Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

This organization should be investigated and shut down. I was required by the state of North Carolina to take DWI classes in order to reinstate my license. Unfortunately, this organization operates like a state-sanctioned scam with no accountability, oversight, or concern for the people it's supposed to serve. What I experienced was an appalling waste of public and personal funds. Of the ten “classes” I attended via Zoom, not a single one met the required duration or offered meaningful instruction. Two of the sessions were “free periods” — the instructor showed up 10–15 minutes late, told us we’d get credit anyway, and left. Most other sessions lasted well under the advertised 1–2 hours. The longest class I attended was about 45 minutes, and it had nothing to do with substance abuse education. Instead, participants just asked questions about their court cases and DMV forms. The instructors, who were clearly disinterested, just read vaguely from outdated literature. They made no effort to engage the class or provide actual education. A workbook was mentioned repeatedly — but never once distributed to any students. Now, I didn’t complain initially. I figured the real punishment was the cost, and at least they weren’t wasting much of my time. But then came the final blow: After completing the class and receiving a certificate of completion, I was told they would send the necessary forms to the DMV on my behalf. Weeks later, I discovered they never submitted my paperwork because of an issue with my 508 form — something they never informed me of until I followed up myself. The situation gets worse. Before enrolling, I had asked if I could complete my required substance abuse evaluation through my local Virginia provider (since I’m based in VA). Their receptionist said that was perfectly fine, so I paid $168 for the evaluation and submitted it. Only after completing all the classes did they tell me the DMV wouldn’t accept an out-of-state evaluation. So now they demanded an additional $100 to do their own evaluation. And here’s the kicker: they never even conducted one. No interview. No questionnaire. They just took the money and submitted paperwork — which, to me, constitutes outright fraud. In total, I paid nearly $840 for a program that failed to deliver what it promised, offered almost no educational value, and engaged in deceptive and potentially unlawful practices. This isn’t just unethical — it’s harmful. These classes are mandatory for people trying to regain the right to drive and work again. Many participants are low-income, and there is no real choice or competition in providers. That’s a monopoly, and a predatory one at that. Lastly, I know many people reading this may assume anyone convicted of a DWI deserves what they get. But not all situations are the same. I blew two 0.0s and a final 0.01 BAC. Because I was under 21, I was still charged. I wasn’t intoxicated — but I was still forced into this system. If anyone from NC DHHS, DOGE, or the Attorney General’s office is reading this: Please investigate. This organization is making hundreds of thousands of dollars through government-mandated programs with zero oversight, accountability, or value. People deserve better. Update* I appreciate that you’ve corrected the spelling of my name (it’s not “Hail”), but I do not appreciate the unprofessional response implying I “remember not to drink and drive.” I did NOT drive under the influence — I passed all field sobriety tests and blew two 0.0s, with a final 0.01 likely caused by mouthwash or calibration error. Your comment is condescending and inaccurate. I also noticed a sudden wave of five-star reviews posted right after mine, which raises questions. For the record, I’ve already submitted formal complaints to NCDHHS, DHSR, the Attorney General’s Office, NCSAPPB, and the DMV Hearings Office. Do not contact me. Fix your program.
