I am writing this review as a past client at Chrysalis. In late June, I was dropped of in Montana by my father. I was struggling with self harm, eating disorders, substance use, trauma related issues, and violence. I had recently tried to take my life. I was in and out of institutions, and was having horrible outbursts and depressive episodes. I found out that I was going to chrysalis when my parents held me back from school one day, and the next day I was on a plane to Montana. I was at such a low point in my life that I felt I had nothing to loose in life so I agreed to leave home. There was a lot of drama between the two houses, and there were multiple occasions that girls would try to “Jump” each other, and they had found multiple shanks and broken glass in my room. A girl in my house was found chugging soy sauce in an attempt to die of dehydration, and then consumed glass and batteries. The staff knew and did close to nothing. I had to convince her to go to the hospital and get help. She came back a few days later and nobody did anything to help her after. I had a terrible relationship with Daniel (a therapist) and had begged to change therapists, and nobody took me seriously. Students stated that she had said the following: “(name) can live on safety”, “she is one of the few ppl I have no hope for”, and “ill be shocked if she dose not end up dead or in prison” I refused to attend Therepy (family and 1x1) for my entire stay, so I got no help with my mental health. I had ran away 3 different times, and they would find me on the side of the road, or with the cops. Me and others in the house would give each other piercings ( septum, nostril, tongue, ear, belly button, nipple, and lip ) and “stick and pokes” that would get horribly infected. The staff knew about these infections, and did the minimum to take care of it. They caught me tattooing myself multiple times, and I refused to give up my needles and ink.. At times, staff would see me piercing my lips, or giving me, or other girls tattoos, and cheer us on, or just watch in curiosity. All of the needles were shared between at LEAST 11 ppl, and never cleaned. The staff also was aware of this. When I was allowed to leave the house/school, me and other patients would pick up cigs of the side of the road, and light and smoke them with matches we found, or the stove. I constantly smelled like cigs and the staff would brush it off. On another occasion me and another girl found a beer, and chugged it in my bathroom. The staff found out and found the bottle and threw it away and sat me down and said if anyone found out, they could get fired. We never came clean to protect the staff. On all occasions that I got substances, they did not tell my parents when they found out to protect themself. Since they did not get me help, I continued to use, risking consuming something that had been laced. One of the times I was on safety, they moved me to sleep in the basement. For a few nights I had to have a staff sit near my door but outside my room. One night they assigned a MALE staff to sit out my room all night. He moved his chair in my room (with is not allowed) and the other staff saw he did this and said nothing. I have trauma with adult males and this was known by the staff. The conversation between me and the staff was far from appropriate, and many questions have been raised about what happened that night. There was a time that I was in my room for days at a time, and I would give myself 3rd degree burns on my arms, and cut myself with old glass I found. One Friday night I attempted to take my life yet again. I tried to hang myself in my bathroom and got knocked out, waking up later on the ground. It was obvious what had taken place from the rope burn on my neck, and the bursted veins in my face. I was asked about is and refused to talk about it, but staff very well knew what happened, and never told my parents, even after finding the rope hanging from my bathroom window. I have so much more ton say but it would go well past the word count.

I must speak out about this school for anyone looking to send your daughter here. We sent my daughter here for one year to finish her high school education. Obviously anyone considering this is going through a rough time and are trying to navigate extremely precarious waters; I’m sorry you are going through this. It’s really hard. I was struggling myself during that time. While the teachers and counselors mostly seemed to be well-meaning and in some ways they helped us get through a rough time, there is a big problem. This school permits/promotes the occult and LGBTQ. I get it…This is mainstream culture in America now and they don’t know better. If you are Christian, I encourage you to stay away from this school. Once upon a time this was a Christian school, now it is in darkness. They used to take the girls to church every Sunday. Not any more. The dark forces were palpable when I visited. My daughter was very abused by another student and was not cared for appropriately by the staff. Her cries for help were dismissed, and she ended up cutting herself while in their care because they did not listen to her and has a huge scar on her arm to show for it. I encourage the leaders of this school to repent and turn to Christ. He will forgive your errors and lead you. Just as He forgives me my errors and many sins. I KNOW you want to help these girls, but you need God’s help. Seek the one true Light in Christ not the false gods found in other ideologies. Jesus Christ is the way to healing and wholeness. Parents, seek God and ask Him to guide you and lead you in how to help your daughter. Please forgive me. I must speak the Truth. I don’t want any other girls to suffer as my daughter has.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Often serving as the first step in the addiction recovery process, medically supervised detox involves weaning your body off addictive substances while in the safety of a medically supervised environment. If you are dependent on substances like alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines, the associated withdrawal symptoms can not only be uncomfortable, they can be extremely dangerous. In medically supervised detox, a team of medical professionals can monitor your health, vital signs, and progression to ensure your maximum safety and comfort.

Treatments

Montana's dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs provide comprehensive care for individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. Outpatient, inpatient, and partial hospitalization levels of care are available. Therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and experiential therapy address both disorders simultaneously and promote overall health. The benefit of dual diagnosis is that both conditions are treated at the same time, drastically increasing the odds of successful long-term recovery.

It is important to address mental health in rehab because we know that some mental conditions like depression and anxiety can be the root causes of substance abuse. Many mental health disorder symptoms are extremely stressful and cause great anxiety, which often pushes people to use drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism. On the other hand, substance abuse directly increases a person's chances of developing a mental health condition.

Clinical Services

During cognitive behavioral therapy in Montana, patients learn to be their own therapists. They develop coping skills so they can change their thinking and behavior in day to day life. This helps them overcome mental and substance use disorders.

A number of therapeutic methods fall under the category of experiential therapy, including art therapy, wilderness therapy, music therapy, and animal care. These methods are designed to focus on hands on involvement with an experience, such as creative expression or interaction with others. The goal is to increase your awareness of how you internally represent the world.

Family therapy offers a platform for open and honest dialogue about the challenges that addiction has created within the family unit. Using guided sessions, your therapist helps family members develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues. By working together, families can help support their loved one's sobriety.

Trauma therapy helps you process traumatic events that you may have witnessed or experienced. This is the first step to healing from these events, integrating them into a more coherent narrative, and improving your resilience.

Accreditations

The Joint Commission, formerly known as JCAHO, is a nonprofit organization that accredits rehab organizations and programs. Founded in 1951, the Joint Commision's mission is to improve the quality of patient care and demonstrating the quality of patient care.

I really enjoyed my time at Chrysalis! The staff were amazing and I got a lot out of the program. I made memories of a lifetime and I highly recommend Chrysalis to anyone looking for a place to feel better and work on themself. I had an amazing therapist. Danielle was the best. The teachers were great! I loved the residential staff. I have almost no complaints. I will never forget my time there 🙂 Out of all the treatment centers I attended Chrysalis was by far the best.

I spent a year at chrysalis from June 2021-July 2022 and I can confidently say I was not given effective treatment. First of all, food is extremely restricted. Majority of food was locked away and we were giving fruit that was already old when we received it and by the second day it was already rotting. It didn’t matter how hungry we were, we were only allowed fruit or drink tea except for designated meal times. Also if you were still hungry after finishing your portion you were not allowed anything more. I personally believe for young girls struggling with eating disorders, further restricting food is not an effective way to help them. I often felt like my soul purpose at this place was to clean. As a teenager struggling with metal illness it is no secret that some everyday tasks are a major struggle. I often had a hard time completing my chores due to severe depression. Even if they were complete and they weren’t up to staffs standards It would be considered not doing it. If you didn’t complete a certain amount of chores you got privileges taken away which was the one movie a week that we were shown. This made me feel like I was being punished for struggling. If you were on what was called “safety” you were expected to follow a staff around everywhere and had practically 0 privacy. As a teenager privacy is vital for development. If you were to accidentally stray away from your staff they would get extremely angry and tell you how you need to follow them even though it is their duty to keep and eye on you. One time 2 girls got put on safety because one was sitting on the others bed talking. While I was here there was incidents of a staff doing sexual things towards underage girls. Some of these girls were my roomates. In the lawsuit filed against the school for failing to take action against this staff member, the director of the school claimed that we are all just liars (lawsuit is public please review before choosing this school) I cant forget to mention how tha past director was outwardly Racist and said innapropirate things to multiple students. Nobody like that should be anywhere in the vicinity of underage girls. This place tought me little to no real life skills to me or my parents. This place built up a lot of anger inside of me towards authority which was not an issue I struggled with before coming. Also asking for a doctor they won’t give you one. One of the most concerning thing about this place (if not the sexual assault) Is the lack of real medical care. I remember many of my friends being in severe pain and their pain being brushed off by the staff and nurses. I know people that had to receive surgery afterword because their serious issues weren’t attended immediately. Many people with injuries were also still forced to participate in adventure activities or they were threatened with bad grades. The outcomes may look good on the website but coming from person experience I felt like I had to lie about my real mental state on the surveys just so I could get out. By the end of my stay I felt like I had almost completely lost myself and I was desperate to go home. The one good thing I got from this place was the education from the amazing teachers that work in the academic school. But unfortunately I could go on and on about the bad things that I experienced. About a year later i finally received my accurate diagnosis and was given proper treatment and I am doing amazing now! If you are seeing this, trust me I have seen what it is like to be treated well in a treatment center. I was given food when I needed it, I was able to focus on my own self improvement instead of house chores, and I felt validated through all of my struggles. Please reconsider sending your kid here. Although I was never angry with my parents they still are dealing with the regret and shame from sending me here. Please reconsider 🩷

Words could never fully describe how amazing Therapist, Amy Durden, and the entire staff and programming at Chrysalis are. Our daughter was there for 9 months throughout 2025, and completed all stages of the program, graduating with the most beautiful Apenglow ceremony a few weeks ago. Throughout her time there, we had weekly family therapy with her therapist, Amy; she had individual and group therapies, and my husband and I had frequent parent therapy sessions with Stacey. Both Amy and Stacey were compassionate, and gave voice and recognition to every hurt, fear and worry. They helped our daughter and our entire family do the work needed to repair relationships and heal from past hurts. Our daughter was closed off, shut down and very angry and anxious when she arrived. When she arrived home last week, she was a completely different woman-joyful, confident, loving, funny, patient, and peaceful. While at Chrysalis she was able to catch up with her schoolwork, even advancing to the next grade level ahead of schedule. Sally, the academic director, saw her strengths and helped her become more confident in her schoolwork and set aside her perfectionist tendencies. The house staff were wonderful at helping her navigate difficult friendships and gave her reminders about setting boundaries and taking space to breathe before reacting. Our daughter's self confidence was completely transformed while there-she went from barely speaking to being a leader in student government, in charge of taking care of the chickens and a baker extraordinare who would make cinnamon rolls and angel food cake to cheer up and encourage the other girls. She was encouraged to take risks, learn new things, and loved the weekly adventure therapies, learned to ski, hike, rock climb, and camp out while viewing breathtaking scenery in Montana. House staff taught her how to crochet and she made our son a 3 ft crocheted dinosaur for him while there. Amy Durden quickly became an angel in our lives, giving us hope and supporting us in our family healing. Our daughter has had many therapists over the past 10 years since we adopted her, and no one has connected better to our daughter and helped her more. The coping and communication skills Amy Durden taught Esther are ones she will carry with her throughout her entire life. Nina, the admissions and administrative staff, was a kind, understanding and welcoming light when we first reached out to Chrysalis, and her patience and help navigating insurance was a blessing. We will forever thank God for Amy Durden and Chrysalis. If you are searching for a place where your daughter can find healing and hope, while your family is also supported, please consider Chrysalis.

Honestly I hated a lot about my time at Chrysalis, but I am a better, healthier, and happier person for it. Even now, the people I met there (teachers, students, staff, and especially my therapist) are some of the most understanding and supportive people I know. They took the time to understand why I was acting a certain way and to push me to become better. Also I learnt to snowboard at Chrysalis, something that still brings me a lot of joy. If you’re there now, best of luck, you’ll be glad for it later in life.
