR therapy, which can be a great approach for people who are looking to recover from addiction-related trauma. They also provide psychological evaluations and offer both traditional therapy and Christian counseling, depending on your beliefs and values.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Peace Valley works with people facing substance use issues, often intertwined with other mental health concerns like anxiety, depression or unresolved trauma. That dual diagnosis focuses can be critical when addiction is just the surface of something much deeper. The fact that they offer EMDR therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and family systems work means they’re not just testing the symptoms, they’re helping you get to the root too.

Local Roots, Real Experience

With more than 23 years of experience, Jody Hensley brings a deep well of expertise and empathy to her practice. She’s not only a licensed counselor but someone who sees her work as a calling, not just a job. She’s even learning American Sign Language to serve more people in her community. That kind of personal commitment isn’t easy to find.

I was ordered to attend conflict counseling at Peace Valley Counseling following the complex and difficult circumstances, which involved a history of manipulation, psychological abuse, and an instance of domestic battery. Unfortunately, my experience at Peace Valley Counseling was far from supportive or therapeutic. The counselor, Jody, frequently escalated tensions during sessions, particularly by commenting on my emotional responses, even in the presence of the person who had been abusive toward me. Rather than creating a safe space for vulnerability, she seemed to provoke heightened emotions, leaving me feeling intimidated and criticized, especially when I became tearful. Jody expressed concern about my ability to control my emotions in front of my child, which added to my discomfort and anxiety during these sessions. There were also notable issues with professionalism and accuracy. Jody struggled to keep the details of our situation accurate, which was unsettling given the sensitive nature of our discussions. Additionally, she spent considerable time sharing personal anecdotes and referring to her ex-husbands in dismissive terms ("idiot 1" and "idiot 2"), which felt unprofessional and unhelpful to the purpose of our sessions.Rather than fostering constructive dialogue or understanding, my experience at Peace Valley Counseling unfortunately deepened the divide between myself and my co-parent. For anyone seeking genuine conflict resolution in a respectful and balanced environment, I cannot recommend Peace Valley Counseling based on my experience.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients who are leaving detox or intensive inpatient care often transition into a rehab aftercare program. Outpatient treatment is among the most common rehab aftercare services, but clients often continue to receive support long after being discharged from formal treatment. Clients' long-term care plans are highly individualized and designed to evolve with the clients' changing needs. Case managers and care teams typically work with the client to design their unique care strategy.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Within a group therapy session, men and women in West Virginia can see successful recovery behaviors modeled by their peers. This provides inspiration and practical examples of coping skills that manage addiction in the community. Ultimately, this promotes sobriety and helps you attain sustainable recovery.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
