About Alternative Paths, Inc.

Alternative Paths, Inc. in Medina, Ohio, provides a broad range of services for adults and youth in Medina County. They have adult and youth addiction treatment and mental health services, which include medication assisted treatment (MAT), case management and peer support. They also have DUI and court diversion programs along with an opioid response team that coordinates with the Medina County Sheriff.

Services for Those Involved in the Justice System

Alternative Paths has an impressive array of services for those involved in the justice system, from jail services to court diversion programs for youth and adults. They offer substance use disorder and mental health screenings for those in the Medina County Jail, along with treatment services and case management. Inmates can even start medication assisted treatment in jail if appropriate for their needs. Alternative Paths also helps people transition out of jail by providing support with housing and other services to reduce the chances of reoffense.

Diversion programs at Alternative Paths allow the team to work with the courts to provide treatment and monitoring to non violent offenders to help them avoid jail time. These services include assessments, counseling and crisis support. Alternative Paths runs diversion programs for adults and for youth in the juvenile justice system.

Opiate Response Team in Medina County

Another unique feature of this organization is that they coordinate with the local sheriff’s office in response to opioid overdose. They aim to engage with a person who has overdosed to offer them treatment and other support to meet their needs.

The goal is to meet with someone who overdosed within 72 hours of the event. They make three attempts to contact the person after a referral. The meeting might be in a hospital, in the clinic or even at the person’s home. They encourage the person to seek treatment and provide multiple treatment options, and the staff does their best to track the person’s progress over the next 30 days.

ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL DRIVERS INTERVENTION PROGRAM! It was so much more than I expected. I did DIP 14 years ago at a different facility and it was nothing like this. Lenny is absolutely incredible and was always available for questions or concerns. I did 57 days in a rehab and got SO much more in these 3 days than I did with those 57 days. Lenny and his partnering staff were wonderful. I'm grateful to have 'randomly' chosen this place to do my DIP. Had a great group of people. Food was great (SO MUCH FOOD LOL), plenty of breaks, great insight, information and knowledge. Highly recommend Alternative Paths for DIP. I truly did not want to leave but they gave me so much information and I know I can use it in my daily life now!Thank you for everything, Lenny!!!

Alternative Paths has been wonderful to me and for me.As a Veteran who can access care at the VA, but doesn't necessarily like driving to Cleveland - I have found an amazing provider (Eric Steiner) here who has given me the mental health support that I need to continue to thrive in my recovery. As a person who also struggles with substance use disorder I have found that he's reliable, consistent, and experienced in the therapy that he provides. The safe and nonjudgemental environment he established from the beginning has been very impactful. I especially appreciate his appointment reminders (he does them himself). His therapy continues to be effective and he has helped me to navigate several challenges. The Alternative Paths receptionists always greet me with kindly. The lobby is full of resources and the rates are quite reasonable.

Very disappointed in this practice. After numerous attempts to correct billing problems we finally switched practices and filed an appeal with our insurance provider. None of their staff responded back except the case manager Kat, who was apologetic for any perceived miscommunication. I do understand clinical confidentiality but as a parent there are certain rights I have when allowing my minor child to be treated.

Accepted Insurance

Alternative Paths, Inc. works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are designed for clients who need frequent, high-level care but do not require, or choose to forgo, inpatient treatment. Most intensive outpatient rehabs offer a minimum of nine hours of treatment weekly, though clients may receive up to 20 hours of care as needed. These programs typically combine various treatment modalities, including individual, group, and family counseling, medication assisted treatment (MAT), addiction and recovery education, and evidence-based complementary therapies, such as acupuncture and massage.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Designed for individuals with moderate to severe addictions, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides a more intensive form of outpatient therapy. PHP treatment can serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a step-down option after being discharged from a hospital or residential program. A partial hospitalization program typically requires a minimum of 20 hours weekly for an average of 90 days. Depending on your care plan, PHPs can include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medical detox involves clearing your body of drugs and/or alcohol under the 24/7 care of licensed medical professionals. If you've become dependent on alcohol or drugs (like benzodiazepines or opioids), quitting abruptly can have uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects. The purpose of medically assisted detox is to keep you as safe and comfortable as possible during this process. Medications like Suboxone or Vivitrol may be provided if necessary to mitigate any withdrawal symptoms.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Very unprofessional and very uncaring. They made me talk about everything over and over in detail only for them to think I was crazy. They turned me away because I don't have health insurance.

The nurse practionor all of sudden stopped giving me my medicine which induced psychosis and refused to help me. I feel she had me confused with one of her other client's and refused to schedule an appointment to speak to me. Please do not send your loved ones here..they do not know how to treat patients professionally with mental illness

Dr Mahajan was a joke. No "bedside manner." And they refused to switch doctors without ever telling me why or that they wouldn't switch me. My therapist had to check the situation out and inform me that the Dr. wouldn't let me switch. Now they want to charge me for a psychiatrist I didn't want to see. The last therapist was great, but didn't stay with the agency real long. No replacement was available. Therapists there never seem to stay long, so how do you get any work done or make progress.? If I could make a negative star rating, I would!

By far the best facility I've been to in years. I've been downstairs and the only real help I ever received there was with Yolanda. I truly appreciate that I was referred here!!

This place is a joke. They forced me to do appointments on 2 separate consecutive days to bill my insurance for more money. Apparently there is no one in this facility that identifies themself as a doctor either. Not sure what they actually do here but I’m not coming back to find out.

Constantly messes up. Very limited availability. Not helpful whatsoever through my years of dealing with health issues. Always have to go elsewhere. Waste of time.
