About Macomb Family Services

For more than 60 years, Macomb Family Services has been supporting residents throughout Clinton Township, Michigan, providing affordable and accessible behavioral health care services to children, adults, and their families.

The Clinton Township Clinic offers care in an outpatient setting, and the therapists can also provide support outside of normal operating hours if you need more flexible treatment plans.
They accept most major insurance policies here, and they also have sliding scale discounts available too.

Substance Abuse Treatment

Their substance abuse treatment services are pretty comprehensive and include treatment and prevention support for both individuals in crisis and their family members. Their treatment program consists of individual, group, and family counseling sessions that help you build your recovery skills. They also have an adolescent outreach program that provides care through the local school system. This helps at-risk teens get connected to services they need without requiring them to come into the clinic.

Driver’s License Evaluations

If you’re navigating the legal system because of a drug or alcohol related charge, you’ll need to at some point undergo a driver’s license evaluation to determine if you’re ready to regain your license. These evaluations can happen here at the Clinton Township Clinic.

In addition to their driver’s license evaluation services, they also offer substance abuse evaluations that might be court ordered or recommended by your attorney. Together, these services allow you to begin working through the legal struggles you’re facing as they relate to your substance abuse struggles.

Prevention Services

This organization’s commitment to the community is made clear by the way it integrates into the local school system. Children of all ages, from kindergarten to 12th grade, will have access to drug and alcohol prevention services that promote behaviors leading to positive mental health habits and minimize the risk of children experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

My therapist was wonderful, but there is something really wrong with MFS's business model. Before we began our last zoom session (which I really needed) my therapist informed me that my account was past due and I owed almost three hundred dollars. I was never billed and knew nothing about this! When I spoke to the manager later I was told it was the therapist's job to discuss billing. Really? I thought the Billing Department handled this. Then I found out the bill was 2 days old. Still have not received an actual invoice. INSTEAD OF GETTING THE THERAPY I WAS PAYING FOR WE SPENT THE TIME GOING OVER BILLS! So much for "do no harm". Finding another therapist.

Highly recommend. The counseling center is professional as well as understanding, caring. The business as a whole makes a conscious effort to support those in the community stepping in to offer support for a local Foster Closet event they went above and beyond to ensure the most at risk children in the community were able to enjoy a day to relax and enjoy. The Foster care community appreciates and is thankful for such an amazing and caring company to help lift children in their time of need.

My bonus daughter loves her therapist, who has been very accommodating and has really helped to reduce stress and anxiety in our teen. They really do a great job, we have used both the Richmond and Romeo locations.

Accepted Insurance

Macomb Family Services works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients engaged in a rehab aftercare program have already completed high-level treatment and have begun to develop essential recovery skills. Rehab aftercare services are designed to support clients' sustained sobriety as they reintegrate into their home, workplace, and community. Case managers, care teams, and clients design the customized service portfolio that will best support the client's long-term sobriety. Clients may receive peer coaching, 12 step program induction, vocational training, and relapse prevention services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy sessions in Michigan allow you to share responsibility with your peers in a group setting. This fosters a collective commitment to achieve sobriety and learn coping skills that are essential to improving your relationships and reducing your stress levels.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Worst experience ever. They assigned me to a doctor that treated me like an idiot, I got treated very poorly, my medicine got switched, and I only got worse. Wouldn't recommend them.

The office people are very horrible to work with called them over and over and told them how to bill my insurance and could never get them to do. I had to actually go through the therapist to get them to tell them and finally they were like oh you’re approved.

I have went to this practice for 4 years and had a reasonably good experience with Dr Burnstein. He left in Dec 2022 and my psychiatrist was replaced with Dr Pirtle: who upon my first visit, drastically cut my medication down and prescribed me a bunch of new medication. At this point I was 6 months postpartum with twins (had lost about all my baby weight) and struggling with ppd and ppa. My wedding was in 9 months. What he prescribed me caused me to have heart attack like symptoms so we made a bunch of adjustments. The other meds made me gain 10 lbs in a week and eventually added up to almost 30 lbs. He bad mouthed my previous psych and refused to keep me on my previous meds that worked. I felt like a guinea pig. I expressed my concern for gaining all this weight before my wedding and he basically told me that if I wanted to be a good mom to my children I’d stay on them for my mental sake. Bc of this I was prescribed weight loss pills by my pcp that made my anxiety worse. We made a plan to wean me off the little bit of medication that I was still taking by Dr Burnstein. One day randomly he told me he would no longer prescribe them to me, going against this plan being that I wasn’t supposed to be completely weaned off for another 6 months. After addressing the situation with my therapist Crystal she told the office manager and they were in shock at how quickly and dangerously he shortened the medication that I was taking for years. I was switched to other psychiatrist in the office, Dr Pirtles wife. She was alright. Another thing, my therapist would have me reach out to her personal phone via text to schedule sessions. The last year that we spoke I could tell she’d been multitasking and I didn’t feel like I was being truly listened to. Eventually she ghosted me and stopped returning my texts altogether. The only reason this place gets 2 stars is because they did help me out for a couple of years when I needed it.

Unprofessional and greedy. They will leave you in the cold without any preparation for termination of services. Staff here would rather speculate than use actual assessment and consider a biopsychosocial approach. I wasted 8 years at this agency.
