About Atlantic Health System Laboratory Services

Atlantic Health System – Overlook Medical Center Outpatient Services is a place of recovery and can help you with your addiction. They offer help through their outpatient program which is where they will conduct therapy to combat mental health issues and addiction. This place is in Summit, New Jersey and they are right next to Summit Community Center.

This center is pretty flexible. They offer telehealth as an option to receive treatment. Some people actually prefer this option rather than going in. It’s because they can choose their environment to receive their therapy session. As you can guess, comfort is important when going through your thoughts and feelings and it’s important to have a space that allows you to express those emotions. Not to mention that having telehealth as an option allows you to connect from anywhere with a wifi connection. If you have to travel for work, you can take advantage of this.

People have said great things about this place. But their comments are more so directed at primary health rather than behavioral care.

You can expect to wait a long time at this or any other Atlantic Health location that I have had experience with. Most recently, my Atlantic Health doctor was 45 minutes late for my appointment.

Continuation of post:While my sister was on her deathbed, she began to spit up what looked like coffee grounds. I learned that this was a side effect from all of the chemo drugs she had been given to include: Abraxane, Carboplatin and Keytruda, which can cause your immune system to attack normal organs and tissues in any area of your body and can sometime become severe or life-threatening and can lead to death. You can have more than one of these problems at the same time. These problems may happen any time during treatment or even after your treatment has ended . This information was ascertained from the Keytruda.com website. The point to be made is that all chemo drugs can potentially cause irreversible damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. This is a known fact. There are people that die from cancer, but I am willing to bet that most people die from cancer treatment. I believe some doctors use the excuse that the cancer spread to other organs, when it is damage to the organs caused by the drug.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction is a difficult process, but through careful evaluation and individual determination, it can be accomplished. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, their outpatient chemical dependency programs help adults and adolescents overcome substance abuse issues, while remaining at home, at school or on the job.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients often enter inpatient rehab following detox, but they may also enroll during early recovery or at an increased risk of relapse. Inpatient rehabs provide housing, meals, and intensive clinical supervision, allowing clients to focus exclusively on their recovery in a highly structured and supportive environment. Clients typically receive multiple individual, group, and/or family therapy sessions weekly. Many programs also offer extensive addiction education and recovery-focused life skills training. Integrative inpatient rehabs provide holistic therapies as well.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Group-based psycho-education and therapy is provided during a three-hour period, three to five days a week. Because patients in our program return home after treatment sessions, they can more quickly begin the transition to everyday living situations and challenges.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients in a rehab aftercare program have typically completed detox and intensive inpatient and are medically stable. These programs are designed to address addiction recovery as a life-long process. Outpatient counseling and recovery education are typically categorized as drug rehab aftercare, but many clients continue to receive support after being discharged from formal outpatient treatment. Case managers and recovery teams facilitate clients' access to peer coaching, career counseling, 12 step program induction, and related services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
In the event of a psychiatric emergency, Atlantic Behavioral Health offers crisis intervention services, including a 24-hour hotline, risk assessments and screenings, and community trauma assistance. Newton Medical Center is a state-designated Psychiatric Emergency Services and Screening Center, providing 24-hour emergency mental health care to patients of any age, both over the phone and in person.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
A medical detox is the safest way to wean your body off addictive substances. When you become physically dependent on alcohol or drugs, quitting abruptly can cause a host of challenging and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. In medically assisted detox, a team of medical professionals will be on hand to monitor any symptoms, to provide medication if possible, and to help keep you as safe and as comfortable as possible throughout this process.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. When a traumatic or catastrophic event occurs – whether at school, work, the neighborhood or larger community – Atlantic Behavioral Health is there to help survivors, witnesses and their families begin the healing process.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Counseling that includes parental and family involvement is central to their program and highly encouraged. Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy is more than a simple meal plan during rehab. It's designed to facilitate a faster recovery by giving your body the nutrients it needs to heal. It aids in strengthening your systems and giving you the energy you need for daily functioning and success in other therapies.

Recreational therapy is a dynamic approach to addiction treatment in New Jersey. It integrates activities like music therapy, team sports, and gardening so you have a therapeutic outlet for your emotions and stress. This improves your physical and mental health and helps you develop new skills to support a sober lifestyle.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

I gave birth to my wonderful son here June 2022. I had a great team or nurses alongside my doctor who were very supportive and efficient. My experience was smooth and comforting as well as the space my family had over the couple days was perfect

Ive had an excellent 6 day stay on the second floor. A wonderful surgeon, Dr Patel. A knee surgery with some complications on my end. The staff is caring, delightful efficient. My regular diet food was a lot better than expected. I really enjoyed all my meals. I most definitely recommend this hospital for your medical needs.

My partner just called about if they have a GI available at the moment because the other hospital we went to didn’t have a GI and her issues gotten worse after discharge and the lady on the phone for this hospital was rude asf she snapped at my partner and gave her a tone and tude when just asking about if one is available. It was around 7:15 on a Friday May 23 2025 and she said to call our doctor or just come in and hung up on my partner. Very unprofessional looking into other hospitals rather drive farther than be treated like dog crap. To whoever answered the phone you are reason why people are hesitant and don’t go to get help until its really too late.

I have been sitting in the ER for HOURS with my child waiting for someone from psych to come talk to us and it hasn’t happened. In fact NO ONE has talked to us for hours since we spoke with crisis. We’ve been in a room since 6pm 5/22. It’s now almost 5am 5/23 and no one has updated me on when or if psych is coming, what’s going on. Nothing. The crisis team even took a paper I need filled out a disappeared with it.

Son went to ED last night, around 5 pm for severe sinus infection that 3 other urgent cares did not take care of. Didn’t have to wait more than 5 mins in waiting room, he was taken back, immediately had the attention he needed. I’d say w/in an hr the doc came in, listened to his history, ordered CT scan of head to make sure everything was good. Had results in about an hour, given 1 dose of antibiotics, told what to do and what not to do and discharged by 9 pm, give or take. CLEAN HOSPITAL, EXCELLENT CARE, EXTREMELY ATTENTIVE & NICE. Took the time with you, Actually have a small room for family to get coffee/juice/crackers, to walk away for a few seconds

I had an excellent experience at this hospital, from the moment I walked in. The reception and check-in process were smooth and well-organized. The entire facility was clean, well-maintained, and everything ran efficiently. The nurses were kind, attentive, and professional, and the doctors made me feel safe and confident throughout my surgery. I truly appreciate the care and support I received. Highly recommend

My mother in law ended up in Overlook after a stroke and unfortunately she ended up on hospice and passing away after further complications. The staff there including her physician, nurses, case managers, priests and social workers and all the supporting staff were very kind and accommodated my wife’s cultural and religious needs. They were patient and respectful. Thank you

My daughter recently stayed at Overlook and I cannot speak highly enough about the level of care she received. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to ensure her comfort and well-being. The nurses were not only highly skilled, but also genuinely kind and attentive—always ready to answer questions and make sure I was at ease.

Horrible patient relations and patient care. The Neuroscience center and Dr Carminucci were fantastic. But some of the staff on the 5th floor were horrible to my kind and gentle 82 year old father prior to his surgery, specifically 2 women. I strongly feel that his poor, unethical treatment of him was because he was an older white male. I’ll explain more below and why I feel this way. These two women nurses or CMA’s who happened to be dark skinned treated him like trash. I say that because he had a roommate who was doted on and he was darker skinned. They were constantly taking care of the other gentleman, his roommate. Sometimes both of them would be taking care of him. Right in front of my father after he tried to get help from them several times. This was right before his spinal surgery so he was in alot of pain needing morphine and a lot of care. They were rough when it came time for them to do anything for him, like their daily duties such as vitals. They didnt clean him, he sat in his urine, spoke down to him, ignored his calls into the nurses station for help when his morphine wore off, they were late a lot, they left him sitting in his feces for over an hour and a half. He called my mother to call the nurses station because they were ignoring him. They blamed the typical COVID staffing issues but remember they took care of his roommate All day long. Even right after my father paged them. The only relief was when the two of them left for the day. I’m highly disappointed, disgusted and will definitely be reporting this to the proper individuals at Atlantic Health. This is Not the only Atlantic Health facility that he experienced horrendous care. I’ll be letting everyone know his follow up care at Hackettstown Hospital as well as Kessler in Chester and a Post Acute Facility across from Morristown (not affiliated with Atlantic Health). On a side note regarding the Morristown Post Acute Rehab facility… no one should ever put their elder parents there. Ever. The care was so bad we had to stay over to make sure he was taken care of. A nurse actually said to us, “get your father out of here as fast as you can”

I have had four procedures in the last six months, three of which were at OMC. The facility and staff were outstanding, I appreciate the staff and am grateful. OMC was much easier to work with compared to the provider’s office and organization. I especially appreciated the pre-op team helping me ensure that UHC pre-authorization and claim approval was in-place. The quality of care and bedside manner were both great. As a longtime Summit resident, I feel that we are so fortunate to have the OMC facility and staff in our community. Just one feedback point. Upon arrival at the main hospital entrance, bleary-eyed before 6AM, on all there occasions I had a concerning interaction with a security-type individual. This somewhat self-important staff member was not in uniform nor did he have a name badge to my recollection. I felt “accosted” the moment I entered, as he insisted on asking “20 questions”, with no discernible purpose or value. This detracted from the experience that was otherwise outstanding.
