After my personal experience, this rehab facility simply isn't the luxurious, professional program it very clearly represents itself to be on its beautiful website. It is very expensive (for private pay, about $45K for 30 days, in line with luxury rehab centers ). But Exclusive Hawaii Rehab is simply not the luxurious, customized experience described on the website.
So what about these 31 complementary reviews? Are they real? At this point, 31 reviews have been posted, all 5* except one 4*. Virtually all are exceptionally well written, frankly at college level proficiency. But to the point, these reviews describe something that was nothing like the reality I experienced.
Given the reviews on this site simply didn't match my experience, I checked another major customer review site. What I found was a consistent, totally different picture, very negative, and written at varying proficiency credible for real clients writing real reviews.
The actual physical facility is about 2* or perhaps 3*, not 4* or 5* as represented on the website. Typical is that the bathrooms are small and shared with another client or two. Okay, I can handle, but the charges are consistent with luxurious. Based upon observing two meals, the food appeared to be good at a home cooking level, but not even close to the level of "Private Chef" promised on the website. A little puffing is to be expected, but except for the beauty of the site, the description on the website is a fantasy and in my view a significant misrepresentation.
I also had a very negative experience with the staff person who took us through most of the admissions process. He was extremely unprofessional in appearance, being very overweight and sloppy in dress, with numerous facial piercings. Gang member fashion statement, and probably not an issue with the young clients under court order to go to rehab. But this is a very bad first impression for clients who are successful professionals or business people who expect at least a minimal level of professionalism on the part of the staff who interact with them.
More concerning was the inability to have a coherent dialogue and inability to deal with the issues I was raising regarding the program he was describing. I presented as a neatly dressed, well groomed person. This staff person told me three times that showers were required daily. Huh? Apparently he perceived this might be a problem with me. He told me the clients could have no coffee after 2 p.m. as prior clients had "abused" the availability of coffee. Laundry soap had to be checked out from staff for each load because prior clients had drank it. Group sessions were mandatory even if the subject matter didn't pertain to my situation, very excessive, often out of control social drinking, with none of the other trauma that often is part of alcoholism. When I pushed back on all group sessions being mandatory, he said I had to attend, but I didn't need to "participate." I could simply sit silently through the session. Is this a customized situation when the rules and the therapy are presented as "mandatory" until I push back.
Fortunately I got a full refund short of $2.5K of the deposit. That was fair. Note that I brought a check to cover the balance and there had not been an opportunity to deposit it yet. My uncashed check was returned to me upon departure.
Have I got this radically wrong? I recommend you do your research before committing to a program that you hope will reorient your life.
By the way, I had an exchange of emails with the owner regarding the refund situation, and I offered to share my notes of this experience. The response resolved the deposit issue, but no comment on the offer to share the experiences. One would think that a facility that aspires to be a very high quality operation would want to review a customer's views, positive or negative, when offered.
Now, will Exclusive Hawaii Rehab get this review taken down? We shall see.
