My recent experience at this hospital was nothing short of amazing. The last time I was in a hospital (over 20 years ago in California), it was a completely different and not so great experience. But this place is on another level when it comes to patient care. From the moment I arrived via paramedics, I felt well taken care of. The staff placed me in the **"Green Zone"**, and one of the team members reassured me, *"You re in good hands here this is the VIP section!"* That confidence was spot-on.My nurses, **Alexa and Alex**, were absolutely incredible. They checked on me regularly, ensuring I was comfortable and that everything was going smoothly. Their attentiveness and kindness made a huge difference in my stay.Once I was moved to a room, the care continued to impress. All the nurses specially Jay were punctual, professional, and genuinely concerned about my well-being. It s rare to find a hospital where the staff consistently goes above and beyond, but this team does it effortlessly. If you ever need medical care, I **highly recommend** this hospital they truly put their patients first!

Accepted Insurance

Harborview Medical Center | Seattle Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Often, substance use disorder originates with negative thinking patterns. Cognitive behavioral therapy in Washington is designed to help individuals change these patterns of thought, which leads to changes in behavior and freedom from addiction.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples therapy can help a couple navigate their differences. By learning powerful interpersonal skills in therapy, the couple can work together to overcome challenges and change the direction of their relationship.

One goal of family therapy is to provide a platform where members have a safe place to talk about the challenges that addiction has created in their lives. Using guided sessions, therapists help individual family members develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues between themselves to support their loved one's sobriety.

The advantage of nicotine replacement therapy in Washington is the absence of the many harmful chemicals that are present in cigarette smoke. These products supply the nicotine only, so you don't suffer from extreme withdrawal and can feel more comfortable as you quit smoking.

Had an unfortunate stay for ~7 weeks and visited many parts of this facility as well as encountered many staff members. ICU and TICU were both very professional departments that provided great care. PACU-B was where I first came out of intubation and was under the care of many wonderful nurses and technicians. The neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery teams both did excellent work on me to keep me alive. Radiology was always quick and they provided great care in keeping me comfortable while posturing for different images. Phlebotomy was mostly great; a few instances of digging for veins. A lot of travel nurses - some great, some not so great and borderline scary to be under care of. Housekeeping was okay. Sharing small rooms with other disabled patients kept expectations for immaculate cleanliness pretty low. Trauma nurses were all great and made me feel safe. Cafeteria is okay, but the staff members that delivered meals were always exceptionally kind and friendly. I felt a bit rushed out, but it was inevitable.

My experience has been horrible, had to follow up with every step of a referral process like I am dealing with incapable ppl, incorrect info, switched my primary care to UW to get an internal referral, worst decision ever. 15 hours later on the phone and I get told no not 2-3 days, more like 2-3 months…

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are sorry for any confusion related to the need for a referral. There are several reasons why referrals may be necessary prior to scheduling with a new provider, including insurance company requirements or to ensure that a patient is scheduled with the right specialist for a unique health condition. If you have questions or would like to speak to someone about your experience, please call or email our Patient Relations team at 206-744-5000 or comment@uw.edu. -HMC Patient Experience team

My husband was taken to Harborview after a cardiac arrest. He received the best possible care and everyone who interacted with us was knowledgeable, took the time to explain things, and made this the most pleasant situation possible under the circumstances. The ICU nursing team is world class and he is making a full recovery. Thank you!

Edited: Our family is incredibly grateful for the care our son received at Harborview’s Pediatric Burn ICU. The medical team—including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists—went above and beyond to save his life and support our family during an extremely difficult time. So many staff members treated our son with genuine compassion, respect, and love. A few even prayed for him, which meant the world to us. He felt safe, loved, and supported throughout his recovery, and we’ll never forget the bonds he built with his favorite caregivers. That said, there were a few areas where we believe improvements could be made. One major challenge was not being able to stay overnight with our child in the ICU. As parents, being close during such a critical time is essential, and it was heartbreaking to have to leave him at night. We hope Harborview can consider options for overnight accommodations or nearby rest areas for families in the future. We also had some concerns with infection control practices (like a nurse applying sanitizer over gloves) and an interaction with a nurse who was rough while caring for our son and removed protective padding that led to a minor injury. Unfortunately, when we voiced our concerns, we were met with resistance from the charge nurse, whose communication style felt aggressive and inappropriate at times—even in front of our young child. We truly believe that with some communication training, this nurse (who has valuable experience as a burn survivor herself) could become a much stronger asset to the team. Finally, Harborview didn’t have some of the specialized pediatric burn equipment our son needed, so he was later transferred to Seattle Children’s Hospital. We’re still incredibly thankful to Harborview for stabilizing him and giving him the chance to recover. I wish Harborview had the right equipment so that they could have continued to care for him. I love this hospital preferably over Seattle Children's hospital. Both Hospitals are great. but we prefer Harborview Hospital. Overall, our experience was overwhelmingly positive. We are beyond thankful for the hardworking, compassionate professionals who cared for our son and helped him through his recovery. The good far outweighed the negative, and we’ll always be grateful for the incredible support we received. We are happy/grateful our son is alive thank you Harborview

My friend was sent here because he had metal stuck in his eye. The doctors were wonderful and worked quickly to save him, but holy hell, some of those nurses have a god complex. I watched a nurse yell at him for refusing a vaccine, which he already had, and she told him he could die if he didn't get it. He is still alive and didn't get it. She criticized his intelligence and said she needed to make sure he was smart enough to refuse a vaccine. That was beyond abusive toward someone who was not there for vaccinations. I wanted to write this to thank the staff for saving his eye but also to remind you that you can be an expert in one thing and still a complete idiot in another. You don't know everything. But thank you for what you do a great job at, which is providing medical care to people in need. The extra power tripping / ego tripping over patients could be set aside and I think everyone would be better off for it. Cheers! 🥂
