About Valeo Recovery Center – VRC

Located in Topeka, Kansas is the Valeo Recovery Center. This recovery program operates under the Valeo Behavioral Health Care department.

Supporting men and women who are experiencing struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, the Valeo Recovery Center offers access to quality care in the least restrictive environment. There are also programs in place here for criminally involved individuals.

Services are offered through their intensive outpatient program and their inpatient residential treatment program.

Comprehensive Care

The Valeo Recovery Center is a supportive place to turn if you are struggling with a drug, alcohol, or substance abuse disorder. Treatment starts after you go through initial assessments that determine what the best level of care might be for you.

Social Detox

The Valeo Recovery Center offers social detox, this is an approach where medication is not used to help you wean your body off of its chemical dependency. It’s best for individuals who have a mild to moderate substance abuse disorder.

In place of medicine, comprehensive counseling, therapy, and round the clock supervision is used to help keep you focused on your detox goals.

Accessible Care

The Valeo Recovery Center is a Community Mental Health Center and they provide services to anyone who lives in the state of Kansas. You don’t have to be confined to Topeka only to receive care here.

Additionally, the care team here is equipped to handle struggles you’re facing with a co-occurring mental health disorder as well. This allows you to get to the root cause of the struggles contributing to your substance abuse disorder.

Jail Treatment Program

The Valeo Recovery Center has services in place for individuals in the criminal justice system as well. Their jail treatment program can help you work through addiction or substance abuse struggles while you serve your time. This allows you to build the skills you need so that you can transition back into society with a reduced risk of relapse and clear sobriety goals.

My experience with them has been rough. When a loved one had to go for mental health things, they had them sign papers at the beginning, where I was listed as an ok contact person. Then Valeo transferred them to a house and apparently didn't send the basic paperwork. I had to deal with 3 phone calls where I was treated like trash by staff (operators were actually kind, it was the people taking care of my loved one that did this).I was just trying to request how they were doing/how this process works without interrupting my loved one's treatment. That gave me an inkling to what is going on. It was amazing how many failures this facility that claims to help people has.Pay your staff better, knock out the bad apples, and do better. People need help and this place cannot do it.

I used valeo for basic therapy, it was ok but nothing I needed. I needed someone to challenge me. My therapist would just say what do you think you should do I need help, I know what I need to do, once again I needed help. Well then one night I was drunk and got in a fight (physical) with my then husband, my kids called my mom and she came over, took me to valeo and my kids home with her. I had a bloody nose from being hit. I wanted to check myself in for inpatient rehab. I was ready to be done with alcohol addiction and thought this would be the best place. However, it was about midnight and they didn t seem to care, they loaded me in a car with a stranger and took me to the hospital because they didn t want to deal with me. They took me there because they thought my nose might have been broken. That was my last concern, I wanted help with my addiction, and I told them that, then I walked out of the hospital after 30 mins waiting for the doctor to see me. So here I am, drunk and trying to walk to my mom s house from the hospital still drunk I finally called her to come pick me up off the street around 2am. It was winter, and I felt the didn t want to deal with me so they just dropped me off somewhere else, so they didn t have to deal with me.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

The length, intensity, setting, and treatment methods vary for each drug rehab in Kansas. Plans of care can be tailored to meet each person's own unique situation and needs. With the right program, individuals can successfully achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I heard many people say that it is really common to get misdiagnosed in here. Scheduling your appointment is not the way how it works here, you have to call first thing 8 AM and wait so they can file yours for that day, but if you are not lucky enough then good luck next day ... Read More

I was notified by my peer support worker David and his supervisor after hours on a conference call. I was dealing with some very serious depression and they both made it a point to tell me I wasn't worth anything and will never have the support I was needing. Yes after office hours on conference call. Most importantly they shared my personal information without my consent to a third party. This isn't all they did. Zero HIPPA privacy and ZERO care for a person expecting any crisis management.

Once again Valeo ceases to amaze me. This time, I called to setup an appt and get refills cause I am out, like I've done for years now. This time Im told that I won't get meds until my appointment 2 days from now. I'll admit I should of called earlier for refills but this is a first of denying me my meds. Why is it so hard to give me refills? I was previously told that my provider only works M-W so I have to call on Fridays. And I have missed every darn Friday for like the last month cause I'm working. So after I setup the appt. I and am told to leave a message on the refill line and they MIGHT get to it. FYI, I called 2 hours before they close, not the last 10 mins. Now I wait to see if I'm gonna have to miss 2 days work cause my head won't be right without my effexor. "Dizzyness and brain zaps" Thanks for implementing new procedures that make no sense without telling anyone, Good job Valeo!!

Don’t even need to say anything! Edit: if your looking for counseling or a psych evaluation do not go here. You can look people in the eyes and tell them the truth and they will still not hear you. They will slander you and call you a liar and label you as things you aren't. The internet is honestly a better place to look for counseling and or tips on how to work on trauma and your life. I wish I could tell someone or put a lawsuit from my experience, but if you can't trust someone professionally who can you trust. CB

I needed a psych evaluation for a school overseas that I had been planning for two years. Spoiler alert: the “help” I received was anything but. The lady who evaluated me didn’t bother to communicate that she wasn’t approving me. Instead, she had me release the evaluation to my school, where I discovered—surprise, surprise—that she labeled me with “possible schizophrenic tendencies” and deemed my dream of studying abroad as “impulsive.” Let’s set the record straight: I definitely don’t have any “schizophrenic tendencies.” Apparently, my personal belief structure, which includes appreciating the magic in everyday life—like admiring a sunset or marveling at dew on grass—was too much for her to handle. But hey, the good news is that I made it to my school without Valeo’s “help,” and it’s been an amazing experience so far. No schizophrenic episodes yet—imagine that! What’s even better? She was more than happy to have me come back for a medication management evaluation—or whatever they’re called. Clearly, she wanted me on drugs instead of taking a moment to understand my perspective. Maybe Valeo should hire staff with actual empathy instead of those who lazily tick boxes. This whole experience was a total waste of time and a couple hundred bucks. Oh, and while I was waiting, I saw them turn away multiple people in crisis. So, if you’re looking for a place that genuinely cares, I’d recommend looking elsewhere.
