About Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center – Dr. James J. Wright Building

Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center’s Dr. James J. Wright Building offers personalized and effective care for seniors over 60 facing substance use and mental health challenges in Indianapolis, Indiana. They offer general and intensive outpatient (IOP) care for adults with mental health conditions alongside harm reduction services like overdose lifeline NaloxBox distribution.

They’re situated on North Illinois Street, close by US Highway 31 in the Near Northside neighborhood close to downtown and Fall Creek Trail. IndyGo Bus Route 34 stops near the clinic.

As part of Eskenazi Health’s network, the facility ensures broader access to care by accepting Medicaid, Medicare and several commercial plans. A discount or sliding fee scale option is available for the uninsured or underinsured.

Ceramics, Arts, and Therapy

Their outpatient mental health and substance use recovery promotes independent living for seniors in a community setting. They leverage their interdisciplinary team to deliver therapy in groups and individual sessions that draw from cognitive behavioral techniques and wellness recovery action plans. These models help you build strong coping strategies and lay a foundation for lasting recovery and independent living.

You may particularly benefit from their specialized art groups encompassing ceramics program, Glad Writings Card Shop and studio art. This offers a creative outlet for self-expression, skill-building, and emotional healing. They may integrate primary medical care and psychiatric services to ensure well-rounded recovery. Case managers coordinate care and provide links to community resources to address housing and employment.

We like the fact that patients can receive this full spectrum of services at nursing homes, retirement homes and assisted living facilities or any convenient community setting. Crisis support and inpatient care are available for those experiencing acute psychiatric and substance use issues.

Worst place to get care. Adult son went there and they absolutely messed everything up. His meds were 100 percent covered so they changed it to same meds but injection, not informing us it would be 45 dollar charge. So back to PO ( pills) and now they charge 30.00 for what used to be covered. He asked coordinator for a care plan that never worked out, almost got family evicted. Coordinator never helped with finding a job, getting food stamps and called CPS cause she said that he was too unstable to live with the family but she didn t find him any housing or acute care treatment. The same person that reported him is the person responsible to assist with services.Do not even go here. Call your insurance and ask for another provider.

If you want help finding housing this is most definitely NOT the place to look for assistance. Solomon??? has no concept of need, he has handshake agreements with different "Friends" to place you in a sleeping room. Period. If you want something that has a level of privacy such as an apartment he will simply put your name on waiting lists. Said waiting lists are full and you will die of old age before your name makes it to the top. There is no communication with the client, he talks a big game when you can hear but no further action is taken. He signed me up with a nursing home and two complex but none of them will happen to have a vacancy for months.

Accepted Insurance

Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center – Dr. James J. Wright Building works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab provides intensive, round-the-clock care and is designed primarily for clients who have just completed detox, those in early recovery, and those at an increased risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment typically includes extensive psychotherapy that draws on various modalities like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing. Clients also learn the recovery-focused life skills needed to promote sustained recovery. Many inpatient drug rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies like meditation, yoga, massage, and experiential therapy.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Persons who require high-level support but who do not wish to leave their homes or communities may enroll in an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Clients typically commit to a minimum of nine treatment hours across three therapeutic sessions per week, but many programs offer up to 20 hours of care weekly. Most intensive outpatient rehabs provide a combination of psychotherapy, recovery education, and holistic care. Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is widely available for those in alcohol or opioid recovery.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program have completed inpatient care and may also be preparing to exit formal outpatient care. Outpatient services are typically categorized as rehab aftercare, but these services often continue beyond the cessation of formal treatment. Rehab aftercare services are designed to promote life-long recovery through comprehensive, wraparound care, which may include medical, mental health, and social services. These programs are usually created in collaboration with the client's case manager and care team.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
The number one rule of a sober living home in Indiana is that residents cannot use or bring alcohol or drugs into the home. Breaking this rule typically results in eviction. In addition to this rule, men's and women's sober living homes have other standards that residents must meet. These usually include maintaining a job, helping with meal preparation and house cleaning, and attending 12-step meetings.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When families plan a drug intervention in Indiana, the goal is to create self-awareness in their loved one, so they acknowledge the need for treatment and get help. A professional interventionist can work with the individual's family members to organize this intervention and provide direction for follow-up. During the intervention, loved ones share how the individual's substance abuse has affected them, and the interventionist adds a clinical perspective on how treatment can help the situation.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) can provide intensive rehab on a short-term basis. While PHP treatment typically requires a commute, telehealth may be available. PHP treatment costs can vary but are often covered by most insurance. The program duration can vary to meet your specific needs and require you to meet for a minimum of 20 hours a week for an average of 90 days. PHP Treatment services often include relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group counseling, and other behavioral therapy interventions.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
When removing addictive substances from your body under the care of licensed medical professionals, the process is called medically assisted detox. Once you've become physically dependent on substances like alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines, quitting can be uncomfortable or even dangerous. To minimize risks to your health and overall discomfort, a team of medical professionals monitors you 24/7 and provides medications if necessary (like Suboxone or methadone) to ease potential symptoms of withdrawal.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

When you participate in cognitive behavioral therapy in Indiana, you'll learn to recognize distorted thinking that has led to substance use. Your therapist will help you establish new patterns of thinking and healthy ways to cope with challenges that don't involve substance use.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational interviewing aims to stimulate the client's personal motivation and commitment to change. Rather than receive advice and warnings from the therapist, the client is given the opportunity to share their concerns and reach their own conclusions.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills include cognitive skills, interpersonal skills, and personal skills that help you manage daily living. Cultivating these skills during rehab in Indiana is an important part of recovery. With these skills, you'll be able to navigate challenges and prevent relapse.

To function properly, your body must have nutritional balance. Addiction throws off this balance by depleting your body of essential nutrients. Nutrition therapy aims to restore this balance by providing a healthy diet that supports healing and long term sobriety.

These housing people are the best! Shout out to Fabian and Sheila and many thanks for getting me into my new house. I appreciate all that you all did for me. God bless you both. And to the people on here complaining about what did or did not happen for them... You have to realize these people have guidelines they have to follow and with a little patience and ingenuity on your part is helpful. If you'll work with them they'll do everything they can for you but you have to put in some time and effort if you want results. I've been with these people for years and yes there's gonna be some disappointments but for the most part they have helped me. Just remember be patient and kind. It goes a long way when you're in need of their help. They have feelings too.🕊️

I have only received excellent care from the providers at Eskanazi, but have only had negative experiences with billing. They've been largely unhelpful and I've had to rely on my insurance's customer support to figure out why things went wrong. For example I received a bill where the claim was submitted from their Cincinnati location and had the wrong billing code on it. I originally contacted billing at Eskanazi, and was basically told it's my problem to figure out. My insurance figured out what was wrong and basically gave me a script to tell Eskanazi what was wrong. If you get Diana P as your billing agent, don't expect much help.

I was a patient here some time ago. You have to arrive no later than 8am in order to be registered for the first time. The staff was ok, but they repeatedly disregarded my requests to stop spamming my phone. Whenever I did not have an appointment scheduled yet they'd become like telemarketers and call a lot. Requests are ignored and one caller sounded kind of sad, which tells me possibly staff are forced to do this by higher ups. So I stopped going and returned to my faith 6 months ago and I can say I'm nearly healed of BPD. These days as society moves away from God and destroys itself, the power of God to heal trauma and emotional distress is severely underrated. I encourage all those who are suffering to seek Jesus first and foremost. Have a blessed day.

Completed online form for new patient appointment for my daughter..4 days later nothing. Called and was told new patients have to present via the walk in assessment service...that would be good information to have on the website instead of an appt request form that you ignore anyways. Then, I drive down there to the walk in during the hours they told me and it is closed...no explanation....apparently they were closed all week and the person I spoke to was incapable of telling me this. Zero mental health help a,vailable ..zero compassion..called crisis number and recorded message asking for "access code" ...seriously? If weren't stressed before you started...you sure will be when you get done. Unacceptable to be asked by a receptionist "what my daughters IQ is"

They have helped my sister in many ways. The best way, in my opinion, was with her medications they worked with her until they got her on the correct medication that fit her! It was much needed and very appreciated! Thank you Eskenazi mental health facility!!! My family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts! I pray other mental health patients can get the same care that my sister has/does.
