About Northern Lakes Community Mental Health

Northern Lakes Community Mental Health is a unique treatment center for mental health and behavioral health in Traverse City, Michigan. What makes them unique is that they’re part of a public program, so the services they provide and who’s eligible for those services are very specific.

This facility is part of a specific public program in Michigan called the Northern Michigan Regional Entity, which provides mental health care for people who receive Medicaid. This is a prepaid health plan in Michigan which lets this facility and select other locations provide services to eligible recipients in Grand Traverse County and five other counties in Northern Michigan. Basically what this means is that you can only get treatment here if you qualify for the program, but if you do then you receive services for little or no cost.

This clinic is limited in what they can treat because of the specialized program. They can treat co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse, so you can get treatment for a dual diagnosis here if you qualify. They can’t provide treatment for addiction as a standalone condition, though. So if that’s what you need, you can contact the Northern Michigan Regional Entity and they’ll connect you to a facility that’s right for you.

The treatment at this facility takes a person centered approach. Your care team will work with you to find out what you need for recovery and create an individualized treatment plan that addresses both your addiction and your mental health.

Some previous clients have expressed frustration with poor communication and limited services. However, others say their treatment here has been an excellent help.

Called looking to get in as a new patient and after a 15 minute phone call I was denied services because I wasn t in crisis and they didn t feel what I was going through considered an emergency. Good to know we have this wonderful clinic telling us what we re going through isn t serious enough to be seen. I was fortunate enough to get into another clinic that s actually taking my mental health seriously.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

There's so much wrong here I don't have room on a review to explain it all. Eventually I will put it all in a blog which will be on my link tree. The thing that hurt me the most, though, was for them to send a termination letter which contains the absolutely false and libelous accusation of non-participation. This, after 5 years of extensively documented engagement, hard work and finally starting to make some progress toward recovery. To think that my psychiatrist, who I'd worked with for many years, would not only allow such an outrageous, hurtful lie to be sent to me and to be placed in my medical record but also to double down on it a week later when I requested it be corrected really blows my mind and made me realize they do not truly believe in recovery here. I believe that the unnecessary additions to this letter, which contain numerous deliberate lies, egregious clinical oversights, bogus justifications and outright rights violations is punishment for my continuously asserting my rights for accommodation around annual paperwork. And I would hardly call refusing to fill out a form for a VOLUNTARY financial program "refusing to participate in treatment activities." That's a real stretch, but it's the ONLY thing I outright refused as is my right to do. Despite my request for a facilitation of discharge to primary care, they instead abandoned my care effective immediately, ignoring the 30 days stated in the letter. In more than 2 weeks, there's been no contact to assess and update, no medication provided, no contact to my primary care, basically no facilitation of continuity of care what so ever... just a canceling of my next appointment followed by a termination letter based on demonstrably false reasons. It's an egregious failure of standards of care and professionalism, but most of all it has caused me extreme distress, significant emotional harm and set back my recovery at a critical time in my mental well-being. I sent an appeal and they wanted to talk to me about it several days AFTER my services would already be terminated which says to me they are not taking this situation seriously and the interview is simply a formaltity to check a box before refusing me. But even a successful appeal would not clear my name or medical record of thse outrageous and hurtul lies about me. I liked the comment someone else left here wondering if they see bullying recipients as some kind of job security. Maybe they do because they sure don't believe in celebrating successes let alone helping people to recover. It honestly shocks me how quickly and ferouciously they turned on me right after I felt safe and good about my progress. Bullying is the only thing that can explain it. I would never trust these people again.

This place sucks for trans people. Autumn Sobleski repeatedly mishandled me and my dysphoria in group sessions and in private sessions, her written assessment of me misgendered me many times and my gender was put as, "male," DESPITE the fact that it has been changed on my birth certificate and state ID, she diagnosed me with BPD without telling me or even discussing it with me, and she was generally presumptuous and callous in matters of gender dysphoria. Deborah Ehle, I believe her name is, the older one, also repeatedly misgendered me and claimed that my obviously dissociative disorder was, "just psychosis," despite my fitting the DSM-5 for OSDD much better. This place sucks, don't waste your time here unless you have to

Just Awful. 0 stars actually. I stayed an extra week from Georgia so I could join an appointment with my mother and advocate for her. Not only did Leah at the front desk give my mother the wrong address, but she also didn’t give her the full name of the clinic. And then neglected to answer the phone the morning of her appointment so we could get the correct information. The only reason I was able to find it was because I googled the phone number. We were only 4 minutes past the allotted late time. And then we were told to come back and reschedule after that. I had to leave back to Georgia, and her issues were not resolved. Very disappointing, this is a very poorly run establishment. I’ll be looking into other options for her, beware!!
