About Hickory Trail Hospital

Hickory Trail Hospital provides behavioral health treatment for children, adolescents, adults and seniors. They have both day and residential treatment. Their chemical dependency program follows the 12-step model and includes medication management and detox.

What I like about this facility is that you get a no-cost clinical evaluation and plan of action before you are admitted. Most rehab facilities provide this after you enroll. Your action plan may include inpatient, partial hospitalization, or intensive outpatient treatment.

Hickory Trail Hospital focuses on long-term recovery and so their treatment plans include everything from inpatient detox to discharge planning. They offer education on life skills and seeking safety. Their recreational therapy includes sports, yoga, pet, art and gardening.

You will get daily meetings with a psychiatric staff member and medications if needed. Social support including AA and NA as well as family support are available.

Hickory Trail Hospital accepts most major private and government-issued insurance plans. They also have payment options and will assist patients with verifying and filing for insurance benefits.

I attended my CPI renewal class at Hickory Trail Hospital yesterday and was coordinated by Jason P. He was exceptional, patient, took his time to explain the subjects and demonstrated the training with me. He does have a deep knowledge of the course. Jason is also, always, very helpful whenever he is the Lead Tech/Milieu manager in the Intake Department, from prompt review of the bedboard many times during the shift to helping the techs on the units. He is a true gift to the Hickory Trail Hospital.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab programs are geared toward clients in early recovery. They also provide intensive support for clients in crisis and those at an increased relapse risk. Clients receive housing and meals while in inpatient care, allowing them to focus solely on their recovery. Most programs prioritize addiction counseling but may draw on various psychotherapeutic modalities, including CBT, DBT, RBT, trauma therapy, and motivational interviewing. Life skills training and holistic therapies are also common in inpatient care.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers intensive addiction treatment while allowing you to return home each day. It can serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a step-down option. Depending on your needs, PHP treatment typically averages 90 days with a weekly requirement of 6-8 hours a day. PHP treatment offers a variety of therapeutic interventions such as individual counseling, group therapy, and psychoeducation. Oftentimes PHP treatment can be fully covered by insurance.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Ridding the body of harmful, addictive substances, also known as detoxification, is usually the first phase of recovery. Those going through medically assisted detox can be administered medications by a team of medical professionals who are on-site 24/7 to provide different types of therapies that help mitigate withdrawal symptoms.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

The goal of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in Texas is to change thought patterns, which leads to changes in behavior. Specific techniques during CBT can include self talk, SMART goals, journaling, and positive activities.

Treatment that takes a dialectical behavior therapy approach focuses on four strategies. Distress tolerance will help you accept and tolerate intense emotions. Emotional regulation will teach you to manage those emotions. Mindfulness will keep you in the present moment instead of regret or worry. Interpersonal effectiveness will teach you to manage your relationships.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

The right life skills training will help you build the skills you need for recovery. You'll learn how to solve problems, improve your social life, enhance your mental health, and make good decisions. This is a key component of drug rehab programs in Texas.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

As I struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, I was searching for inpatient treatment and I reached out to hickory trail. I called them from home and explained my situation and that it was very nearly a crisis state. They encouraged me to come to their location immediately and that I would be processed and receive the care that I needed. Upon arriving I was told by a lady through the speakerphone at the door to go back to my car and wait and they would reach out to me. Several hours later no one had reached out to me so I left. Here at 4:00 p.m. The next day no one has still reached out to me. So, after I left I stopped at a gas station and began to read some of the reviews and I was absolutely shocked by what I found. The reviews that I read and the experience that I had matched perfectly and it caused me to reach out to the intake coordinator on May 30th of 2025. Her name is Heather. When I explained my situation to her, she apologized and let me know that that was not acceptable. I explained to her that their brand was being extremely damaged by the way that they treated their patients and in specific how they handled me as a potential new patient. Then she mentioned that she had been there for 3 years and it immediately became clear to me that she is a part of the problem and not a part of the solution. She immediately became defensive and started trying to defend the actions of the intake team and the fact that they had encouraged me to come then put me on hold in the parking lot and ultimately kicked me to the curb. So as I finish this review, I would like to make it abundantly clear that healthcare professionals and social workers that I have spoken to today have warned me to never cross the threshold of this facility. It is my absolute belief that by entering this facility you are putting your very life at risk and based on my conversation with Heather the intake manager, it wouldn't really matter if that were the case. It's not about the patient care. That is abundantly clear for anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear. So please spare yourself and your loved ones the heartacheand the danger of even reaching out to this organization. They have proven to me that they do not care and once you are in the door, if you do get in the door, the situation will only get worse. There are too many other high quality facilities in this area to risk your well-being at this one. Please say a prayer for those who are trapped inside this facility And say an additional one that the state of Texas will step in and shut them down permanently. My interaction with Heather confirmed every suspicion and fear that I had about the place and more than amplified every negative review that you see here.

Better than Dallas Behavioral! Let's just say the staff doesn't sleep at night here and the social workers actually call you! You can also request to talk to the social worker and it'll happen. Sometimes I would call and 50/50 they will answer or not but that was the least of worries! they might be busy or doing shift change.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
So glad to hear this terrific feedback! Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review. Take care.

ZERO stars if I could!! Can't get hold of anyone to discuss matters concerning a family member. Can't leave a voicemail because they simply don't "have it" here. Not interested in helping patients. They are a 7-10 day only program which was made very clear today! Piece of advice- involve family members and obtain current medical records from instead of prescribing meds blindly! Mental health is NOT a one size fits all! Do better for the sake of your patients, their family members, and society as a whole!

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us with your concerns. We take your comments very seriously and would like to learn more about your family member’s concerns. Due to federal patient privacy laws, we can only discuss care with a patient or guardian; however, we encourage your family member to reach out to us directly by visiting https://www.hickorytrail.com/contact-us/. In 2018, I had admitted myself after lack of sleep due to drug use. After a few days, I tried to sign an AMA to have myself released as I had started sleeping again. At that time, I was served a court order signed by a judge to keep me there. After three weeks of being held imprisoned by the facility, I was finally released. When going over my medical records, I discovered they had documented that I was pregnant, self-harming, and attempting vehicular homicide. They also diagnosed me schizophrenic and heavily medicated me with medications that aren’t even approved for pregnant women. NONE of these were true. I was NOT pregnant. I was NOT self-harming, and I definetly was not schizophrenic or attempting to harm anyone with my vehicle. I still hold trauma due to being unlawfully locked into this facility as does my family who desperately tried to get me out. I have been scared to seek mental health treatment since as I believe this was a case of medical insurance fraud. I was young and did not acknowledge that I had a liable lawsuit at the time. The statute of limitations has since passed unfortunately or I would absolutely be suing this place. Please please please do not send your loved ones here.

My son was in inpatient therapy at Hickory Trails. After he was released he transitioned to out patient treatment in the Branches program. This program has been a very positive experience for him. Throughout his illness it has been difficult for him to connect and participate in therapy. He looks forward to going to Branches everyday and is slowly becoming more comfortable in communicating and interacting with people. He has been ill for approximately 9 years. This is the first time he has connected in any program. True progress in his illness is happening due to the Branches program. This program has been a lifesaver for him, as well as, our family. I would recommend this program to any adult suffering from a mental health illness. He is learning necessary lifeskills, and how to manage every aspect of his illness. The staff is very caring. They work diligently with the participants in the program, and treat each individual with dignity.
