About Exodus House – 5th Street Southeast
The Exodus House – 5th Street Southeast is located in Hickory, North Carolina. This facility is part of a faith-based Catawba County United Way Agency that provides housing and programs for homeless individuals recovering from addiction or recently released from prison.
Former residents have appreciated being able to have a faith-based rehabilitation experience. They say Exodus helps you get back on your feet and is a good place to send a loved one for recovery.
Applying for the Exodus Program
Applicants must divulge mental and medical health diagnoses and submit to drug screening. Those meeting admission requirements are accepted regardless of their ability to pay. In some cases, applicants may be referred to an outpatient substance abuse treatment program.
Two-Tiered Residential Program
Entry into the program begins with the Day Program for two to four weeks with several meetings per day, Monday through Friday. After completion of the Day Program, clients enter the Exodus Works Vocational Training Program.
The Vocational Program is where residents volunteer in different Exodus job services such as landscaping, commercial and residential moving, cleaning services, miscellaneous pickup and delivery and miscellaneous jobs. This volunteer work is completed in exchange for housing, utilities, Wi-Fi, laundry, transportation, case management, medical care, food, clothing, recovery programs and vocational training. Individuals with disabilities will be able to volunteer according to their abilities.
Programs to Support Your Recovery
Residents can participate in 12 Step groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. Other options include relapse prevention, peer support groups and Ex-Offenders Anonymous. Life skills groups are also available that cover adult education, parenting, finances and safe sex practices.
Medically assisted recovery is accessible by referral from a detox program, outpatient program, jail, or prison if documentation is provided. Faith based programs are available with worship services and Bible study groups. Residents have opportunities for recreation to find new leisure skills and to develop individual gifts and talents. The length of stay depends on the individual, but one year is encouraged.
Recovery in Hickory
Hickory is the home of Bakers Mountain Park which offers a six-mile hiking trail that passes over creeks, through a chestnut oak forest, and to a mountaintop observation deck. You may also enjoy the Hickory Trail, which is 10 miles long and includes diverse scenery and interesting stopping points along the way. These nature areas can provide great settings for healthy exercise or quiet contemplation as you navigate your recovery journey.
Addiction Treatments
Treatments
The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.
There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.
A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.
Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.
Programs

Clinical Services
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
