About Alton Memorial Hospital

Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Illinois offers medical stabilization services for adults who are experiencing alcohol and substance use disorder.

Inpatient Medical Stabilization

Their inpatient medical stabilization unit is staffed by highly qualified addiction professionals who provide assessment, support and detox using FDA approved medications. Detox is often the first step towards recovery, especially for individuals with alcohol, opioid, benzodiazepine and certain stimulant addictions. During detox, individuals receive around the clock medical supervision including emotional and physical care. The average length of stay for medical detox is generally 3-7 days, depending on the severity of the addiction and overall physical and mental health.

The use of medication assisted detox helps during the earliest stages of recovery by easing withdrawal symptoms, stabilizing body functions and normalizing brain function. As well, the use of medication assisted treatment has been shown to reduce the risk of overdose death, decrease criminal activity related to substance use disorder and lower infectious disease transmission. Most importantly, the use of medication assisted detox and treatment improves long term recovery success.

Inpatient Medical Stabilization

Once an individual has completed detox they will work with their peer recovery specialists to create a treatment plan to meet their ongoing recovery needs. This includes providing referrals to the appropriate level of care and programs that will support sobriety.

Alton Memorial accepts most major commercial insurance plans and Medicaid. For individuals without health insurance, they have plans to help them pay their hospital bills. Their insurance and billing department can assist you with understanding your benefits, including out of pocket expenses and can work with you to develop a payment plan for those who meet certain financial criteria.

If zero stars was possible that s what they would get. This hospital is old and busted. My boyfriend went there about a week ago due to a cut on his eyelid and required 3 sutures. The lady who gave the stitches must not have known what she was doing because one of the sutures was on the very edge of the wound and could have easily ripped right through. ANOTHER issue? This woman. She told us they would be dissolvable sutures, well that wasn t freaking right. She said in 7-10 days they ll be dissolved and you can take them out at home. No need to come in and get them removed. Yeah they re blue but they ll still dissolve. 100000% WRONG. It s been 7+ days and there was ABSOLUTELY no sign of them dissolving, but you know what there was signs of? The sutures ripping through his skin while it was healing. But they want to charge $500+ for this? But can t even get your stuff together? I will be making a call in to complain as well. This is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable.

I went to the ER 3/11 with a splitting headache and seeing sparkles. After taking a cat scan and told to sit in waiting room for 4hrs. I was told I wasn t critical enough to be seen. That they saw the most critical first. Then they saw a woman who had fallen 3 days earlier and wanted to check out her hurting leg. So a hurt leg is more critical than a splitting headache?? I left after 5 and a half hours! Very poor service

Accepted Insurance

Alton Memorial Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients in outpatient rehab receive a variety of services based on their unique and evolving needs. Typical outpatient treatment modalities include individual, group, and family counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and community reintegration support. Many programs also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT) for clients recovering from alcohol and/or opioid dependency. Clients exiting inpatient treatment or those who are at an elevated risk of relapse may engage in more robust treatment, such as intensive outpatient (IOP) programming.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs provide a full continuum of care for clients who are exiting inpatient treatment. Though outpatient care is often considered an element of drug rehab aftercare, services typically continue for the remainder of the clients' life and long after formal treatment is completed. Clients work with their case managers and care team to formulate a customized portfolio of medical, mental health, and social service resources designed to evolve as the client's needs change.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Illinois is designed to help people recover from addiction to a number of substances. The length of each program and its intensity tend to vary, and the plan of care is based on your individual needs.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

On 2/10/25 at 8 months pregnant I came to the ER with horrible nausea, hadn’t eaten in days, and over all feeling unwell. I was diagnosed with FluA and sent home, told to come back if things worsen. On 2/12/25 I came back with worsening symptoms and was told it would be an 8-10 hour wait, after having told them I felt like I was DYING. Again 8 months pregnant AND a high risk pregnancy. I went home feeling defeated and so weak I didn’t think I would make it to another hospital. My fiancé called 911 and we were taken to AMH. Now while I don’t remember anything, my fiancé and family experienced all of it. My diagnoses were, FluA, double pneumonia, dka, preeclampsia and I had a seizure. It was obvious I was not well and the concern was my daughter wouldn’t make it. And that’s exactly what happened. On 2/15/25 we found out our sweet Emersyn didn’t make it and how my family found out is repulsive. My fiancé had left the room to find my parents and as soon as they came back, the nurse came out of the room and yelled “baby doesn’t have a heartbeat, there’s nothing we can do” They hadn’t even entered the room yet. While I understand my family needed to know that information, there was a much better way to deliver that news. Whoever the nurse was that night needs training, or a different career. Not only was I actively dying, (just like I told them at a previous visit), but my baby DID die. My poor fiancé is traumatized. He almost lost me.. we lost our baby. How dare someone be so cruel. I was not triaged correctly, my family was mistreated and overall the experience has left us heartbroken and also worried for others who may go through something similar. If you are pregnant, even if not high risk, please go to Barnes first. They were incredible.

Wish I could give it a 0 star. The ER here is so disorganized and has no since of urgency when there is a person in distress. The receptionist and the nurses are very rude and unprofessional. I live in this town and will always drive out of my way to be seen elsewhere. Everytime I come I am reminded why I hate coming here.

Worst hospital in town, unprofessional staff, security is rude and overbearing. St. Anthony's staff is amazing and wait time is much, much faster.
