About Westborough Behavioral Healthcare Hospital

When it comes to mental health, the term “recovery” is sometimes misunderstood by those new to treatment. Unlike recovering from disease or injury, recovery from mental and behavioral health concerns is a lifelong process. That’s why many treatment facilities offer ongoing aftercare support to graduates.

But what Westborough Behavioral Healthcare Hospital does that I find very interesting is care coordination. They want to ensure you have the support you need to prepare for the ongoing post treatment journey. Staff will work with you before your discharge date to introduce you to supportive community resources and other recommended facilities, if necessary, to help you maintain your path of recovery.

Clean, and Safe Facility This place is very clean and well taken care of. You can really tell they prioritize safety and comfort for everyone there. There are always plenty of staff around, which helps things run smoothly and gives a sense of security. I also love that they have spaces for group activities, a gym area, and even outdoor spots where people can relax and get some fresh air. It feels like a place that truly cares about both mental and physical wellbeing.

WBH has been wonderful, we've been to others but this time around it has made a difference. Everyone is kind, professional and understanding. My daughter still wants to go to the group meetings on Thursday without difficulty. She also looked forward to going to the outpatient program as well and she can be quite picky and stubborn.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are designed for clients who are medically stable and not at an elevated risk of relapse, including those who have already completed inpatient care. Outpatient programs typically advance clients' established treatment plans, offering continuing addiction counseling and recovery education. Clients who enter outpatient care immediately following detox may also receive medical and mental health assessments and personalized treatment plans. Most outpatient rehabs provide multiple levels of care to align with clients' unique needs.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as day treatment, allows you to receive rehab-level care while living at home. PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours of treatment each week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment plans can vary depending on your needs but typically includes relapse prevention, medication management, and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

A person who has alcohol use disorder (alcoholism) builds up a physical tolerance to alcohol. If they try to stop drinking, they experience withdrawal symptoms. Treatment is available for this condition, through alcohol rehab in Massachusetts. Treatment options include AA, detox, counseling, medication, residential programs, and outpatient treatment. Social and family support systems are crucial during and after treatment of any kind.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

In Massachusetts, substance abuse treatment programs can help to address addiction and, if relevant, any co-occurring mental health conditions. Programs include outpatient, inpatient, dual-diagnosis, and partial hospitalization. You'll receive therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy, and sometimes complementary therapies like acupuncture and mindfulness-based therapy. By attending skills training and recovery groups you'll build a strong foundation for your recovery and strengthen your support network, increasing your chances of long-term recovery success.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image

Child Program

The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

During family therapy, the therapist works with every member of the family unit to understand the role they play in their loved one's addiction. By addressing these patterns, family members learn healthier ways to interact with each other and contribute to a more effective recovery journey for the family member who is addicted.

Recreational therapy helps you as you recover from drug and alcohol addiction in Massachusetts by giving you structured activities to improve your physical and mental health. By participating in sports, creative arts, or nature activities, you have a positive outlet for emotions and stress that may have otherwise triggered alcohol or drug use. This helps to foster a healthy sober lifestyle.

This place is an out of control prison. Patients are kept on high medication doses with no counseling from doctors. It is near to impossible to get information on your loved ones there. It needs to be investigated, and shut down.

Response from the owner
We are very sorry to read your comments and understand how concerning this must feel. Our medical and clinical teams ensure that every patient’s care plan, including medications, therapy, and follow-up, is guided by licensed professionals and reviewed regularly. We also recognize how important communication is for families, and we continue to work on strengthening this part of the patient and family experience. Your feedback is important, and we take it seriously as part of our ongoing commitment to provide safe, compassionate, and effective care.

While I appreciate the efforts of some of the staff, unfortunately, the messages of available assistance and communication from your website are not accurate. A previous email was not returned, voicemails of concern over my daughter's care was not returned. Additionally, my daughter's discharge was NOT coordinated with her ACCS team as I was assured it would be when talking to Hannah, a clinician, at the hospital. Transportation was not coordinated/provided to the pharmacy to pick up her medication and she has been without some of her medication since discharge. Why would you discharge a patient without a CLEAR plan for them to get their medication? Additionally, I was told that your team would coordinate with her ACCS team in follow-up care, informing them of appointments, partial hospitalization, etc. Days later since her discharge no one has reached out to her about this. At this point she is already in withdrawal from her bipolar meds that were not provided. While I appreciate all the work that was done to discharge a patient, that was still not full stable, in this way is not what your website talks about.

Response from the owner
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We are very sorry to hear that your experience did not meet expectations. While we are unable to discuss details of any individual’s care in a public forum, please know that our team is committed to safe, thorough, and coordinated treatment and discharge processes for all patients.

We also understand how important communication and follow-up are for families, and we are continually working to strengthen these areas while respecting each patient’s privacy.

Your feedback is appreciated and will help us continue improving the patient and family experience.

My son has special needs with behavioral issues and this place was recommended and after reading the reviews.. hell no! My son’s psychiatrist said she wouldn’t send a kid here! That speaks volumes! Beware of where you send your children!

Response from the owner
We're sorry to see a review from someone without direct experience with our hospital. We understand your concerns and respect that you're carefully researching options for your son.

Online comments can sometimes provide an incomplete picture. Many families with children who have similar behavioral needs have had positive outcomes with us, and we encourage you to reach out directly to discuss your specific situation or visit our facility.

Our priority is always providing safe, compassionate, quality care. We're happy to address any questions and help you make an informed decision based on firsthand information.

We wish you the best in finding the right support for your son.

My son came here for Behavioral Therapy, psychiatric evaluations, and medication changes. The lack of communication has been appalling, the “doctor” has no idea what he’s doing, and there have been zero evaluations or treatment plans made. They let my son watch TV all day and he’s just a drugged up zombie. And they only let you see your child for 30 minutes a day. He told me no one listens to him, and I’m pulling him out because I fear he’s being mistreated. But anytime I call, no one knows what’s going on. At one point, they didn’t even know who my son was. They keep everything tight lipped because they don’t want anyone to know what’s goes on. It’s scary and disturbing. No one should ever let their child be “treated” here. I called and talked to 3 people yesterday about discharging him today, and now that I’m here no one knows that he was being discharged. Your time will be wasted and your child will regress by being in here.

Response from the owner
We are truly sorry to hear about your experience and the concerns you’ve shared. At Westborough Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, the safety, care, and well-being of our patients is always our top priority. We understand that clear communication and family involvement are vital, and we regret if you felt that these expectations were not met.

If I could give 0 stars I would, please do not let your loved ones go into a place like this my brother is autistic and non verbal and the whole time he’s been in here we haven’t heard news of him actually getting better all the calls we’ve received is either a incident or if he’s being put on any new meds i arrived at the place to visit and the front desk lady was very rude and careless about anyone’s situation I highly don’t recommend that you or anyone go here this place needs to be shut down immediately .

Response from the owner
We sincerely appreciate you sharing your feedback. We understand how important communication and compassion are when a loved one is receiving care.
While we cannot discuss specific patient situations in this public forum due to privacy regulations, please know that our team is committed to providing respectful, compassionate care to every individual and to maintaining open communication with authorized family members whenever possible.
We are also continuously working to strengthen our services and interactions so that families feel supported throughout the process. Feedback like yours helps guide our ongoing efforts to improve the experience for patients and families in our community.
