About Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center

At Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center in Hazard, Kentucky, you can get both addiction and mental health services for you and your family. Clinics that offer both of these options also offer treatment for co-occurring conditions, which is common in many cases with addiction. I gathered a breakdown of many of their services, be they addiction or mental health, so let’s take a look at some of them here.

The ARH Recovery Clinic is essentially a transitional outpatient addiction clinic that can give you medication-assisted treatment if you’re trying to overcome any opioid addiction or alcohol addiction. I like that it offers you something of a bridge to the next stage of treatment.

As for their mental health services, they offer their Hazard ARH Psychiatric Center, which is just adjacent to the main medical center. Here, you can get help if you have any acute mental health issue, and they actually offer inpatient treatment at this unit.

Behavioral Health Care Access

If you need comprehensive behavioral health care, you can get that here too. They help with things like anxiety, depression, PTSD, personality disorders, and schizophrenia. They even have emergency mental health services if you have a mental health crisis and need to walk in immediately to get a service.

Some additional support services I noticed included their assertive community treatment, case management, legal advocacy, and suicide prevention services to make sure you’re taken care of in every aspect. Case management specifically is important because they can help you with your entire case from the beginning to the end, including helping you find work or the right resources once you leave their clinic.

I do not even give the 1 star.. only had to do that in order to leave this review. Went in for my heart condition coupled with chest pain that has been ongoing for weeks. Explained everything and of course every test was ran under the sun so they could bank from my insurance and drew my blood twice even though I had an IV in one arm they could have got the blood from. My blood pressure was 176 over whatever the bottom number was and was not once offered anything to bring it down. Left feeling sicker than ever. Do not recommend and will not return. Will be lucky to receive payment from my insurance company.

On 3/15/25, Sam Noble went to the Emergency Department. He was admitted but never taken to a room. He was released today at 2:00 pm. Sam is 78 years old and a Vet. He was just diagnosed with lung cancer. He was treated rudely and he had to ask for his meals and something to drink. Terrible

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. Aftercare referral could include: long-term detox, inpatient or outpatient rehab.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Kentucky often starts with detox, then includes inpatient or outpatient treatment, and continues with aftercare support. Specific methods used during each of these phases varies, but often include individual and group counseling, medication, and recreational therapies.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Biggest waste of time. I went there for an MRI, got it done and they said they would send it over to my doctor. Guess what...? They didn't! Their systems went "down". Now I have to request another one but I'm a disabled veteran and it took 6 months to get this one. Hazard hospital is the biggest joke I've ever heard of. Drive to Lexington or London... Your life will depend on it.

I seriously don’t know how this place hasn’t been shut down! My dad went in got hurt badly so it called for surgery; no nurses done their vital checks, no one checked on my father to see if he needed water or to use the restroom, pain management was a joke so my fathers blood pressure would spike which is dangerous for someone in their 60’s. If it wasn’t for my mother staying with my dad and doing what nurses needed to do he would have just suffered! Please just make a trip to London or Pikeville if possible!!

Recently had a family member in there. She stayed in the ER a couple of days because no bed was available. They took top notch care of her and the family member that stayed with her. Once on the floor is when things went south. Nurse Matt left tourniquet on the patients arm after trying to start an IV. Patient was very sick and in pain. Only was an hour and a half later did another nurse found it. Other nurses and aides were not kind. Gentlemen came in to investigate about Nurse Matt’s actions with tourniquet. Pics were taking of arm. Lawyer has been contacted! Nurse Matt was still on floor.

I was brought here in very bad shape. The staff made me sit in a chair for nearly four hours alone in a room. I eventually got "lucky" when someone brought me a gurney so I could lie down. They did nothing to help me in the ER. I realized this because, while I was going in and out of consciousness, I could hear the two nurses expressing frustration about them not doing anything for me and how bad I was. This place was hell, except for two nurses who saved my life. I hope they are working somewhere that appreciates how amazing they are. Thank you so much to them! The doctor's dismissive attitude and lack of time for someone like me was despicable. I wouldn't wish this place on anyone. I will never forget how poorly I was treated here. I would rather die than return to this place.
