I can’t say enough good things about Unity Psych Care. They took such great care of my dad during a really difficult time for our family. What stood out the most was how informative everyone was—they always took the time to explain his treatment plan, answer our questions, and keep us updated. It made a huge difference in helping us feel comfortable and confident in the care he was receiving. Latoya was a very good nurse who always ensured he was in good hands. Thank you for making our lives easier.

Im so grateful for the care my mother received at Unity Psychiatric Care. The staff truly made a difference in her mental health journey. They were patient, compassionate, and created a safe environment where she could begin to heal and feel like herself again. You can tell they genuinely care about their patients—not just treating them, but helping them grow stronger mentally and emotionally. Because of them, my mom is in a much better place, and our family has so much peace. My only complaint is they lost some of her clothing items Highly recommend to anyone who wants real, meaningful care for their loved one.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Do NOT send your loved one to Unity Psychiatric Hospital, in Columbia, TN. I would give ZERO stars, if I could. My Mom had dementia, and was getting agitated and combatative. Her primary care physician suggested sending her to Unity, for a few days, to get her on the proper medication. (We had tried several medications, but felt like we needed the help of someone specialized in Dementia. I had been told that Unity was 90% dementia patients, so I had high hopes.) We thought my Mom would be there, a week and a half to two weeks, but she was there for three and a half. She got a urinary tract infection, after her first week & that was a major setback. This was a huge red flag for me.....her UTI was noticed on a Monday. They tested her, that evening & she tested positive on the urine test. They did not treat her until that Thursday. (They wanted to wait until they got the culture results, first). I disagreed with that, and begged them to start her on an antibiotic. They went against my wishes. It was during this time that my Mom's agitation escalated. And also during that time that one of her hearing aids was lost. (The administrator agreed to pay me for replacement hearing aids that I purchased, but so far.....I have not received that payment.) There was a time that my Mom fell, but was not injured. The staff made her use a wheelchair, afterwards, but......she wasn't receiving any physical therapy, at all. Also....my Mom (early on) started talking with slurred speech. I felt she was being over-medicated, and voiced my concerns. I was told that the medication she was on.....needed to "level out". After 3 weeks, I felt as though my Mom was not improving, and was only getting worse. We arranged for her to go to Marshall Medical, in Lewisburg (where she had EXCELLENT care). When my sister and I went to get her, my Mom was slumped over, in a wheelchair. She could not walk or talk, and we found out later that she was having trouble feeding herself. It was heartbreaking. With her discharge papers, there was a list of the medications that they had her on. Two anti-depressants, two anti-psychotics, among other drugs, but they also put her on CHOLESTEROL MEDICATION. Why????? There was NO NEED in that, plus.... I was never informed of that. My Mom spent a week and a half at Marshall Medical, but....unfortunately passed away. I do not think Unity caused her death, but....if they suspected that her dementia was rapidly progressing, they should have told us, so we could have gotten her in a nursing home (where we could have spent time with her). At Unity, you cannot visit whenever you want. There are only certain days (never on a weekend, either) that they allow it, and you have to make an appointment to visit your loved one. Plus, you only get 30 min. (I did not know about those rules, beforehand, or I would have thought a little harder before deciding on my Mom staying there). We were allowed to call her (but only during certain times), and couldn't call her at all, her first two days. We could call and check on her, any time, though. Usually, we were just told that "she was doing good". (There was one nurse, DeeDee, that was honest, and would tell if my Mom was being combatative, or not. Thank you, for that). Olivia, Susan, and Kim were great, too, I will add. Even so..... I'm not happy with the care she received. I have already expressed my feelings, to the administrator, in an email.....but never got a response. I'm honestly not sure there's anything he could say to make me feel better. I would still be leaving this review, regardless. (I'm kicking myself, for not getting my Mom out sooner. But, we were trying to have faith that we were doing the right thing.) Take my word..... DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE TO THIS FACILITY. Edited to add a photo of the rules that I was given, when my Mom was admitted. I wasn't wrong. We even asked for you guys to make an exception, for my brother (who works on visitation days), during a conference call (that he & I both were on), and you guys said "no"

Response from the owner
Barby, we understand you’re disappointed with our Columbia hospital and are concerned about your comments. Be assured, the health of our patients is of utmost importance. We have investigated this concern further and want to note that our visitation policy is not accurately described in your comments above and we regret there was a misunderstanding on that matter. Regarding the reimbursement for the hearing aids, it is currently being processed. Feel free to email us privately at Concerns@AmHealthPartners.com with further concerns.
