About South Shore Child Guidance Center – C.A.R.E. Center

Located in Freeport, New York, the South Shore Child Guidance Center – C.A.R.E. Center offers addiction treatment for adolescents and adults experiencing substance use disorder. Their program operates on an outpatient basis, making it possible for you to keep your regular life going while seeking treatment. If necessary, they can prescribe Vivitrol and Suboxone as part of a medication assisted treatment (MAT) program. These medications are carefully monitored and are used to help you detox and manage longer-term cravings and withdrawals.

Treatment involves extensive education on chemical dependency, which helps you understand the nature of addiction and the multiple effects that substance use has on your wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around you. You’ll receive individual and group therapy several times a week.

Individual counseling helps you get to the root causes of substance misuse. You’ll learn to identify unhealthy behavior patterns and practice new coping mechanisms that support sobriety. Group counseling provides a supportive and understanding environment to share your struggles and triumphs as you progress through treatment.

They also run a DWI Offenders program, which aims to educate those convicted of driving under the influence. You’ll learn about the dangers of driving while inebriated and the effects of substances on the body, and learn how to keep yourself and other drivers safe.

Something unique about the C.A.R.E. Center is the support they offer to the family members and loved ones affected by someone’s substance use disorder. They offer counseling for partners and children of those experiencing addiction.

Taylor Eckhaus is finally the therapist my teenage child needs. She is an advocate but she also makes my child self reflect which is not easy for an autistic teenager. She specializes in LGBtQ+ clientele. But she also advocates for my child s rights at school. I couldn t ask for a better therapist for my child. She totally sees and understands my child s issues. Taylor is the first therapist that my child feels comfortable with and trusts enough to open up to.

My son started here when he was diagnosed with mild ADHD when he was 6.5 yrs old and we've had nothing but a great experience with this center. My son currently see's Taylor and she's wonderful! We will continue for as long as my son needs the extra support.Update on my review. I ve decided to take away 2 stars for the fact that this facility is absolutely horrible at communicating to their staff when they plan to close for holidays. I m never notified until DAY OF that they plan to close early and we have weekly standing appts. I feel bad for the therapists that are put into this position to telling their clients they have to reschedule them. What an inconvenience!

Horrible clinicians, beautiful building. It s a shame. The therapist I encountered here seemed very miserable and often complained about her job. Took away from our sessions to interject her personal biases and insecurities. Please if you re reading this I know you re looking for a place to seek help but I promise you d be better off somewhere else. Please again take heed of the reviews! I hope you find the help you are seeking!

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. The South Shore Child Guidance Center’s Clinic Program provides a range of outpatient services that includes assessment, psychiatric evaluation, treatment, and support, while promoting social and educational development.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients in rehab aftercare programs receive a customized portfolio of services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. These clients have completed high-level treatment, are typically exiting detox and/or intensive inpatient care and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services address addiction disease as a chronic condition requiring continuing care. Clients typically work with case managers and recovery teams to access necessary resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction support.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
The ultimate goal of a sober living home in New York is to provide structure and support for those who want to maintain sobriety. Often, sober living homes are a transitional space for those moving from residential treatment to mainstream life. Residents typically stay at least 90 days, with most living in the halfway house for more than six months.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
A drug intervention in New York occurs when family members and friends lovingly confront someone with a substance use disorder. The goal of this confrontation is to motivate the person to seek treatment. Loved ones point out how the person's destructive behavior is affecting them in hopes that they will agree to get help. Most inpatient rehab facilities offer intervention services that can help families walk through this process step by step.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medical detox involves weaning your body off of addictive substances in a medically supervised environment. If you've become dependent on alcohol and/or drugs, quitting on your own can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. In medically assisted detox, a team of licensed medical professionals will help manage potential withdrawal symptoms, ensuring that you're as safe and comfortable as possible. This process typically takes about 5-7 days, although the length will depend on your individual needs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Introduced in 1983, motivational interviewing is a method to help clients commit to change. It's based on the philosophy that change is hard, and clients must explore their own options and come to their own conclusions rather than receive warnings or advice from the therapist.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

As you recover from addiction, eating the right foods will help you heal and build your health for long term sobriety. Nutrition therapy teaches you about the nutrition your body needs and how to eat the right foods to support your recovery.

In addiction treatment, recreational therapy focuses on engaging you in healthy activities to help reduce your cravings and improve your mental well being. You might engage in activities like cooking classes, hiking, group sports, or swimming as a constructive outlet for stress and emotions that help your recovery.

My children see Taylor and she is the absolute best of the best. I have never met someone who is so willing to advocate for not only my kids but for me as a parent as well. Even when I have to join her for a session she listens to my side and gives me advice on how to go about it. I have become a mother I never thought I could be because of her help. My kids have made so many changes in behavior thanks to her. I wish I could take her with me when I move. People like her don't come often and anyone would be lucky to have her as a therapist.

Don’t go here my son recieves chemotherapy & when on steroids he gets emotional, aggressive, agitated, etc. His therapist calls me all times of the day it’s all recorded at 6 am or 10 pm very unprofessional!! I requested a meeting with Dana Bazemore ( pats supervisor) and Patricia Malizio they are rude and don’t hear out the parents! All they were focused was on my sons feelings and nobody else’s not even the siblings after showing them videos of aggressive, concerning behaviors.. They called Cps all for Cps to close the case in 2 weeks like i told Dana they would, she says until you get the right worker as if she wanted them to take my kids! Very nasty! Glad everything was recorded on a body cam, they thought I was recording them on my phone. It wasn’t until I felt the shadiness in the room was when I turned it on! So they can’t lie on what they said! I said they will close the case like they did since they had 3 opened prior all on fake allegations! I called the Justice center, to report them both! The NYS professional medical hotline and also the NYS office of mental relations. I Ruffled Dana feathers that day! I wish she would deny what she said. Because I got emotional she asked me to have my son put into “foster care” and she had Pat call Cps. They failed, and I have everything recorded. She must of thought she was talking to a weak link. Because Pat is JUST his therapist not his mom or friend. Don’t bring your kids here! And they benefit of Course from having your kids on meds! They will misdiagnose them just for money! make Big pharma and Uncle Sam happy! They are horrible I’m mad I had to give them 1 star in order. To write my review! Everyone report them to the justice center and DOH! Expeditiously… this place needs to be shut down. I spoke to the chief director Jennifer Colbert and she wasn’t any help either. Go above them! Call the state! Get this place shut down. Nobody care’s from the very top chief of staff to just the supervisors like DANA! Then just the THERAPIST’s the front desk! I mean nobody there. I wish they will fail terribly when the DOH pops up on them! Have them shut down….

This place is absolutely horrible. Not only does this place do the OPPOSITE of what they are meant to do, but they make your problems even worse so I advise you, go somewhere better and not in some sketchy neighborhood with horrible therapists.

Bianca Nuñez has been my son's therapist for a couple of months now and I just came to the conclusion that this person has been doing more damage than good to my son's health. I visited the place for the second time a couple weeks ago and I left the place in panic. She used the time she was supposed to spend treating my child in personal accusations following the child's mother advice. Since there's a friendship between these two who are also coworkers, Ms. Nuñez proceeded to tell me to leave my house, while ignoring the fact that I was a victim of domestic violence from her coworker/friend. This indicates a lack of ability to perform her job properly. It lacks ethics and professionalism. Ms Bianca ignored the fact that she was using time that was paid by my child insurance to personally attack me. Stay away from this unprofessional, unpleasant, and nasty place.

Avoid this Clinic in Freeport like COVID -19. The Clinical Director of the children counseling center is a liar. They close out my daughters case in March of this year which was a lie. The Clinical Director of the children's program indicated that she had sent out a letter to my home indicating this......which was also a lie. I spoke with my daughters NP Kathy in May of this year so if her case was closed Kathy would not have given my daughter a call for a session. I informed Kathy that Sheryl the counseling for my daughter has not called her in a while and wanted to know if she had reached out to her. To my understanding you can not just see a NP or a psychiatrist if you do not have therapy in place. So this is another reason why the "Clinical Director" not assistant director Anna was LYING. Kathy informed me that Sheryl has not reached out to her regarding my child's progress in therapy nor has she stated that they case was closed. When I tried to get my child enrolled back into the program the Clinical Director was Very Rude and Nasty. Instead of assisting in this process she continue to state that the "SO Call Dates that her therapies had given me a Call" All Lies. I look in my cell phone and I never received a call from Sheryl- on the dates she indicated and her therapies was writing P-Notes for the false telephone calls. Then the Clinical Director gets upset and states to me are your calling me a Liar......Yes I am because this is what you ARE. SO nothing was accomplished during this call and the only reason why she reached out to me was to argue with a parent on the telephone. VERY Unprofessional...... I tried to call back to speak with the person over top of the Clinical Director of the children unit at South Shore but they keep given me the run around. If this is how this agency is RAN no one should attend their program. I will be given DOH a call to report them!!!
