I m a patient at Marquette hospital in room 420 April 7, 8 & maybe tomorrow. I have not showered now for since the morning on the 6th at home. Checked into ER the morning of the 7th at 10:30am. Having sitting in the ER till 10:00pm having waves of sweating and getting cold in ER then transferring up to my room late at night and not feeling well because I was having a hard time breathing and so late at not night and nurses really busy getting me situated in my room. Woke up on the 8th and had to go bathroom I have an alarm on bed so needed to let nurse know so they could help me to bathroom. Well I must of gone to the bathroom about 8 to 11 times. Well they marked my board as high fall risk because I had a stroke 13 years ago. But thank god for the female nurse Jamie on one shift and female nurse Madie I think on other shift saw when I had to go bathroom allowed me to walk to the bathroom with my walking stick watching me walk to the bathroom by myself and told me when done pull the cord so they could meet me to watch or help if need me to get back to my bed. Well I found out I water on lungs the doctor said he was going to give me something to help get rid of the water on lungs. I asked the doctor if I could go for a walk twice around the corridor and he said that would be good so that way I would know how the shortness of breath changes before taking that medicine and walking after how well it works. So I walked twice around corridor without any help at all with nurse behind me with wheelchair incase I needed it.Also I had an Echocardiogram and had what ever lubricant they use on my chest. So shift change again at 8pm. New Male nurse Jamie RN was with out going nurse in my room when I asked male nurse Jamie if I can take a shower and before I got the words out he said NO. I don t know if I have time because I have to have someone in bathroom watching me because of the high fall risk and didn t have any one that could watch me even know I told him I have walk around corridor and walk to bathroom and don t have anyone watch me on toilet. By him saying NO so quick and abrasive I felt afraid, even afraid to ask him if I could take my second walk or even ask to go to the bathroom though the rest of his shift. Even know he was tying to be nice on his shift I was still afraid of him because of how the beginning of his shift stated with me. And some people don t realize for some stroke patients they are more emotional and get intimidated easy. And I wanted to take my shower because on the 9th I have stress test. So after two days of sweat and lubricant from tests I have to go another day without a shower before my stress test in morning. And the thing is, he had been doing computer work right outside my door for about 45 minutes. In that 45 minutes outside my door he could of helped me get into the bathroom get the shower chair ready go do his paperwork outside my room while I shower and come and get me when I pull the cord and help me back to my bed. I have a few times I been unsteady in 13 years since my stroke, but that never stopped me from going skydiving, zip lining in several different countries, hot air ballooning and Wing Walking on top of and biplane in the UK. It s not right, not right at all that I had to lay in my own stink because he wouldn t allow me to shower. You would think that paying the thousands of dollars for a room per night you could take a shower when you want. And yes the hospital can contact me to talk about it if they want you have my records so you have my email and phone number.P.S everybody in ER was very nice friendly and helpful and every Nurse on my floor was outstanding except for that one.

My grandma has had to come here from Portage many times for maintenance on her fistula. She has always had such amazing things to say about the doctors and nurses that care for her. She was ecstatic after her appointment two weeks ago, right after she got back from the IR suite, she said they brought me a sandwich! I didn t even have to ask! Thank you for always treating patients with compassion.

Accepted Insurance

UP Medical Group | Marquette Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients in inpatient rehab reside at the treatment facility while engaging in intensive daily treatment. Inpatient care is primarily designed for clients leaving detox, those in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Clients participate in intensive addiction counseling, which may include group and family therapy as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills training is also often prioritized. Many inpatient rehabs offer evidence-based complementary therapies, such as yoga, meditation, art therapy, and animal therapy.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients engaged in a rehab aftercare program have already completed high-level treatment and have begun to develop essential recovery skills. Rehab aftercare services are designed to support clients' sustained sobriety as they reintegrate into their home, workplace, and community. Case managers, care teams, and clients design the customized service portfolio that will best support the client's long-term sobriety. Clients may receive peer coaching, 12 step program induction, vocational training, and relapse prevention services.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Sorry this is a long review but I've waited over 5 years to say this. For those of you living in Marquette and surrounding areas, be warned! If you end up suffering a tramatic brain injury of any kind and go to this hospital to save your life, there's a good chance you won't be saved. My Mother was admitted on December 19th of 2019 after going into Vfib at Aspen Dental down the street following having permanent denture put in. When she arrived at the ER, the doctor in charge of her care stabilized her heart rhythm but failed to realize anything else could be going on. For 3 hours my Mom laid they under heavy sedation on a ventilator until 2 other doctors came in and looked her chart. When one of them asked my Mom's doctor, "why hasn't she had a head CT SCAN", my heart sank and almost leapt out of my chest. They rushed to get the scan and when they came back the doctor just said "I'm sorry but she's had a significant brain bleed". What happened next was the most shocking thing I have ever been witness to in my life. They admitted her to the 4th floor and started making phone calls trying to find a hospital that they could transfer her to because they didn't have any Neurosurgeon to perform the emergency surgery to try to save her life. It took from 6 p.m. until 3 a.m. before they got her on a flight to send her to UM Hospital in Ann Arbor. Needless to say, I knew it was way to late and it would be the last time I would ever see her again. And it was. She was pronounced brain dead, taken off life support and died the next day. I found out the exact same situation happened 8 years prior to a friend of mine who lives in Marquette who suffered a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage, like my Mom did, but she was able to tell the doctor at the ER what happened to her. They did the head scan right away and within an hour flew her to Ann Arbor where they were able to save her life. She's still alive and well 15 years since then. I believe there were several factors that lead to my Mom's death, from the time she was picked up from the dental office by ambulance and taken to to hospital, to the attending physician not thinking her Vfib was caused by a brain hemorrhage (which is the case) and doing a head scan right away, to finally there being NO Neurosurgeon on staff, on or off duty. How can a hospital be allowed to operate without a Neurosurgeon on staff??! That's like not having an Anesthesiologist or a Cardiologist. It's unacceptable, irresponsible and outrageous! Something needs to be done to fix this situation or more people living there will die unnecessarily because Marquette General, now a "For Profit" hospital doesn't have the appropriate doctor(s) on staff. My heart goes out to family members of those living there who's loved one has suffered this same fate.

A very positive experience. I was there for two days for surgery and recovery. Everyone was professional, supportive and empathetic, and all my needs were met. They were quick to respond to all my requests, and made me feel well cared for throughout my stay. I'm thankful to have such great medical support locally.

This hospital is a joke they don’t care about veterans with mental health issues they go against court orders on having someone committed and send them jail instead of getting the help they actually need and Dr Rubel is the doctor that is uneducated with mental health problems and shouldn’t be a doctor

The staff at this hospital save lives. My closest friend experienced acute sepsis caused by an obstructed inflamed bowel after being transferred from an ER 3 hours away and the team acted promptly, calmly, and decisively to identify the condition, stabilize him, and steadily nurse him back to good health in the ICU and 6th floor. The doctors, nurse practitioner, nurses, techs, and transport crews were incredibly attentive, encouraged questions and conversation, and genuinely wanted him to feel well cared for and hopeful as he recovered. He's made a full recovery and is still with us today because of this hospital staffs' competence, compassion, and commitment to caring for their patients. Thank you, UP Health System - Marquette, for doing what you do.

Everyone from EMS, the ED, the physical therapist, and on the floor I was admitted to went above and beyond to make sure I was well informed and taken care of. Dr. Butcher was wonderful and my 7th floor nurses were amazing, especially Elizabeth and Brian. We are lucky to have this hospital with such passionate and dedicated staff taking care of our community.

I recently had two separate imaging appointments at the hospital -- a routine mammogram and an MRI. Both experiences were flawless. I was able to schedule quickly, the pre-registration was a breeze, the on-site directions were clear and easy to follow, and the imaging providers were professional and empathetic.

Visited the hospital for an outpatient procedure on 4/8. The preregistration request arrived a few days in advance and was easy to complete. On the day of the procedure, the entire team—from reception and registration to nursing staff and the physician—was helpful, courteous, and professional. The experience was smooth from start to finish.

I feel so fortunate to have a major hospital like UPHS - Marquette in our area. I've been dealing with some notable nerve pain and was able to get an MRI in a reasonable timeframe; I had been told by others to expect weeks but it was much quicker than that. From check-in to walking me out post-scan, the staff were friendly, helpful, and professional. The online check-in sped things up too and having the online portal to results is so nice. No organization is perfect, but it really does feel like things are moving in the right direction here.

I would to thank UPHS and Emergency Room Department for providing a great experience when I brought my Mom in yesterday afternoon/evening. From the time we walked in the door at registration, to Sam the triage nurse, Danielle the emergency room nurse and Dr. Toth, my Mom experienced prompt attention and compassionate care. Thank you for your professionalism and kindness.
