About Jersey Shore University Medical Center Behavioral Health

The Jersey Shore University Medical Center has a variety of hospitals and clinics around New Jersey, including the Behavioral Health Center in Neptune. This clinic provides psychiatric assessments, mental health and substance use treatment and medication assisted treatment (MAT) for adults.

The Jersey Shore University Medical Center is part of Hackensack Meridian Health. They accept a wide range of insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare.

Outpatient Treatment for Addiction and Mental Health

The Jersey Shore UMC provides mental health care and addiction treatment through an intensive outpatient program (IOP) as well as general outpatient care.

MAT services are available for those struggling with opioid or alcohol addiction. The Center also provides mental health medication when it’s appropriate and can provide integrated care for co occurring disorders.

The IOP provides individual and group counseling several times a week. In these sessions, you’ll learn recovery skills and strategies for relapse prevention and receive social support and family education.

The general outpatient program is for those with less severe substance use. The goal of the program is to provide substance use education and prevent more severe substance use disorder.

Various Group Treatment Programs in Neptune

I like that there are several group programs available. There’s a dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) group that helps you manage your emotions and reduce stress. There’s also a trauma focused group that can help you address traumatic experiences that might be affecting substance use, and there’s a group focused on relapse prevention.

I noticed they also offer a resource program for intoxicated drivers, which can provide court ordered education as well as additional support to help you get back on your feet after a DUI conviction.

My father was admitted to the hospital emergency room and then into surgery. His clothing, jewelry and watch which were on him in the emergency room and was seen on him before his surgery went missing. These items were stolen off of him. My father passed away one week after the surgery, and now 7 months later, the hospital has refused to reach out about compensation for these items.Make sure you take all of your personal items off and leave them at home or with your loved one s. It seems there are many thieves that work in the hospital since I was told that this is more normal that not.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Absolute amateurs.

It is embarrassing that these hacks get to bill insurance like a "real" healthcare provider. Stay home. My doctors (plural) told me to discontinue these services because they were harming my recovery process. Thankfully I took that advice.

The staff is very unhelpful and short tempered. They are all very rude, both on the phone and in person. My counselor didn’t bother to know my backstory, or how was I actually doing.

I was brought to the Emergency Department at Jersey Shore University Medical Center on Memorial Day because I was experiencing nausea and a headache followed with extreme dizziness, and let me tell you, my experience here at JSUMC was absolutely PHENOMENAL! The doctors and nurses are super kind and knowledgeable. I don’t remember none of their names but everyone working at Jersey Shore is very friendly. Forgot to mention, the environment of the hospital is very cool and cozy! Now I see why Jersey Shore is ranked one of the top hospitals for adults and children in the entire nation, one of the best hospitals I’ve ever been with such good people!

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for telling us about your great ED experience over the holiday weekend. We’re so happy you chose to travel to JSUMC, and wish you the best as you recover!

My son recently visited the emergency department here. He dorms in N.J. and could only get a friend to accompany him. The staff were aware that he was in pain and dealt with that first. They thoroughly investigated his symptoms even if they were sure they knew his diagnosis. Time spent there really wasn't that long at all compared to NYC hospitals. I was happy to have a happy, healthy, pain free son come home.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are happy to hear your son had such a positive and warm experience with all of our team members at JSUMC. Thank you for sharing, we wish him the best during his healing journey.

Giving a HUGE THANK YOU to Nurse Domineek. She prepped me on the Surgical Prep unit at JSUMC. She was kind, discreet (a huge plus) showed respect, well groomed, well versed with clinical information provided and very supportive when I displayed fear or apprehension. She even managed to give me an injection using a technique that completely made me NOT feel the injection! And all of this at 6am in the morning, lol. She truly made it more relaxing experience. She made me feel that I was in a safe and caring environment.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for sharing this extraordinary story with us, Domineek is such a dedicated and caring nurse. Our team is committed to providing the best healthcare experience, and we appreciate your acknowledgement of their dedication. We wish you all the best in your healing journey!!

My child left worse than when she entered. Doctors were condescending and lazy. Actually, that’s generous. Incompetent is probably more accurate. Tried to tell me I didn’t understand how diapers worked, at one point. Sent us home prematurely after my child’s conditioned worsened. Ended up driving out to CHOP. Good place to overdose, from what I hear. Otherwise stay away.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We would appreciate an opportunity to hear more about your experience during your child's care. Please contact the Office of Patient Experience at 732-776-4447 or through email at opejsumc@hmhn.org to speak with an advocate who can address these concerns.

We could not be more thankful for the care my father received during and after his complex surgery. Dr. Lelkes and his team were able to properly diagnose, develop, and execute a complicated care plan. The team of nurses including Barbara Johnson RN & Laura RN did an amazing job to recover my father from surgery, address his pain management, and ease our anxiety by keeping us informed. They truly helped to decrease our stress with their clinical knowledge and compassionate demeanor. Sincere appreciation to receive such high level care close to home.

Literally a terrible experience. Came at noon into the *emergency room* and didn’t get seen until 2:15. Dr ordered x-rays and i didn’t get those done until 3:50. All the workers were just laughing and sitting around all day. I was sobbing in pain, no one helped. Still sitting here, not seen, no idea what’s wrong

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Please accept our apology for this experience in our Emergency Department. We would appreciate an opportunity to discuss this with you. Please contact the Office of Patient Experience at 732-776-4447 or through email at opejsumc@hmhn.org to speak with an advocate who can address these concerns.

Michele in Surgery Recovery (4th floor) was an amazing woman. She made sure my Mom was comfortable and happy after her surgery. Michele has such a great personality. My mom can be VERY difficult and trust me, if she was happy after the surgery, that says A LOT! Thank you Michele. You made a stressful situation pleasant.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
This is wonderful to hear that your Mom received such wonderful care on the 4th floor, especially with Michlele! Thank you for sharing and we hope Mom is having a quick recovery!
