How Does Online Counseling Work?
Online counseling is similar to in person therapy. You meet up with a counselor and talk through your life challenges and recovery issues. Online or telephone sessions usually take place weekly or biweekly. You and your therapist agree on a set schedule and stick with it.
Virtual counseling grew extremely common during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth offered the opportunity for people to connect with qualified professionals from the safety and convenience of their own home.

What Issues are Not Appropriate for Online Counseling?
Even though it’s advantageous in many circumstances online counseling isn’t suitable for all situations.
It is not recommended for the following conditions:
- When a person needs inpatient treatment for psychosis or other serious psychiatric conditions online tools can help direct them to a facility but won’t address the need for hospitalization.
- Any indication that a person might hurt themself or someone else is difficult to address if they don’t want to give location information.
- If a person is overdosing, with someone who’s overdosing or is potentially going to overdose on substances in-person medical intervention is essential to saving a life.
- Eating disorders must be clinically treated through nutritional and therapeutic intervention. Aftercare follow up may occur through Telemed but stabilization through inpatient care is essential.
- Many personality disorders are necessary to treat in person due to the nature of dishonesty, delusional thinking and psychosis.
- Active and unmedicated schizophrenia, bipolar or other conditions that need medical stabilization for a person to respond to therapy.
Engagement & Tech Barriers
People sometimes get tired of meeting online and disengage before their programs are completed. When this happens it’s beneficial to have an in-person option to remain engaged.
It became obvious during the COVID 19 pandemic that not every rural community had the same access to WiFi to participate in telehealth services. Some people aren’t tele savvy and end up being discouraged from seeking care.
Most providers offer tech support to get people set up to use equipment and programs.

No two demographic groups are the same. Treatment usually differs when you consider age, gender, and occupation. Telehealth options often have different tracks that depend on the target population. Here are some common telehealth groups.

I don’t usually write public reviews about something as personal as substance use treatment, but the care I’ve received at Recovery Team – Cape Cod is worth breaking that rule.
I came here after a 20-day detox, thinking I had my substance use disorder under control and didn’t really need a PHP program. But I figured, “What the hell, I’ll give it a shot.” That decision turned out to be one of the best I’ve made in my recovery journey.
The group sessions are truly engaging, and the exposure to different tools and coping strategies has been invaluable. The recovery community here is one of the strongest in the nation. I initially committed to just two weeks—but ended up staying for the full four, and I’m even considering sober housing now.
The staff have shown me nothing but genuine care and commitment. I’ve never once felt like just another “client.” They’ve treated me like a real person—with hopes, struggles, and a future worth fighting for.
If you’re on the fence about starting a PHP or IOP program, I couldn’t recommend this program more. Sure, there might be flashier or more luxurious programs out there—but ask yourself: are you looking to be pampered, or are you ready to gain the tools you need to build the best life possible?

In 2020, I went to the Aloha house in West Palm, after treatment. I was a chronic relapser and out of hope. The structure and support at the house set my feet on a path of victory and recovery. I’m almost 5 years sober today, reunited with my husband and 3 children, and helping others out of addiction. I’m not sure where I would be if I had not found Aloha. My experience at Beachway was not perfect, as nothing truly is. However, I would not change a single thing. I learned so much and was embraced and understood for what feels like the first time in my life. Words can not express how thankful I am for the staff, the therapist, and the facility as a whole. I want to specifically thank Tripp, my primary therapist, and Brandon, my trauma therapist. Without these two gentleman I would not be living the life I am today. As I write this I have almost 7 months sober, moving into my own place, have a great job, and so many connections within the recovery community. I go to sleep often without worry, I breathe more calmly, and I am at peace almost daily. I love my life today, and that is in part thanks to Beachway! They will forever have a place in my heart. I had come and make a review. I was in distress and full of Anxiety (that I diagnosed myself with lol) trying to find my son an appointment in order for him to be discharged. I googled several places who did not accept his insurance. I felt defeated and said a prayer than I googled some more and found Provive Wellness. Not only was Tommy very knowledgeable, patient, and reached out to the social worker right away. My son was scheduled in no time. This is what I call superb customer service. Victory Bay seems to be a great spot for those in search of a place to start their recovery process. They have hooked me up with all types of resources to help me start my journey. Beachside Rehab has completely changed my life. I stayed in residential for 30 days, switched to PHP for 14 days and am now transitioning into IOP. If I could utilize this facility forever, I would probably never leave, but they gave me the help and confidence to fully trust myself and my environment to move on from Beachside.
Molly Graham is an amazing therapist who really helped me through my family issues and navigate my new diagnosis. She always made time for me even when it wasn’t a session day. She never made me feel less than for not know how to handle certain situations and she always found a way to greet me almost every single day.
Diana is the best trauma therapist I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Her technique and ability to really speak to your mind and soul is like nothing else. She really is a special human and therapist who individualize her therapy to fit each person.
The BHT’s are always an amazing comfort during your stay here and really take the time to get to know everyone individually.
I am extremely fortunate and happy with the coping skills and help I have received from Beachside. They will forever be apart of my story and I will recommend them to anyone who is in need of Mental health or substance abuse help.

Beachside is a wonderful environment that truly cares about your goals and needs. If you’re in need on inpatient therapy I would highly suggest this place. At first I really did not want to come but I met many lifelong friends and really discovered myself. The building is clean and well cared for. The staff is lovely, and will accommodate you best they can. The pool, gym, and other amenities are very nice and well kept. I highly recommend anyone who needs a little mental health help/ or a lot, to choose beachside.

I had no idea what was going to become of me when I was sent to Immersion’s PHP program from a different residential treatment center. I knew I was an alcoholic, but that’s pretty much it. It has been a month since I finished my program there, and looking back, I can say they saved my life. The entire staff legitimately cares. From the therapists, to the 12-step contacts, to the techs, they made me feel welcome and heard at all times. I have never been happier, healthier, and more determined to continue on this recovery journey. Immersion deserves a lot of credit for where I am in life.

Compassion is a really good facility. I can’t say enough good things about Compassion Behavioral Health. From the moment I arrived I felt supported, respected, and understood. The staff truly care not just about getting you through a program, but helping you build a real foundation for long-term recovery.
The therapists were knowledgeable and compassionate, and the group sessions were incredibly powerful. I especially appreciated the variety of therapy options CBT, EMDR, and even art therapy. It wasn’t a one-size-fits-all approach they tailored the program to my needs.
The facility itself is clean, safe, and peaceful. The outdoor areas and activities gave me a sense of normalcy and helped with healing. Also, having access to both mental health and substance use treatment in one place was a huge plus.
If you’re struggling and looking for a place where you’ll be treated with dignity while receiving top-notch care, I highly recommend Compassion Behavioral Health. They helped me turn my life around. Big shoutout to Cam my case manager she’s amazing

This second time they were just as wonderful. They got him a bed the first day he called them. When he arrived they all welcomed him again. And the 3 months that I was here, I learned a lot about myself. I dealt with trauma, wrote a good buy letter to each and every trauma I ever endured. I dealt with the passing of my father, while I was in the program. The love and support from the staff and the clients, help me to navigate this trying time. I was able to go to outings, alumni events; pool party volleyball speaker meeting. I was taking to a meeting a day. And best of all I was given all the tools that I need to be able to live my life clean and to handle any situation that comes my way without using! I have just graduated from this program today. And what I have to say is, I am so grateful for Provive wellness, they have been apart of the programs that have saved my life. The staff has been extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Extremely organized and apart of the journey with you. If it wasn’t for me talking to Tracy and getting information, idk that I would have choose the program. Coming out of residential treatment I was scared to start all over again. But she walked me through all of the steps and her kindness settled my fear. And on day one clients were so welcoming and Cameron, the group facilitar and therapist, was so warm and welcoming. The way he thinks and the way he puts perspective out there was so impactful. My therapist Elisha, was so gentle with me and lead groups as well. She was so insightful and I’m so grateful that I got her. This place was life changing for me. Those who are struggling with their mental health, should consider coming to a Provive. When you feel lost, you will be found. And I was found here at Provive.

Recovery Well It’s a amazing place to seek help for a loved one or someone that you know that needs help with addiction recovery. Brighter Start helped me in so many ways. I was fresh from prison, new to Wilmington, only a few months clean from being on drugs for 10 years. I was starting from nothing and scared to death. Never talked about the baggage I had been carrying for so long. All the pain and all the anger was why I stayed on drugs. Colten, Todd and Sarah are the absolute best at what they do! Being able to finally let go of all the weight that held me down was a blessing that I’ll always cherish. I worked hard and stayed focused determined to get my life back. Brighter Start has been a true blessing in my life. Everyone from start to finish has a genuine heart to see people be better. They actually take the time to care for people who are ill which can lead to the use of drugs, alcohol, etc.. So I’m glad I was able to learn about myself, and get healing for myself that way when those tough times come I know how to navigate through life in a healthy way. I’m better because of this place. I walked these halls 10 years ago. Tim Helmek (I forgot if that’s correct spelling) saved my life with what he taught me. I didn’t stay sober that then but when the time came I knew what to do to stay sober because of him. Just celebrated 7.5 years. I can’t say enough good things about this place.

My last stay at Hazelden Plymouth was about 2.5 years ago, when I was 17. At first, I was nervous and resentful of my parents for sending me there but I’m glad they did. The facility was amazing (and the food was great too). My psychologist, David Wells, was very educated and helped me make real progress. My counselors, Joanne and Denise, were exactly what I needed. I overdosed on fentanyl three times before coming here, and without Hazelden I truly don’t think I’d be alive today. I’m now 2.5 years sober, and the education and support I received at Hazelden continues to help me in other parts of my life. I’m very grateful for my time here and highly recommend Hazelden to anyone who needs help.

Rockland is like no other treatment center. They teach you about the model of addiction and break down the AA Big Book line by line.
