About Sherman Counseling of Wisconsin – Oshkosh

Sherman Counseling is one of Wisconsin’s leading behavioral health providers specializing in evidence-based counseling, therapy and psychiatric care in a safe and supportive outpatient setting. Their clientele in Oshkosh, Wisconsin encompasses patients across all age groups ranging from children and teens to adults and seniors. They address substance use disorders here alongside common mental health conditions like depression, anxiety and trauma or PTSD.

They also tackle child and adolescent disorders, marriage issues and parent-child problems. Their therapeutic services are quite broad and also include family counseling, domestic violence treatment and specialized care for LGBTQ+ community members. These services are delivered by caring, compassionate and experienced interdisciplinary professionals grounded in evidence-based and personalized treatment.

Making Addiction and Mental Health Care Accessible

We particularly like that their programs include telehealth options. Telehealth eases transportation barriers to accessing care and enhances convenience by letting you receive care virtually.

Another core attraction is their commitment to low-cost care by accepting Medicaid and Medicare. This enhances access to a broader audience.

Sherman Counseling operates in four locations across Wisconsin including Oshkosh. This facility is located on Ohio Street near US Route 45 and a mile west of Lake Winnebago in downtown Oshkosh within Winnebago County.

Personalized and Evidence-Based Addiction Recovery

Outpatient addiction recovery at Sherman Counseling takes a tailored approach, grounded in clinically proven methods. Along with one on one counseling, therapy groups may address communication, stress and anger management, and parenting and co-parenting issues.

They may also tackle men’s and women’s issues and domestic violence. Trained therapists use traditional talk therapy techniques as well as relaxation and mindfulness training to support recovery.

They may also incorporate Biblical or faith-based practices in your tailored care. The program can involve psychiatric care as well like medication management to support individuals with dual diagnosis. Sherman Counseling is also capable of creating a specialized treatment program for you if you seek a higher level of care. It’s all about helping you achieve holistic healing and improving the quality of your life.

Went to seek help with communication with my spouse and was only able to attend the intro session where no details were given about our personal lives but more-so about sherman counseling itself which was fine. My wife attended the second and I was not able to due to work. She was asked to voice her concerns with whats going on in terms of communication issues and had talked about my political backround, who I supported in the past, and view points on government. The counselor without ever truly meeting me or hearing my side of things wanted us to get a divorce asap and that I was a crazed Trump loving conspiracy theorist... My wife was so distraught by the advice from the second session that she never returned. This happened well over a year ago and it still bothers her and I so much to this day that we decoded to finally leave a review in hopes that others will not attend here for simple communication advice.

I did a single intake session with Sherman Counseling. Their paperwork said my insurance would be charged $480, and they actually charged $627. When I called Sherman about the discrepancy, they told me their rates changed and were unwilling to work with me for a lower bill. I hadn't quite reached my deductible, so I was stuck paying a bill of $435 for the single session. Shame on me for my deductible oversight, but having patients sign inaccurate financial paperwork and then telling them "too bad; our rates went up" is not a good look for Sherman Counseling.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

When conducting motivational interviewing in Wisconsin, therapists engage with their clients as equal partners. They don't provide unsolicited advice or confront clients. Instead, they ask questions and listen, with the goal of empowering clients to recognize any need for change and their ability to make those changes.

Looking to become established with a counselor. Called the Oshkosh office. Got a recording with the hours they are open then click. No voicemail. Considering what kind of cliental they are working with, one would expect a person to answer... Called the number that was listed for inquiries. Someone answered. Asked why no one answered at the Oshkosh location. She said, "there was no receptionist at that location." I asked why no voicemail option. She said, "that is interesting." Very much NOT the place to go.

I have been with my therapist for many years, and she's helped me through plenty of rough spots in my life. I'm absolutely grateful to have such a caring person to help me with my struggles and listen when no one else can.

Horrible customer service. It’s nearly impossible to get ahold of someone. No one returns calls after leaving voice mails for weeks. Therapist was very rude and not very helpful. Don’t waste your time or money here.

This counseling experience has helped us to identify and understand the baggage we carried into our marriage. It has helped us to remove it from our relationship and recognize the love we really had for each other. We never hesitate to refer people Sherman Counseling.
