About Mindfully Therapy & Psychiatry — Strongsville

Mindfully, formerly known as Nancy Lowrie and Associates, is located in Strongsville, Ohio. They’ve provided mental health counseling and help with chemical dependency or substance use disorder, SUD for Northeastern Ohio residents for more than 25 years.

Their mental health for children and teens program focuses on learning common social skills, developing strategies to improve relationships, anger management and coping with anxiety or depression, ADHD and or mood disorders.

They can also help you with eating disorders or self harm issues, controlling negative impulses, overcoming SUD, handling gender identity issues and more.

They also have a specialized dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for teens program. DBT can help battle severe depression, substance misuse, suicidal thoughts and or self harming behaviors.

With the DBT program you’ll have weekly therapy sessions and skills training and phone sessions with your clinician if needed. For a less intensive or less structured form of DBT they have a DBT informed counseling program that might work for you.

They also have a radically open DBT or RO DBT program here. It’s for people who experience over control in their lives like excessive self control and rigidity or a high level of social inhibition that might be debilitating.

Overcontrolling personality types can tend to have chronic depression, anorexia and poor personal relationships due to isolation and inability to be vulnerable around others.

You can also get psychiatric services here as well as help with psychiatric medications or medication management. Your mental health therapist can help with profound mood swings, extreme and ongoing anxiety or sadness, SUD or suicidal thoughts.

If needed the psychiatric team might prescribe medication along with your therapy sessions. They can come up with a personalized medication plan with you. They’ll monitor your response and check dosage so that you’re safely getting the help you need.

What I like about this treatment center is that they use a few different strategies for the same types of problems. What works for one might not work for others so that brings a bigger potential for success.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

employee-assistance iconEmployee Assistance Program

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention Services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need. The Intervention Alternatives is a 5 week group for those who care about someone with problematic or addictive behaviors.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Ohio provides comprehensive treatment to address the physical and psychological needs of those struggling with substance use disorders. This may involve inpatient and/or outpatient care.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Hypnotherapy (aka guided hypnosis) can be used as a therapeutic modality to treat substance use, especially in terms of quitting smoking cigarettes (nicotine). Clinical hypnotherapists help clients turn their attention inward, accessing unconscious or subconscious material, and then make suggestions that are healthier for the individual. The process can help clients make deep, positive, and lasting changes, including ceasing addictive habits.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Waste of time and bad experience with Marlena. Was really hoping for a good outcome to family therapy. I tried to discuss starting with individual but she wanted to jump into more group, without understanding any of our history. Marlena may have mentioned or warned of being a " reporter" and used tactics of calling CPS on my child's behavior to my child and seemed to have issues with my frustration about it ( as I want my kids to feel safer and trusting the first time in counseling). There is nothing out of the ordinary about our situations we were looking for better mental health in our house. She basically bailed on me without fair explanation, and never followed through with other referrals to continue as she said she would. I did like her personally and thought she had a fun personality to work with us but felt she wasn't professional or aggressive in doing her job to her best.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for sharing your experience. We're truly sorry to hear that things didn't go as you hoped in your time with Marlena. It sounds like you were seeking support for your family during a vulnerable time, and we regret that your experience left you feeling unsupported.

At our practice, we have over 40 counselors in the Strongsville /Greater Cleveland area, with a wide range of specialties and approaches, and we understand that finding the right therapeutic fit is incredibly important. Don't waste your time here there therapist are not educated one canceled me because she claims that I wasn't a "good fit" then tell me because the therapist don't believe me when I needed help I tried to reach out for help threw them and they turned me away has nothing to do with insurance I don't know why they replied saying crap about insurance these people are a joke don't waste your time with these uneducated people

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are sorry for your experience. Unfortunately we have no control over the insurance companies - every coverage plan is different in what they will and won't cover, and the level of the therapist's licensure. Our intake admin team can run your insurance information and give you the exact services and fee information that your insurance will cover before your session. The therapist would not have this information available, but our admin staff will and would be happy to help.

I had a really positive experience during the anger management class on 4/30 & 5/1. The person leading the class was very knowledgeable and made me feel like it was a safe space to open up about the issues that lead me to needing the class. I wish I knew how much the class would help me so I could have taken it sooner.

I had Crystal as a counselor therapist and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. I felt like she shamed me and judged my lifestyle when I’m supposed to be there for help. She kept looking at her phone several times during our sessions. It seemed like either she wasn’t paying attention or didn’t care. I switched to Cecilia. I was not judgmental but I got the feeling that I don’t need to come back if I’m planning on moving out of state. I thought that was something for me to decide.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
I'm sorry for your poor experience. Your original counselor is no longer with us. We hope that the new counselor met your needs and was able to help.
