About Awakenings KC

Awakenings KC is a psychiatric practice in Prairie Village, Kansas, and is an affiliate of Midwest Psychiatric, Pennsylvania. They help with a wide range of mental health conditions including drug and alcohol addiction. This can make them a perfect option if you have dual diagnosis, especially if your mental health condition could benefit from medication.

Choose from Outpatient and IOP Treatment

This clinic is an outpatient treatment center so they don’t have residential treatment. What they offer instead is an intensive outpatient program (IOP). An IOP is a more rigorous program where you come to the office several days a week for a few hours at a time for treatment. This allows you to receive intensive treatment while still living at home. The IOP sessions are mostly group therapy.

Discover Which Medications Work for You

Awakenings KC takes a comprehensive and individualized approach to addiction recovery. They work toward healing your mind, body and soul in your personalized treatment plan. One service they have here that I found particularly interesting and unique is biochemical testing. Essentially this is testing to find out how different medications will interact with your body so you can find out which psychiatric medicines may be the best for you.

What Clients Are Saying About Awakenings

Clients have good feedback about this treatment center. They say that the doctors here listen with compassion and care and that the providers are excellent at what they do. Clients say that their treatment here makes a powerful difference in their recovery.

I saw Dr. Davila one time and will not see her again. She is very rude and did not even come out from behind her computer. As a patient, she made me feel like and employee sitting at the other side of her desk getting scolded.I was referred to her for the various non medication techniques she does for anxiety and depression and when she found out my insurance was limited she didn't even educate me on treatment options. She gave me a script for 5 pills and sent me out the door saying she didn't care to help me.Awful experience and terrible provider.

Took a good half a year for them to get with my insurance.Sarah said my Benzos I take would not interfere.Went in finally, tyrns out benzos do interfere and may not work. They said "Oh we have plenty of non-addictive pills we can substitute" OK, like my shrink hasn't been able to do this and I know of no medication that will do this.Anyway, they couldn't "map" my head well cuz I take klonopin, really a bad visit. To top it all off I had to call and cancel the whole thing becaus ethey had so much perfume and Fabreze etc... everywhere that I had an asthma attck and had to wash my clothes twice after getting home.I talked to Sarah and she said she would refund the copay and not nill the insurance - turned out they billed insurance and sent me a bill for the copay. When I called to straighten it out - btw they don't ever answer phones, can take days to get through - they said "Sarah is no longer employed here".They gave me the billing number which took weeks to get hrough to and for them to call me back.I explained it to their outsourced billing company and they took the lousy $15 copay I had off saying that they did bill my card and refunded it then billed me again. This place is NOT professional, the cap they mark with chalk on your head slips all over, they push the long term TMS contract like a time-share.They want you to pay up front for all the tratments, but I said no thanks. They don't know their stuff IMO and I went for OCD which is different than depressiona nd they said "oh we only zap you for depression".So they get you in the door by lying and then your stuck. At least my United Healthcare (yes them) were going to pay for it.The ended up getting $300 out of United after the first meeting went sour and I wasn't coming back - what a bunch of grifters.I won't even talk about what I read about TMS but one visit and I had a massive migraine for days. Please read up on this treatment as I am always leery about treatment that takesseveral weeks to start working". Like how in the world do they figure out if something like that works if you feel worse for weeks? SSRIs are the same though I suppose.Anyway, I feel they are out for one thing only - money. The billing company/dept. even said this location was having issues with staffing.Buyer beware - it's all about the money.

Accepted Insurance

Awakenings KC works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

The length, intensity, setting, and treatment methods vary for each drug rehab in Kansas. Plans of care can be tailored to meet each person's own unique situation and needs. With the right program, individuals can successfully achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Providers constantly going out of network. Providers care about money not about their patients. Poor communication. I have constantly been left without medications due to providers refusing to provide refills unless you would like to pay them $200 for a 10 second check up via zoom call Providers don’t care that they are causing dangerous medication withdrawals that could lead to serious harm… for mental health workers they don’t care about the mental health issues they themselves are causing. Providers go out of network with your insurance and don’t tell you… they just charge you $200 and force you to pay it. Save your time and find people who actually care about your well being!

My feelings are extremely hurt and i definitely feel far more unable to focus after my dealings with Dr. Stivato yesterday! Thanks to him i have been up now for over 36 hrs. My 87 year old mom is a witness to the whole thing! He abruptly stopped my adderall and put me on a class 4 medication because I wasn't taking my adderall as prescribed. I wasn't taking it enough! I did not realize if I made my 30 day script last 90 I still had to be seen every 90 instead of waiting until I completed my 3 rounds. I only take during work hrs. and when absolutely needed so he fired me today as a patient! I have done nothing but cry ever since my appt. at 10:40 yesterday morning!

Absolutely do not go to this place, I had a visit with Suzanne Swain who suggested to me a very powerful antidepressant that on day 3 sent me to the hospital with side effects. Despite multiple calls daily for over a week and a half I never received any calls or emails in response to my concerns or even checking on me. Disgusting customer service from people who don't seem to care.

I've been a patient for years without issue. New ownership: billing issues, Scheduling issues and I have now been without my medication for over 5 days. I cannot get a call back despite reaching out multiple times during regular business hours. I am beyond disappointed at the lack of responsiveness. Provider: Suzanne Swain
