About Perception Counseling

Perception Counseling is an outpatient counseling center in Tucson, Arizona. They have counseling services to help with a number of issues including drug and alcohol addiction.

I found that this counseling center is actually best known for their court mandated counseling and classes for legal issues like DUI. They can be a great resource for people who are in a legal bind and need to fulfill these types of requirements whether for probation, to return their driver’s license, or whatever the circumstances may be. They are very familiar with the legal system and the paperwork you’ll need to provide. This could be the place to go for court ordered classes and counseling.

It’s also worth noting that this counseling center has services in English and Spanish to make their classes and services more accessible. Keep in mind that the reviews are a mixed bag. Some clients said they received their services smoothly. Others said that they have had issues with administrative details.

Joseph, you are amazing. I honor your trust to share your thoughts from your heart. It is people like you, Joseph, who will be successful in your recovery because you recognize how to open up in a Safe Place, your Safe Harbor at Perception Counseling, open and willing to trust and receive the specific tools for you to have a safe journey ahead. We are human; we all make mistakes from time to time, and when we can be honest with ourselves and others, "Failure is not an option," and "Knowledge is Power." We are all guided by a Higher Source, and as long as we allow our Higher Source to order our steps, allow ourselves to be surrounded with a Hedge of Protection, and know that we know, that we see, we are on the correct path. Love is (an action) a powerful fact you forgive yourself and, most importantly, Love yourself. We will always love you until you learn to love yourself, and the truth about you is that you are Loved!!! You are a Success story, and what a wonderful testimony. Hi Danny, you are so kind and truthful and have a strong spirit to share words from your heart about Chris, who goes the extra mile. I'm very optimistic he appreciates these kind words from your heart, and you see the truth about his passion for helping folks like you who really care and sometimes not the most straightforward job to do. It is so refreshing to hear your words of gratitude about a man who has so much passion for his clients, his peeps, and the long hours spent making sure needs are met. Danny, you are an excellent man who takes time out of your hectic schedule to recognize and appreciate the extra care and extra length Chris puts into all his client's well-being and structure. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful client and support staff, at perception, who are caring men speaking straight from the heart. Love is not only for intimate partners, but love transfers through friendships and family members, and at Perception, you are family.

Worst place to ever go! Never submitted my certificate and MVD charged me an extra 500 due to interlock. Never answer after they take your money too

AWW, wow, this sounds incorrect, and you may be thinking about another agency or about where you went. Without violating HIPPA, we don't know who you are. Could you express a little about who you worked with? Could you call me personally? The Support Staff will put you through to the director if you are a client here at Perception. Could you call the Director, so I can understand what you are trying to say? We're here to help.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs support clients' successful reintegration into their home, workplace, and community. Drug rehab aftercare presumes that recovery requires life-long support. These programs typically offer a wide variety of services customized for the clients' unique and evolving needs. Clients may receive vocational training and career counseling, housing assistance, legal aid, peer coaching, and 12 step program induction, among other services. Clients' case managers often play a lead role in rehab aftercare planning.
12-step icon12-Step
Many addiction recovery centers base their treatment modalities on the 12 step program model, and those in treatment often transition to community-based programs. These programs can also be effective for clients who choose not to enter rehab. Traditionally, 12 step meetings are designed to provide intensive peer support whenever it is needed. In addition to group meetings and peer sponsorship, participants "work the steps" to achieve recovery through a systematic healing of the mind, body, and spirit.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
If you're struggling with adjusting to daily life after inpatient rehab, a sober living home in Arizona may be a good option. These residences offer an in-between option where you can practice the skills you learned in rehab in a structured, drug-free environment. This transition can help you prepare to face the "real world" after treatment. You'll live with others in recovery and follow house rules such as contributing to chores and paying rent.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
If a person denies their substance abuse behavior when confronted one-on-one, a drug intervention in Arizona may be necessary. An intervention may be formally planned with intervention services from a professional who can guide loved ones through this process. The intervention involves confronting someone with how their drinking or drug use has affected themselves and everyone around them and encourages them to get treatment.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Arizona is the process of treating individuals who are dependent on a particular addictive drug. Because addiction is complex, this treatment typically includes a variety of interventions that address the many physical and emotional issues involved.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Also known as CBT, cognitive behavioral therapy in Arizona is one of the most common types of psychotherapy. It offers a structured method of counseling that effectively treats substance use disorder and dual diagnosis disorders.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual therapy for drug and alcohol addiction includes focused attention on the unique challenges that trigger addictive behavior. During individual therapy sessions, you have a safe space in which to discuss stressors and emotional struggles. Therapy fosters trust and open communication that helps develop personalized strategies to overcome addiction.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Residents of Arizona who are experiencing relationship problems may benefit from couples therapy. This form of psychotherapy helps couples express their feelings, resolve conflicts, and increase intimacy and affection.

Family therapy involves sessions where members of the family discuss how addiction has affected them individually and collectively. Therapists can guide families in developing coping strategies that help support their loved one's recovery while also focusing on their own emotional health.

Developing life skills is an important piece of addiction recovery treatment. These skills help you succeed in day to day tasks and live a healthy, independent life. They include communication, critical thinking, problem solving, self control, and resilience.

Nutrition therapy helps reduce the discomfort of detox and reduces cravings during drug rehab in Arizona. It helps you navigate nutrition, teaching you how to plan and prepare meals that meet your nutritional needs.

Many holistic centers incorporate recreational therapy into addiction treatment to offer you a chance to rediscover joy in movement and motion and build social connections. Activities can include dance, group games, and yoga, which all help improve mental health, reduce stress, and develop positive lifestyle habits. These holistic approaches help sustain long term recovery.

Whatever you do steering clear of this place. I have been very patient with Debra lowther (owner) but she isunresponsive for the most part, incredibly neglectful and incompetant. She had the nerve to ask me if it was ok if she went into her office and talked to her friend even when i was there well passed my appointment time. (She was in her office for over an hour chatting away) Ive called, stopped in and gave them my name # and issue and even directly texted debra on her cell MANY times! and got NOWHERE. I've been put off over and over and over and there's a different excuse everytime why they cannot do their job. DO NOT give this place your money and effort. I've been hassling with her and the front office for months to simply input my information correctly so i can attain my driver license... yeah it's that ridiculous! I'm now forced to file a small claims and go somewhere else to complete my revocation packet. I cannot even put into words how upset and distraught I am. She has caused me many hours and emotional stress over this 😪

I first came here in 2019 they had a good program and good people who did there jobs right. Now in 2024 I came back here for my court ordered domestic violence classes and holy crap this place has gone completely to hell I am court ordered to do 52 classes and I've done 30 of my 52 right now it is January 23rd 2025 My probation officer hasn't gotten an update report from this place since October of 2024 they're supposed to send it monthly and every time I complain and tell them my PO is not getting the reports they act like they're going to send the report today but the next time I see my PO still haven't gotten a report it's been going on since I got here it's so bad now that my probation officer has even told me that he doesn't recommend people here anymore and quite frankly if you are court ordered to attend classes that need to be reported to your probation officer don't come here

Started 2021 I’ve had the “privilege” of speaking to Debra plenty of times with little done. She seems to always be on vacation or just getting back when you need something. For starters the whole “thing” from beginning to end is sketchy. I had a feeling I should keep my own records and so glad I did. They tried to add on classes for extra money saying it was required by probation and I paid in full ahead of time. When I found out getting ahold of Debra (only one who can sign certificates or send ADOT certificates) for a refund was a headache. I had to “pop up” at the location to which she said I needed to wait till she finished a class so I did. I waited over an hour in the lobby. She refused a refund and even brought out a totally different ledger than I had seen and have a picture of. It wasn’t until I showed all the proof I had and stated that I’d get a lawyer than only did I walk out with my cash refund. AFTER I pointed out the falsified documents. Saying the new one was missing my initials and that I still had my original receipt as well. Fast forward I thought my time dealing with the lovely Debra was over. Then comes February of 2024 ADOT says they never received the completion letter submitted on the portal. So here I go asking her AGAIN to which she says she has to pull my file from archive but Feb 4th she says by tomorrow 4pm. Okay cool. Now comes time to get my breathalyzer removed but I couldn’t because DEBRA NEVER UPLOADED THE DOCUMENT! So there I go calling AGAIN and this time she tells me just landed to give her till 1130 I call and eventually talk to her and when she mentions she’s “sorry she just got back from vacation and wasn’t thinking about work for the week due to mental health” (her not knowing what she’s done to mine) I just say oh I’m sorry but this isn’t from recently. She goes off telling me I’m tailgating her when I wasn’t…. Although you kinda have to do to make sure you get what you need done…. Goes on saying how it’s my fault that this should of been handled in February to which I replied “exactly” she hung up on me and had one of her office staff who clearly are aware of the ongoing issues call me that it is now done. Debra was unprofessional, childish and toxic. I’m glad my time connected to perception counseling has came to an end and I don’t ever recommend this place. It’s not worth the savings I’m telling you. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB as well even if they are not accredited. I can see why.

This was one of the worst experiences of my life. The office and administration portion of the staff is horrendous, but the counselors themselves are decent. Classes would never start on time being an average of 23 minutes late, and we would be held back constantly. The front staff is rude combative and inept at simple tasks that really hold up the entire process. I finished classes and needed to get my cartilage and it took an entire hour before they had even begun to work on the process and then had a clerical issue that almost had me do another round of classes. Please for the love of god avoid this place at all cost.
