About Three Rivers Midlands – Residential Services

Three Rivers Midlands – Residential Services is a mental and behavioral health facility located in West Columbia, South Carolina. The organization provides residential care and partial hospitalization services, including drug rehab, for youth ages 6 to 21 who are struggling with psychiatric illnesses, substance use, or both. The TRICARE certified residential programs are open to youth ages 11 and up. Two of these programs are gender specific and the other two are coed.

Kids and adolescents involved in residential treatment receive 24/7 supervision and care in this 64-bed facility. Rather than solely focusing on participants’ behavioral issues, staff seek to help clients achieve overall well being so they can lead happy, healthy and community oriented lives. Participants may stay in residential treatment anywhere from two weeks to six months, depending on their needs.

KARS (Kids Achieving Resilience and Success Program) is a short-term, co-ed program for participants struggling with significant behavioral, cognitive, emotional, familial or social functioning. Staff use the Kimochis program to equip kids with the tools they need to cope with emotions in a healthier manner.

KEYS (Knowledge and Excellence for Youth Success) is another short-term, co-ed program for youth 11 and up. It’s not appropriate for participants whose primary diagnosis is substance use, but it is suitable for those with a secondary diagnosis of addiction.

New Horizons is the female-only residential treatment program for girls 11 and up with severe problems, such as substance use, that may endanger themselves or others. In addition to therapy, participants receive basic life skills training to help them live independently after treatment. The Synergy program is just like New Horizons, but for males only.

Kids at the facility also all have access to therapeutic activities, including outings, bowling, movies and events like talent shows and Friendsgiving. Additionally, they take part in online classes from Acellus Academy, a reputable and accredited institution, to ensure they don’t fall behind in their studies.

My daughter was sent to three rivers to learn coping mechanisms for PTSD due to being a s/a victim, this place was no help at all. When I went to visit her this place was very nasty! The floor was very sticky, by my daughter's 2nd day due to it, it was so bad she asked a staff member for a stack of cleansing wipes. The staff allowed her to use them and gave her gloves, she got on her hands and knees attempting to clean. By time she got near done with the back corner and under the table a janitor did come in, but she only dust mopped the place (no water, no cleansing spray). My daughter also cried her first 2 nights there, she went to the front desk (nurse station as it was called) crying wanting someone to talk to. They spoke to her for a moment then allowed her to just stand there, almost like she wasn't even there. My daughter went back to her room crying, they come check on the kids every 15 minutes, my daughter crying in her room was ignored. She says they did a whole 3 rounds before she was able to stop crying and the nurse/tech acted as if they didn't even notice, that is around 45 minutes of my daughter crying being ignored! The staff were also very argumentative with patients. for example a staff named Laura (Ms.L) was arguing with a girl due to her being rude and having a bad attitude, that night got so out of hand that a girl had a panic attack also leading others to get into out of hand arguments, 3 girls were sedated that night and the girl it all started with was moved to the flex unit (when being sedated you are given a shot in the arm or butt) it would apparently make the patient high and they would be asleep in the next 20 minutes or so, my daughter also says that they seemed to be really thirsty before falling asleep. My daughter also has G.l. issues and has to take medication pretty much as soon as she wakes up or she will be very nauseous and sometimes will throw up, it took till the day before she left for them to get her medication in order (she was there for 6 days when my husband and I were told 72 hours with the option to sign her out, they lied) There were also these group "therapy" things where kids had to read along papers with the techs and times having to answer questions, my daughter told me one of the options for coping mechanisms was protected sex!? This was very shocking due to some of the kids being there as s/a victims who recommends that with as young as 11 year olds in the unit. There was also this very sweet autistic girl who was so very mistreated. They would allow her to go a whole week without showering. She was also promised on a Tuesday she would be leaving the next day, she didn't. She was told on Wednesday "tomorrow" then Thursday "tomorrow". she left early that Friday. That Thursday she began to get very frustrated and started walking around yelling "I wanna go home" and was hitting walls, instead of attempting to calm her down they let it carry on, when it got to a point they sedated her in front of everyone. The social worker for my daughter and her friend had never even spoken to them, she told me she had spoken to my daughter but when I asked my daughter she said that she never did get to talk to her... they were both assigned a new case worker. My daughter came home with a fever of 102.5. I took her to urgent care and she tested positive for the flu. Dr. Malone told my daughter she wasn't sick and did nothing for her. The staff knew a child had the flu and didn't quarantine the poor child to prevent others from getting sick too, and considering the nature of this place I highly doubt they took proper care of her. My daughter says the 2 very nice techs Ruth and Mama Sha as she was called were very kind and helpful to the kids, the rest were very rude and argumentative. My daughter s clothes were also stolen the day of her discharge. She didn't get her piercings back but did get her necklaces back. I believe that they gave the necklace's back because they were fake, but her piercings were not. This place needs to be investigated and shutdown immediately.

Accepted Insurance

Three Rivers Midlands – Residential Services works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My therapist always looked like he just wanted to hurry up and go to lunch, he was not really interested in listening to my issues. I felt it was a waste of money and time, I did not progress at all.

If their priority were honestly patients, things would be so different. Staff loved to eat fast food and talked about inappropriate things in front of the residents (no confidentiality). No one bothers to help you, you are only punished for your addictions

Would not recommend. I am a parent of the patient and a nurse for 35 years and it was a useless experience. He got no help and ended up worse shape and readmitted within a week of them saying he was ok for discharge. They did nothing and the communication was terrible. It was a waste of time and money. Choose another place.

This place is horrible, I was there for 2 months and in that 2 months I got beat up, got my underwear and other items stolen multiple times, most of the staff don’t are rude, dismissive, and disrespectful. The rooms and bathrooms are filthy. The “psychiatrist” dopes you up on medicine, you never see her, when you do it’s for 5 minutes. Glorified baby sitting.

TRAUMATIZING to patient and family!!! My daughter was on the adolescent unit for 6 days. She came home with so much more trauma and anxiety than before. She and all the patients there were treated like less than human. It was so dirty! All of her socks were COVERED in dust and dirt and her clothes smelled terrible. She asked for her bathroom to be cleaned as there were feces on the toilet seat from a previous patient. No one would clean it. She had to ask for a wet wipe to clean it herself. Fights would break out and the staff would be very slow to respond. A girl was raped by another girl! She said the treatment of the autistic children was one of the worst things she witnessed. She said the almost all the staff were mean and cold and that only one staff member in her 6 days there acted as if she cared. She was promised one on one counseling which she never received. She was so cold all the time. They were only given 1 thin blanket. She wore 2-3 layers of clothing the whole time and came back with a cough. She is pale and looks sick. She has slept in my bed every night since she has been home. I was given no information when she was admitted and had to beg for every bit of communication I received. Each time I would call to check on my daughter they would give very vague generic answers mostly about policy. The kids are only allowed to call out once a day for about 15 minutes. Every day I would hear the horrors of what my daughter was witnessing. She was terrified for her safety every moment. She was involuntarily committed for her depression. I begged for her not to be sent there because I ale knew this was not the environment she needed to be in. I had no idea how incredibly horrifying it was! Do not send anyone you care for and love here. The torment it put our family through will take years to heal from.

This is a modern day teenage daycare there is absolutely no treatment being done and if there was there wouldn’t be so many kids returning! The staff is horrible starting with the NEW CEO down the command chain very sneaky, no communication, and very inconsiderate of the LITTLE staff they do have! Kids have suffered injuries and weren’t treated in a timely manner, staff has suffered injuries and get fired! the resident to staff ratio might as well say 1:12 BURN THIS PLACE DOWN ASAP!!!!
