About Hawthorn Childrens Psychiatric Hospital

Hawthorn Children’s Psychiatric Hospital, located in St. Louis, Missouri, is a state-operated clinic that dedicates itself to giving children and adolescents between ages 6-18 mental health services. While they state that their main focus is addressing severe psychiatric conditions, I also found that they treat co-occurring substance use disorders as well.

Care for Their Youth

They do this in several ways. One way is by offering inpatient acute treatment as a program option. This specific program is designed for young people who’re experiencing severe mental health crises. I like that they’re very child-centered and family-focused and use that approach throughout the entire process.

Within this program, you can find some interesting services, such as comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to help determine the specific mental health challenges that you’re facing. Afterwards, you’ll get an individualized treatment plan that addresses your psychiatric symptoms and any co-occurring substance abuse symptoms. They also have therapeutic interventions like individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy.

Meds and More

If you’re worried about your medications, don’t be. They offer medication management that’ll carefully oversee your medications and put you on the right dosage at the right times so that you don’t have to worry about that and can focus on getting better.

The residential treatment program is a therapeutic community with 24 beds that can give you plenty of help through services such as individualized programming to tailor the intervention to your specific needs, skill development, and multidisciplinary team approaches.

I was a patient from August 9 2023 to June 29 2024 I never went to adolescent I was always in cottage c this place took tuff love to a whole new level the cottage staff would tell you they're preparing you for the real world when they pick on you I was gaslit and manipulated by the cottage staff on a daily basis I managed to get level 3 near the end of my stay (the 2 highest level) and I remember one day a cottage staff was teaching me to play chess at one table in the "day area" there are two tables in the day area about 4 feet apart at the second table there was a specific staff member that would constantly antagonize me throughout my stay I had sneezed and the staff said said from across the room "if your gonna sneeze put your mask on" I reassured her that It was just allergies and that we had just been out in the courtyard and it was summer so my allergies were acting up. She then said "if you knew you had allergies why did you go outside?" I told her that I knew I have had severe allergies since I was a baby and that I take prescribed medication every morning yet it's inevitable because I will always get allergies she continued with the same argument that I shouldn't have gone outside I eventually told her "this isnt a productive conversation and I don't want to argue" she agreed to stop the conversation yet continued talking about it to other staff in the room where everyone could hear i got frustrated and asked her to just drop it she said she wasn't talking to me and continued I asked again and she threatened to give me an OFL ("opportunity for learning") (a write up basically with consequences like restricting courtyard, free recreational therapy time, level drop or written apology letter/assignment) I ended up going to my room and discharged from hawthorn a week later. This is just one example of a day in the life of a patient at hawthorn children's psychiatric hospital

I was a patient here 8 years ago. It was by far the most traumatic experience I've ever had. The workers there didn't actually care for the patients, some even taunting the kids when they were upset. They were always looking for a reason to restrain the kids and put them in "the quiet room" which had a window so all the other kids could see what was going on inside. The food was not great, but that's what you can expect from a state hospital. The "outside time" you had was almost like a prison yard; barbed wire on top of the 10ft fence they had. They advised us to make friends with the other students, and then once you would establish a relationship with said kids, you'd be carefully watched in every. single. setting. The educational class they had was garbage. I was 12 and they were giving me addition and subtraction lesson... And when I told them that I had already learned that in school, they'd become argumentative and demanded you finish what they'd given you otherwise you'd get your yard time taken away. I stayed in the adolescents side for a few weeks before they switched me to a cottage. (I'll admit, the cottages were a lot better than the rest of the facility but it came with catches.) They were a total of maybe 5 workers total that you could tell actually cared about the kids. Most of the workers are abusive either mentally, physically, or emotionally. I'm still recovering over the "treatment" I received here to this day. Reading the other reviews and seeing that nothing has changed over the 8 years of me being there breaks my heart for the hundreds of other kids that had to go through the same thing I did. By far the worst place you can send ANYONE to, let alone children. If you care about your child and their mental wellbeing, PLEASE I'm begging you, don't send them here. They could be permanently emotionally damaged from their stay in this hell hole. I have diagnosed PTSD from this place, I've been in therapy and on medications for years now. I would never recommend this place even to my enemies. This place needs to be shut down.EDIT: I even remember one girl that had gotten restrained clearly. The nurses were laughing at her when they restrained her in her room and sedated her, making jokes about what had just happened. They'd even show the other kids the girl in this state as a warning. It made me sick to my stomach.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Please do not take your kids here. This place needs to be shut down! The workers are abusive and the things they do here are inhumane. I feel so bad for anyone who has ever had to stay here. 💔

I spent around 9 months here when I was 17 in 2011-2012 and I still have nightmares about it. The staff range from ineffective to down right abusive. I was there to get help for my mental health issues, however they treated me as if I had no illness and was simply acting bad. They would tell us being there was not a punishment meanwhile treating us like delinquents being punished. If you have a child who needs help, I beg you, PLEASE do not send them here. It will not help, and may cause more harm. I cannot stress this enough....

When my son needed psychiatric care children's hospital told us hawthorn was our only option due to my insurance. When we first got there we met with a team and my son was evaluated and came up with a plan for therapy. The staff discussed resources for support and plans for when he got discharged. Everything seemed on the up and up but I quickly discovered that these people have no interest in helping children. The therapists will argue and act like children themselves. One of the therapists tried to get me to lie to my child. At one point I called at the designated time to talk to my child, and they wouldn't let me speak to him because he had his hood on inside the building. Another therapist told me your child shouldn't be here it's traumatic for him, you need to take him home and seek care on the outside. When I asked about having him discharged I was told he could only go to another psychiatric facility and my insurance would only cover two weeks at which time he would be discharged and they would report me to dfs for not seeking medical care for him. They said that dfs would then take custody of him and he would just wind up back at their facility. His therapist told him "fake it till you make it." He was held there for 8 agonizing months and they still wouldn't discuss the possibility of releasing him. Then one day out of the blue, suddenly he was well and going to be released. I learned from one of the staff that they hold onto their patients until they have another child to take their place. They put three meals in front of him and shoved pills down his throat. It wasn't a positive experience for any of us. Seek other options.
