For one whole year I sought the assistance I am entitled to receive to no avail. I had an appointment for 10:30 this morning and I had to leave at 11:30 to go to the dentist. In other words, I sat in the lobby for a whole hour for nothing.

I went there because I had an appointment. When I got there they didn’t even have the appointment I was supposed to have. The people that answer the phones at this person is not doing their job and dispute in my appointment. Really bad business to do business with.

I want to share my experience with South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) in Columbia, so others are aware of the difficulties I faced. I have been working with VR for over seven months, and despite being found eligible for services, I still do not have an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE). From the beginning, my experience has been frustrating and harmful: 1. Delays and Lack of Communication: • I have received multiple extension letters, which I never signed or consented to — this is required under federal law. • Emails, phone calls, and requests for updates have mostly been ignored. • I had to request a new counselor because my first one, Antwan, refused to communicate or provide updates for nearly a month. 2. Denial of Advocate / Emergency Contact: • I gave written consent for my emergency contact to speak with VR staff on my behalf. • My counselor, Kelly, refused to communicate with my emergency contact, denying me my legal right to representation. 3. Unnecessary and Delayed Requirements: • I was forced to get a cardiologist to sign a form (219 form), even though the form clearly states any MD or DO can sign. • This unnecessary requirement caused weeks of delay, despite the form already being completed by my primary care doctor. 4. Health and Emotional Harm: • I have POTS and fibromyalgia, and the constant stress from VR delays has caused flares and worsening symptoms. • I have repeatedly emailed and asked for help, explaining that the stress was harming my health, but my concerns were ignored. • This experience has been emotionally exhausting, stressful, and deeply hurtful, leaving me feeling isolated and unsupported. 5. Transportation Barriers: • I live outside city limits, have no car, and there is no nearby public transportation. • Despite this, VR has failed to arrange transportation for me to participate in their programs, which is their legal obligation. 6. Overall Mismanagement: • I’ve had two counselors in seven months, with little progress. • My repeated requests for my IPE, resources, and support have been ignored or delayed unnecessarily. • I escalated my case to the Ombudsman and CAP, but delays continue, showing systemic issues within this office. Summary: South Carolina VR in Columbia has been incredibly frustrating, unhelpful, and harmful. Their staff, particularly Kelly, have mismanaged my case, ignored my requests, and caused both emotional and physical harm. I would not recommend relying on this office if you are seeking timely support, assistance, or guidance. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND THE FEDERAL LAWS VOC REHAB MUST FOLLOW!! Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Choosing a drug rehab in South Carolina helps you overcome drug dependency, learn how to manage cravings, and obtain the tools needed to prevent relapse. This is accomplished through individualized treatment that addresses a full spectrum of physical, social, and emotional needs.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
