Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY from harborview/UW!! Unfortunately, my doctor recommended them for a wound wash on my skull after a craniotomy and they completely butchered my head!! I will never go back. What do you need before/after brain surgery? REST. did I get any? Absolutely not. I have MRSA and c diff(I’m supposed to be isolated from other patients and I told all the nurses-no isolation. So, sorry patients, if you received my infections, (I tried). I was roomed with 80+ year old dementia patients, that yelled and set off bed alarms all day and night. I was in pain and sleep deprived. Then I was roomed with 20+ patients in one room. Curtains separating us, lights on all night. The nursing staff put me in unsafe situations to use a toilet. They were rude and inexperienced. hospital staff wouldn’t take the drain out of my head (it was ready and causing too much pain) so my husband had to! I woke up from surgery and my head was covered in blood, no clean up whatsoever. They informed me they would cut.05 inches of hair on each side of the incision, they did not! They buzzed off over 5 inches. Goodbye 8 months of hair growth for no reason. When confronted, they said it WAS .05 inches! I have a TBI, left side paralyzed, I was denied PT and OT! when I’m normally in IPR (in patient rehab AND out patient rehab. I could go on and on! Let the pictures do the talking. I went back to my surgeon at st. Joes with Virginia mason and the work and care there was IMMACULATE compared to UW/ harborview. Do your research and save yourself from a traumatic hospital stay with the worst surgeons/doctors/nurses and infections, since they have no care in the world to isolate the infected.

Accepted Insurance

Harborview Medical Center | Seattle Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Often, substance use disorder originates with negative thinking patterns. Cognitive behavioral therapy in Washington is designed to help individuals change these patterns of thought, which leads to changes in behavior and freedom from addiction.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples therapy can help a couple navigate their differences. By learning powerful interpersonal skills in therapy, the couple can work together to overcome challenges and change the direction of their relationship.

One goal of family therapy is to provide a platform where members have a safe place to talk about the challenges that addiction has created in their lives. Using guided sessions, therapists help individual family members develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues between themselves to support their loved one's sobriety.

The advantage of nicotine replacement therapy in Washington is the absence of the many harmful chemicals that are present in cigarette smoke. These products supply the nicotine only, so you don't suffer from extreme withdrawal and can feel more comfortable as you quit smoking.

I am forced to go to UW because I have an extremely rare disease. If I didn’t need to go here, I would not. I have been sick for 12 years, and the first 8 I received wonderful care at UC Irvine. But in 2020 I was forced to move to Washington when my caregiver wanted to move here. While the Drs and nurses are great, the small shared rooms are a complete nightmare. Around 80% of the time I get terrible roommates who scream and yell at the staff. And during the 20% of times I get a considerate roommates, there are many moments where I am having to still deal with things, like them going to the bathroom in bed and stinking up the entire room. I have been sick for over 12 years and been to many hospitals, but the shared rooms make Harborview the worst when it comes to the quality of my stays. I would never recommend it. If I didn’t have to go to it, I wouldn’t. I tried to included a video of my roommate screaming at the staff. Nobody's face or identify is exposed in it. There were two open rooms on the floor which were being saved for “isolation patients”, but doesn’t this woman’s awful behavior warrant her being isolated? Even if she wasn’t contagious, NOBODY should have a roommate like that.

Response from the owner
Thank you for taking time to let us know about your experience and the troubles you have had when in a shared room. Please contact Patient Relations at 206-744-5000 or comment@uw.edu if you would like to discuss further. -HMC Patient Experience team

Had compound fracture in my hand and it took them 4 days to do the surgery. Then the day of the surgery they told me I needed to get my finger amputated. Then I said no and another dr came in and laughed and said, “why would they tell you you should amputate your finger? There is definitely no need for that.” I had two witnesses present during both conversations. They also kept me from eating until 8pm each day in hopes of surgery then told me the surgery was pushed back last minute. Overall the hospital is extremely disorganized and managed by kids that are fresh out of college with minor over site from senior representatives.

Response from the owner
We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not met. If you would like to discuss your experience further, please call or email Patient Relations at 206-744-5000 or comment@uw.edu. -HMC Patient Experience team

I was admitted to Harborview for spinal surgery. Following the first surgery, I was placed in the burn unit. Throughout the day and night, patients were constantly screaming in pain. After my second surgery, I was immobile and unable to care for myself. This occurred at the beginning of COVID, so my husband was unable to stay with me or even visit. During my time there, I was dropped by the pt staff, severely over medicated, emotionally and verbally abused by staff, and left in my own urine/feces for hours. When I voiced what happened to the floor nurse and the care team, my pain meds were held in retaliation by the nursing staff. During my last week there, I was sexually assaulted by a male nurse. Once I left the hospital, I shared my story on my survey, wrote a letter and told my surgeon what happened. His response, “ I’m not surprised..” Stay away from this hospital.

Response from the owner

If you are willing, please reach out to our Patients Relations team at 206-744-5000 at your earliest convenience to provide additional information needed for our investigation.” -HMC Patient Experience team

Nurse “GiGi” in 606 bed 2 was The sweetest woman I’ve ever met in my entire life. I came in with a serious injury that was self-inflicted and she was the closest thing to Christ I’ve ever seen. The most loving, sincere, sweet and professional nurse I’ve ever had. When I think about how I would like the world to be, she embodies everything that God is I am so grateful and thankful for her and her listening ear. I have nothing but great things to say not only about her, but about Harborview in general. I’ve never felt loved like that before. After everything I’ve been through she really gave me hope and a desire to show loved other people the way she showed love to me. Thank you GiGi. I will never forget you in your kindness. I love you. Best, Jacob
