*I had a friend who also went to pfh to get clean about 7 years ago and the change in this place (from 7 years ago to now) is nothing but amazing!
The staff are ALL caring, loving, people who want nothing but the best for everyone who steps foot inside this building!*
I would suggest before arriving for your stay that you call and verify what items you are able to bring and what items aren't accepted.
Ask about possible medications and scripts your doctor may have you on - they do give some medications and you are even allowed to have some items such as hygiene and OTC meds such as Tylenol.
I'd recommend having some cash or change as well, they have a vending machine you'll get access to.
You might also get to go on a day trip to Walmart, so if you'd like to spend some money at Walmart - you'll need to bring some!
🤍The last thing I can truly suggest is.... arrive with an open mind and an open heart to allow these loving people to help you become a better/healthier version of yourself.

PFH is a great place to go to if you want to get sober and start your life on the right path. They have a structured and routine environment. The staff are attentive to client needs while providing information to which I can use to maintain sobriety. I’ve never experienced a setting in which clients bond and trusted each other. I'm a chronic relapser and have been to Valley Hope several times. My relapses had nothing to do with Valley Hope and the care they provided. It just wasn't my time yet. I love Atchison Valley Hope. The staff are A+. They genuinely care about the patients while there and after their discharge. I get calls from my counselors and case workers periodically just to see how I'm doing. It's more than collecting an insurance check with them. I finally took their advice and went to php and iop, in addition to an addiction counselor. I'm 65 years old and sober for the first time in a very long time. There's no treatment center that's going to keep you sober or drug free. It takes work, but at AVH they will provide a serious reboot for your future.

Current Inpatient resident who would like to say I came with much trepidation and anxiety. All of which I was able to shed easily on account of the staff and friendly fellow residents. Not in any small part because of Kerry (think I spelled that right) in detox, because she is @$$@ ing hilarious, and made me feel a lot better. I mean, guys, it’s rehab.. ;) But this is a very good rehab. Admins listen.
EDIT: It took guys.. It really took this time. I shed the $&!t colored goggles. And the world is vivid.. bright.. and while i honestly believed I'd be dead by now... In reality I'm happier than I think I ever have been. I couldn't see it back then.

This place helped me rebuild from the ground up. They brought back structure, gave me space to mentor younger folks, and let me move my body again. Depression hit hard, but they knew how to support that too. Not perfect, but it gave me my purpose back.

Finding a place that saw all of me meant everything. The staff respected my pronouns, and therapy felt safe and real. Art groups helped me speak without words. The food was just ok, but the care? Deeply human. I wish there were more gender-inclusive spaces like this. It wasn’t perfect but it was healing, and that’s what I needed. I walked out stronger, finally feeling seen.

Words are so inadequate to express the level of gratitude that I have for Taylor and the staff at MRC. Prior to meeting Taylor, I felt terrified and helpless not knowing how to help my daughter. Taylor not only took the time to speak with me and explain the need for a recovery program for her, but he came to the hospital and spoke with her personally. Sharing his story with her and his words of encouragement helped to convince her that she needed a recovery program to overcome an alcohol dependency. Taylor and MRC quite literally saved my daughter's life. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Facility has mildew tiles on ceilings, black mold on shower curtains in all bathrooms along with loose water logged tiles in bathrooms. Kitchen is locked at random times throughout the day closing water source. Hundreds of bugs within facility flying around; mostly gnats, flies, and mosquitos easily visible. Two thirds of all cardio equipment is broken. Food is over made leaving too much portions in the leftover fridge which are thrown out consistently. Fresh fruit is left untouched with average 7-10 portions per resident due to insect issue. Groups are treated as a shut down time meaning full credit is given without discussion or meaning. Smoke break staff treats our designated times as an optional part of the day meaning they are in the office having conflict of interest conversation with often refusal of due diligence when reminded of such. Lack of showering in diseased bathrooms that need renovation are a disciplinary action excluding you from activities. Checkups are every 30 minutes whereas if you are in your room with the door closed there is no warning of staff and many fling the door open as to re-enact a drug bust.

I've been going here for years now. The reception staff is almost always very respectful, and if they are "off" its likely because they are busy.
The doctors take time to ask questions and understand. The Nurses (especially Mariam) are very kind and thoughtful.
I haven't really had any poor experiences here!

I have had a family member addicted to fentanyl for years. I have taken them to many places only to be sent away with a script of suboxone. This DID NOT WORK. it was only abused. Then I made the phone call that is saving my sons life and he wad on detox within 4 hours of that call. 5 days later he entered their 90 day program and is doing great. He is 7 days in that program today, my grandson and I were able to have a short visit with him and he looks a thousand times better.. he looks healthy and his mind is clear and there is hope. FINALLY. They didn't just write him a script and send him away like everyone else listed below Research

This amazing caring staff IS the difference at heartland. This is an underrated community resource in independence and Jackson county. It's not the abundance of resources, or judgements free environment of learning the art of new patterns and behaviors as tools to combat a variety of epidemics that affect every family. It is the HUMAN compassion, patience, counseling and tools for accountability. This place is a lifeline for those who have and have not other options or resources. Walk in and ask for help. It's that easy. First step.

I have worked with this organization and have several contacts enroll and receive services here. They are one of the best around if you are struggling with alcohol or substance use disorder. Very compassionate and genuinely want to help those that are wanting and needing to make positive changes in their lives. BECKY PELLEHAM IS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST. MAKE SURE YOU ASK TO MEET HER WHEN YOU ARE ON SITE. SHE IS EXTREMELY RESOURCEFUL, AND IF SHE SEES THAT YOU ARE TAKING YOUR RECOVERY SERIOUS AND TRYING TO BETTER YOUR LIFE THEN THE SKYS THE LIMIT AS FAR AS WHAT SHE CAN DO FOR YOU. I wouldn't mislead or try to benefit from someone seeking recovery as so many people and places do. This is the best place around especially if you dont have private health insurance.

After everything I been through, this place helped me rebuild who I am. The workouts brought my body back, but it was the talks, the brotherhood, that brought back my purpose. They really got into the mental side too. Only thing I’d change is more structured peer mentoring. But man, I left with hope I didn’t think I’d find again.

I’m not sure why everyone is so rude in the other reviews, as people seemed to have lost their dignity. However, I’ve had nothing but pleasant experiences here. My provider Dr. Brooks has been nothing short of amazing and the staff are beyond sweet and helpful. Perhaps you all should show some kindness and it would be reciprocated back. They always smile and treat me well when I have my appointments and I live over an hour way to come here! I love this office and all the staff I’ve encountered so far, truly a wonderful experience!

Felt safe for the first time in years. They really saw me as a person, not just my addiction. Loved the women-only groups. Helped me reconnect with my kids too. Food was okay but the healing mattered most.
