About A Helping Hand of Wilmington

A Helping Hand of Wilmington is an outpatient counseling center on Wrightsville Avenue in Wilmington, North Carolina. The counselors assist clients with substance use and co occurring mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. You can use your private insurance or Medicaid. If you’re uninsured, the group has access to state funding that may help pay for your counseling.

Intensive Outpatient Program for Substance Use Disorder in Wilmington

Only five miles from beautiful Wrightsville Beach, you can attend the IOP. An IOP is an outpatient program that leaves you time for work, school, and self care, like walking on the beach. The IOP meets three times each week for sessions that includes group therapy and addiction education.

You’ll learn to rewire your brain to reduce substance cravings, improve your emotional intelligence, and restore your self esteem and self respect. You’ll identify and address mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Supportive Services for Whole Health Treatment

One of the things I like about this clinic is the supportive services. They have a care manager who can help connect you to local resources to assist with housing, food, and other essential needs.

If you have legal issues, they can deal with probation, CPS, TASC, and DWI assessors to notify them of your attendance. If you need psychiatric medications or medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder, they can communicate with your prescriber or give you a referral.

I have never had positive experiences with therapy until I started a helping hand and starting working with Khristine. Not only does she give me her total attention and focus she has allowed me to do our sessions over the phone and has always worked with my schedule. She has gone over and beyond to make me feel heard and comfortable. The first therapist I’ve ever been to that I feel actually cares. I look forward to our sessions and I would highly recommend.

Accepted Insurance

A Helping Hand of Wilmington works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer a complete continuum of care for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery and are predicated on the idea that addiction disease is a chronic condition prone to relapse and warranting continuing care. Clients collaborate with their care team and case manager to access the specific rehab aftercare services they need to promote their sustained sobriety. Peer coaching, relapse prevention services, career counseling, and 12 step program induction are common in these programs.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services can provide customized interventions tailored to the needs of the individual and family. An intervention specialist can design and conduct a drug intervention in North Carolina that encourages the individual to enter treatment in a non-coercive manner. The specialist will meet with the family to plan the intervention, then provide expert insights to guide the process and appropriate follow-up care.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

A medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive drugs and alcohol from your body. A team of licensed medical professionals will look after you 24/7 to monitor your health, help minimize discomfort, and provide medications if necessary to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically the first step in your recovery and may take around 5-7 days, although length will depend on your individual needs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

You usually develop a strong bond with your therapist during individual therapy sessions. This helps you explore the underlying causes of your substance use in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. Therapists help you develop effective coping strategies you can use in the community and improve your self awareness so you understand your addiction triggers.

If you're struggling with insecurity about your ability to make changes in your life, motivational interviewing in North Carolina could be a good solution. This type of therapy offers support and empowerment to help you explore your options and decide how to move forward with positive changes.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Routine tasks are difficult for someone experiencing addiction. Daily skills deteriorate, which makes it harder to achieve recovery. That's why drug rehab programs in North Carolina reteach basic life skills. This gives you the tools you need to manage daily life without returning to substance use.

I wasn't made to go to IOP at Helping Hand, but I knew myself well enough that I needed extended care after rehab. I couldn't be happier with it. Steph is no-nonsense but very caring. She kept the group dynamic at a great level, lots of good information and feedback all around. She definitely helped me with my addiction, my own perspective on life, and my marriage as well. Sometimes you just have to trust the professionals. I finally did and it made a world of difference.

Trusting the process can be a big step, and we’re so happy that it made a world of difference for you. We wish you continued growth and healing on your journey!

I cannot speak highly enough of the Helping Hand of Wilmington! This organization truly lives up to its name, providing invaluable support when it's needed most. During a challenging time, I found myself in need of assistance, and from my very first interaction, I was met with understanding and genuine care. A huge part of my incredibly positive experience was thanks to Steph. She is an absolute gem! I came to AHHW because I originally couldn't complete treatment at WTC because of migraines. I choose to come here and have been so blessed. Even after completing inside WTC I continued to come to the group classes and one on one counseling with Steph Struges because I wanted to be there. Steph has lived through what we're all struggling with and is brilliant. The program is written by Steph and she has a way of being able to connect personally to every type of person that needs help with addiction or trauma. Steph is loving and will be tough when you need it but in a way that is pallitable. Seriously I have been part of group at A helping hand of Wilmington for a year and the group provides a feeling of welcome and community to people of all walks of life. I have been in recovery before and was sober for 10 years before losing my way again. Everyone who struggles with addiction and makes a commitment to change has certain needs and lessons to learn. A helping hand of Wilmington provides a fun place to be during some of the hardest times in a person's life. People are here because they want to help because they know what you're going through and more importantly how to get you back to a fulfilling life.

Response from the owner

If you are ready to do the work, Deborah can help you.

I have been seeing the AMAZING Deborah at A Helping Hand and after many attempts to find "my person" in a therapist I love her and would be devastated if she went anywhere! She is helpful in so many ways, and is available or understanding when schedules conflict. She never makes me feel unwanted or like she isn't available. She is a saving grace! The whole office and everyone has been helpful, I would strongly recommend them to anyone even considering therapy. Its like a new best friend! <3

Response from the owner
Thank you so much for your heartfelt review! We’re so glad to hear that Deborah has been such a positive influence on your journey. It’s truly rewarding to know that you feel supported and valued, both by her and the entire team. Your words mean the world to us, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your healing process. We look forward to continuing to support you—you're always welcome here! 💙
