I made an appointment to establish care with a primary care physician at M Health Fairview Highland Park. I saw Dr Yusuf Mohamed and shared my health concerns. I also told him that I had already had a Medicare Wellness Visit for the year. He said he wanted to see me again and scheduled an appointment. But when I went to check in online for the visit, I found that it was scheduled as another Wellness Visit which Medicare won’t cover. I called scheduling and explained that I could not afford a visit not covered by Medicare. The woman I spoke to told me I could just call the visit something else and keep the appointment. I can’t decide or input what kind of visit I am to have. But she did not understand so I cancelled the appointment and sent an e-visit to Dr. Mohamed. I never received a response. So I am stuck having to find a different primary care doctor. I am very disappointed with my experience with Dr. Mohamed and M Health Fairview Highland Park. Although the in-person staff were very friendly, the scheduler I spoke with and the total lack of response for my email visit from my doctor or his care team tells me that this is a very unprofessional clinic that doesn’t care about their patients. I would strongly discourage people from using this clinic for healthcare.

Jennifer bottom is great. But unfortunately the nurse care team line is absolutely the most disgusting people ive spoke with. No respect for the fact this is my health. When people call that line its to explain a problem or concern and for them to listen and here them out not someone on the other line upset they have to listen to me explain some misshap. Will not being coming back here unfortunately cause clearly my heathly concerns dont concern them.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. Kappelman was extremely disappointing and concerning. While she presents herself as caring and competent, her actions suggest otherwise. She consistently dismissed my symptoms, often speaking over me rather than listening. Any attempts to advocate for myself or ask clarifying questions were met with defensiveness, condescension, or outright blame, a pattern that felt emotionally manipulative and gaslighting. Rather than exploring the underlying causes of my medical issues, Dr. Kappelman frequently redirected responsibility back onto me, implying that my concerns were exaggerated or psychosomatic. This approach not only delayed meaningful care but left me feeling unheard and invalidated. When she was uncertain or possibly wrong, she deflected rather than acknowledged the limitations of her approach, something no patient should ever experience from a trusted provider. Patients deserve providers who are transparent, collaborative, and genuinely invested in their well-being. In my experience, Dr. Kappelman failed to meet even the basic standards of patient-centered care. I would not recommend her to anyone seeking a compassionate, competent provider.

Absolutely awful, I was with in 15 late due to road closures and was refused service. This was a very important appointment to me and I could not take off more work to reschedule. The staff did not care or do anything to assist me. I was willing to wait but was still refused because the provider was running late. I will NEVER come to this location again and will strongly suggest to friends and family to do the same

Stopped by the lab yesterday to get some labs done and the lab technician was so nice and helpful! I wish I had caught her name to giver a shoutout. I only lowered a star because last week when I stopped in the two women at the front desk were oddly not very nice.

Diane K. Samson was rude and insensitive. I hope I never have another need for urgent care because she won't listen to you. If she had looked at my history I've always needed 10 days of an antibiotic. She would only prescribe 7 days. I will refuse to be seen by her.

Worst experience. If you are diabetic seek care elsewhere. The provider I was setup with wouldn't write prescriptions because I am on a pump. Their endocrinology department is booked out 3 to 6 months in advance. The nurse I spoke to had no solutions to getting a prescription for insulin other than "writing one for daily injections". Unclear if it is a licensing issue or what exactly. Their recommendation was to go to the Emergency for a prescription. Completely useless and unprofessional. I hope these type of people don't have and never have kids. Zero empathy. You have a responsibility to do what is ethical when you provide medical care. It is unethical to have no solution for a person trying to seek care for a prescription they are medically dependent on.

Rudest front desk people I’ve ever encountered. Just here for a scheduled appointment, no need to be weird about it.

Went in to get checked out for strep throat. I told the doctor I have IDB and a low appetite so I can’t take anything that messes with my stomach. He proceeds to prescribe me something that will make it so I have to have something in my stomach 3 times a day for the next 10 days! I know they have z packs that only take 5. What are we doing here guys???
