About Mount Sinai Medical Center

The Behavioral Health Department at Mount Sinai Medical Center provides behavioral health services for adults in Miami Beach, Florida. You can go here to find inpatient and outpatient treatment for a range of psychiatric and behavioral disorders, which may include addiction. They accept self pay, private insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare. There’s also a financial assistance program.

What I find most interesting about this facility is that they’ve gone to great lengths to make sure their units feel as homey as possible. Sometimes, staying at an inpatient center can feel cold and clinical. They didn’t want it to feel that way, so they recently renovated their 81 bed center to include sleek, modern finishes. They designed each space to be comforting and inviting, even adding deluxe features like en suite bathrooms. Something else I appreciate is that the clinical team can speak with clients in many different languages including Spanish and Russian.

Whether you need inpatient or outpatient care, your providers will customize your treatment plan to make sure you’re getting the right level of support. They offer many kinds of services including counseling sessions, occupational therapy, recreational activities, medication management, and educational programming.

People who have gone through treatment here say that the service is personalized and that the clinicians are some of the best in their fields. They mention their brand new facilities and how much they appreciate the clean and well maintained space.

Although the medical care was fine,* when I first went to the ER because I was experiencing the pain of a kidney stone and thought I was going to pass out from it, I was casually handed a clipboard and told to 'go sit over there, fill this out. and come back with your I.D. and insurance cards". It was incredulous. Kidney stone pain has been compared to the pain of childbirth. Imagine a woman coming to the ER in the middle of her labor with the fetus crowning, and being handed a clip board to fill out!* there seemed to be little coordination amongst the staff. I was told that if I had to urinate I should use a sieve so that if I passed the stone they could send it to the lab for analysis. I was being hydrated with an IV line and told the doctor that I really needed to urinate. I was told they would bring a sieve. After a while I had to find a nurse to get me a sieve because I now really needed to go and could no longer wait for them to hopefully show up with one. they seemed unaware that I needed one.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs encompass multiple levels of care to facilitate clients' progress through their recovery journey. Clients who are stepping down from inpatient treatment may require intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment, which involves more frequent and substantive therapeutic interventions than does standard outpatient care. Outpatient centers typically provide extensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family therapy. Medication assisted treatment programs (MAT) and recovery-focused life skills training are also common in outpatient care.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients typically choose inpatient rehab when they are in early recovery or are experiencing a crisis that puts them at an increased risk of relapse. They reside at the treatment center for the length of their program, which may range from two weeks to more than 18 months, depending on the program design. Intensive psychotherapy is often the primary treatment modality, but clients in inpatient care may also receive holistic treatment and recovery-focused life skills training.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) involve frequent and robust therapeutic sessions for clients requiring high-level care. Clients may engage in a combination of medication assisted treatment (MAT), addiction counseling, recovery skills training, and holistic therapies for a minimum of nine and a maximum of 20 hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery, those exiting detox or inpatient care, and those at an elevated relapse risk.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

I am very impressed with the way I was explained of my condition by Dr Williams and the way he explained the procedure he will be performing. He has excellent bedside manners and it is obvious that he loves his profession. I left his office with the assurance that I am going to be in good hands, and of course with Almighty God guiding him.

I had a smooth and pleasant experience during my recent visit to the ER. From the moment I arrived, everyone—from the reception staff to the medical team—was very accommodating and polite. I truly appreciated the kindness and professionalism of the doctor who attended to me. Special mention to Dr. Gregory Oliva (Resident DO) and Dr. Michael Dalley (DO). Their calm and caring approach made a stressful situation much more manageable. Thank you to the entire team for your excellent service and compassionate care!

MATERNITY/DELIVERY: Let me start by saying that I had my first child at a hospital in the Boston area where the birth of my daughter felt seamless and the doctors, nurses and staff were professional, competent, friendly, and caring. This helped my me compare giving birth to my second at Mount Sinai where my experience was unfortunately pretty horrible, perhaps even traumatic. First off, anesthesia went wrong and admitted to my husband that I was given “too much” causing my heart rate to drop to the point where I almost fainted several times. At delivery, the doctor was making faces as if she’s never assisted with a natural birth. Post delivery, I did not feel supported or properly cared for. Of course, we brought a handful of outfits for our baby, but after a few accidents and we’re running low, the nurses said the only other option would be for baby to wear a hospital provided shirt made out of paper. MOMS: PLEASE DO NOT DELIVER HERE.

Dr. Ayad, his team, all nurses and personnel in general were as good as it could get. I went to see Dr. Michael Ayad after another vascular surgeon had tried to install a stent, but he couldn't. He suggested a bypass surgery which is much more invasive. I brought all the information from the previous try, which Dr. Ayad studied, and he told me that he could put the stent using other techniques which he did. The procedure was successful, and I am so happy! I can't thank Dr. Ayad and his team enough for what they did for me. On the other hand, they were very kind and took all the time necessary to address my concerns. They are the best of the best.

My first visit there and I was pleasantly surprised after reading some prior reviews. My overall visit recently was excellent!! I had an office visit with Shannon Chinn and was treated with professionalism , tentative observation and compassion. She completed the visit and empathetically suggested I go to ER for immediate imaging. I was a little hesitant, but decided finally to go after remembering the concerning look on her face. Long story short, imaging was unremarkable, The whole ER and the hospital supporting staff was friendly and attentive. Nurse Gal in ER that day was also very professional and really did a lot to make my wait less painful. She really went the extra mile, making sure I was ok and not in too much pain. She explained the wait time in real time pending my time to see the doctor. She in supporting Dr. Kirpalan, explained my treatments, got me started, took care of the paperwork, wheeled me out in a wheelchair, till I was good to go! Overall, my visit to this hospital/campus was a little overwhelming for the first time due to the size and transporting from one end and side to another, but great for me otherwise! I greatly appreciated all, but especially the professionalism, compassion and commitment of ER nurse Gal and PA Shannon Chinn that provided me with excellent service and care.

It’s a nice hospital but confusing to navigate. The buildings are quite spread out without internal corridors. You often have to leave your building and walk on the street until you get to another building. The addresses given to me by doctors often lead me to going to the wrong building, so almost every time I’ve head to ask the information desk where to go. Parking is limited and expensive.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hi Morton Globus, <br>We appreciate your honest feedback, as we are always looking for ways to improve.

Nurses, technicians and doctors were very efficient, kind and funny which made my visit less stressful. Special praise to Gabriel who swooped in like a pro to draw blood after the other nurse was having trouble locating a good enough vein. Visit took about 6 hours though but I guess that’s normal? It was my first ER visit. Check in and overall experience was great and I would definitely recommend this center for your emergencies. Thank you! Visited: Thursday May 22nd

Labor and delivery was an absolute dream thanks to their nurses and doctors! Nurses were so persistent kind and attentive. Doctors were so knowledgeable and professional. I went in for my first c-section, they just made the process so easy, they talked me through the entire process explaining everything before performing. Please acknowledge the staff that worked morning of May 22,2025- Night of May 23, 2025. They were ALL amazing. Thank you to everyone. Love this hospital
