About Sabino Recovery

Sabino Recovery is a mental health and addiction treatment facility in Tucson, Arizona. It’s located on a 140 acre property that provides clients with calming desert and mountain views. Clients can expect to get a personalized treatment plan for recovery after a thorough assessment is completed. The treatment plan begins after a client has successfully completed the detox program. The organization believes in the importance of individual therapy, which is why every client will participate in 50 one on one sessions in 35 days. Patients will also be participating in a small group therapy that doesn’t have more than eight individuals, as well as family therapy sessions.

One service that stands out to me is the number of drug addictions they offer treatment for. Clients can receive treatment for Percocet addiction, fentanyl addiction, benzodiazepine abuse and many other substances. An additional thing I like about this facility is the various therapeutic approaches they use. Beyond common therapeutic approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, staff members also employ expressive art therapy and meditation to help clients with recovery.

This facility also offers many integrative therapies that clients can choose to take advantage of. These integrative therapies include hypnosis, tai chi and many other unique therapeutic activities.

Sabino Recovery has a continuing care program that begins when a client is first admitted. Staff members start developing an aftercare plan that may include intensive outpatient programs and sober living arrangements. Clients can also be a part of lifelong alumni programs, which offer individualized follow ups and weekly group Zoom calls for continual support in maintaining sobriety.

My intention is not to leave a review about Sabino Canyon Recovery Center based on my positive, negative, or neutral experiences. Given the nature of this business, I was unsure whether writing a review was worthwhile. Here is an honest evaluation from the perspective of someone who genuinely justneeded the world to be silent for a bit so that she could shut out the noise and learn what healing looks like. This was just the place I need to do at least that.Sabino benefits those for whom it is intended. I used to say "Sabino Saved my life" and in a lot of ways, it gave me the tools to at least be ready for the battle. The war however, that is on you. The aftercare has been problematic and disappointing at best, especially for individuals who are not living in Arizona, who are not returning to a stable home situation or who experienced a poor "family week" for whatever reason.Sabino benefits those for whom it is intended. There is no doubt. But like anything great, nothing is ever perfect.I adore Sabino, my prior treatment team, the individuals who worked on the grounds, the cuisine, and all of the self-care therapy staff. However, it is ultimately The administration team inspired me to speak up. The favoritism I witnessed during my time in and out of treatment is ridiculous at best, as well as the failure to follow through on initiatives I suggested, particularly for SI, made me feel as if I have been robbed of my voice I know we all are ideally suppose to feel we have there. All I can say is that you know who you are. As supported as I felt at times, I felt equally failed especially with navigating complex and sensitive family situations. You know who you are regarding lack of follow-up when you said you would call and check in more frequently to verify that all of my aftercare is being managed. There has been a huge let down as well in the support I thought I would have in billing my insurance for part of treatment expenses. Mostly everything outside of controlling what is within me has not been supported since leaving, basically... Please do better for support for out of state individuals who don't have care or family already in place.Overall, I am grateful and I can see who truly meant "We Got You" and for now, that has been enough. Thank you. Stay Healed.

I m a psychiatrist and owner of a group practice treating trauma, mood disorders and substance use, among other things. Our practice struggles to find good treatment programs anywhere in the country when our patients need a higher level of care. Finding an outstanding one has been impossible. My practice got to tour the property, speak with the intake coordinators, the doctors, nurses, therapists and even their incredible chef and his staff. They are all dedicated to providing thoughtful, evidence based, personalized care in an atmosphere free from shame or judgment. Everyone on that campus is there to support their patients along their journey. Sabino has a true focus on wellness, strength building and planning for supportive future care when the program is complete. They are so vastly different from models that focus on only the illness and programs that do not personalize care. If you need help with trauma, mood disorders or substance use, (can be one of these -many patients do not have all three), please reach out to their intake. I cannot recommend a program more highly.Stephanie Hartselle, MD

Accepted Insurance

Sabino Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Many clients who enroll in an outpatient rehab program are exiting intensive inpatient care and no longer require such high-level clinical supervision. Outpatient programs typically follow a step-down structure, with treatment frequency and intensity decreasing as clients progress in their recovery journey. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels of care are the most time-intensive and are designed primarily for clients who have just left inpatient treatment or who are at an elevated risk of relapse.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery and those who are exiting detox programs. It's ideal for clients in crisis or at an elevated risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment centers provide housing and meals, allowing clients to focus on their recovery away from distractions and addiction triggers. Clients engage in intensive psychotherapy, and many inpatient programs feature recovery-focused life skills training and/or complementary therapies like meditation, creative arts therapy, and other holistic treatments.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs support clients' successful reintegration into their home, workplace, and community. Drug rehab aftercare presumes that recovery requires life-long support. These programs typically offer a wide variety of services customized for the clients' unique and evolving needs. Clients may receive vocational training and career counseling, housing assistance, legal aid, peer coaching, and 12 step program induction, among other services. Clients' case managers often play a lead role in rehab aftercare planning.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
The initial phase of recovery treatment typically includes 24-hour clinical care in Arizona. This constant supervision ensures a safe detox process, which helps the individual physically stabilize from substance use. Patients will receive medications to curb withdrawal symptoms and cravings, as well as other necessary medical treatment. This period typically lasts up to a week, then the individual will receive medical clearance to begin inpatient or outpatient rehab.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Arizona is the process of treating individuals who are dependent on a particular addictive drug. Because addiction is complex, this treatment typically includes a variety of interventions that address the many physical and emotional issues involved.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction. Equine assisted therapy is particularly powerful and effective in the treatment of addictions and trauma, as both are marked by detachment from others and a lack of trust in one’s self and one’s environment. Working to build connection with a horse can not only assist residents in re-grounding themselves, but can also offer the hope of forging new and trusting relationships in the world beyond treatment.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist’s finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that result from disturbing life experiences. It is one of the most widely researched and validated methods used today in the treatment of trauma. EMDR is based on the premise that a disturbing experience becomes locked in the brain and stored with the same perceptions that existed at the time of the event.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy helps reduce the discomfort of detox and reduces cravings during drug rehab in Arizona. It helps you navigate nutrition, teaching you how to plan and prepare meals that meet your nutritional needs.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

They’re good people it’s a pretty good program. They let you have your phones which honestly sucks cause people just hide in there rooms on there phones when they’re not in group instead of forming community which is where slot of healing happens. Steven goldsmith the admission guy I do not like. I toured the place and I heard him swearing in another room cause I was taking my time deciding to come

What an incredible place!!! I was living with trauma for 50 years which got to the point of my anxiety and depression taking over my life. It was the most difficult decision of my life but the most important. I left in in July 2024 after 35 days and my life is so different now, all for the better. The staff is so caring and loving from the Therapists to the BHT's (Behavioral Health Technicians), the Nursing staff, etc. On my first full day it seemed like everyone on the staff knew my name and welcomed me with open arms. Individual Therapy, Process Groups, Group Therapy and a plethora of other sessions keep you busy but there is still free time to relax and socialize or do whatever you want. And the Saturday trips for coffee at Le Buzz and Sunday field trips allow you to clear your mind and be in the public so you're prepared for the next step. Sabino works on so many different levels, not just the mind but also the body and heart with integrative therapies such as massage, yoga, qi gong, brain mapping, equine therapy to name a few. And you will never go hungry because (although I will never really admit it to the staff) the food was incredible. Sunday brunch was terrific. Sabino is on a big property but there are less than 35 Residents at a time. But there is also basketball, pickle ball, tennis and a huge swimming pool. The wildlife is so beautiful from jack rabbits, coyotes, javelinas, etc. and the sunrises and sunsets are so beautiful and calming. The Residents (or as I called everyone...my family) are just wonderful. There was not one person who didn't care about another and I was able to have so many open conversations with everyone. They were so accepting and non-judgmental. I learned so much from everyone and I miss all of them. And when it was time for me to leave, my continuing care was all planned and laid out for me so I knew I was going to succeed. Plus, there are Alumni Zooms every Tuesday (just Alumni) and Thursday (with Alumni director/Therapist) so there are times that I feel like I have never left. For the first time in my life I can honestly say that I like myself, but more important, that I am my best friend. And I could never have done this without Sabino. If you every have a doubt about Sabino, get it out of your head. It will be the best decision you will ever make!!! WE GOT YOU!!!

Sabino is likely an excellent facility for treatment involving behavioral change. Special shout out to Shara and Angel for being lovely to work with. That said, and without disclosing patient details, their medical team is not equipped to handle complex mental health patients, their sales team is a bit too optimistic in their overpromising, and their admissions team is too lax in patient admittance protocols. (Direct feedback was shared and was well accepted regarding this, but I do feel public disclosure is warranted also.) All the best

First and foremost, Sabino Recovery impressed me immediately with the amazing person I spoke with after hours… Sam Zimmer. What an amazing person to give me such important information while knowing that this was not going to work out. I am so grateful for the honesty and forthcomingness, and just had to write a review. I believe anyone that is lucky to go here, will be successful. Thank you for your guidance, Sam!

Do not come here for chronic pain! I came this place with the expectation that they would be able to help. They claimed it was because my nervous system is dysregulated. While that is true to a certain extent with my history, the treatment just made it more obvious that there are deeper physical issues going on. At that point the head physician offered to put me on a stronger painkiller than doctors had been willing to in the past. I thought I would finally have some relief. The same day she came back and said I had to try a different kind of patch first, which turned into her saying the different patch was all I was going to need after all, despite what she had said earlier. My pain is muscular and comes and goes, she kept trying to pressure me about where my pain levels were at on a 1 to 10 scale at every point in the day, which is almost impossible to quantify perfectly because every day is different. It was obvious to me that she was trying as hard as she could to not prescribe the meds to me, and I can't fight against something like that as a patient. I ended up breaking down in that appointment, I couldn't handle that roller coaster. The nurses were almost inept when it came to dealing with addiction meds, one nurse was fired early on in my stay for refusing to give someone who was detoxing their Suboxone. I was misled about how many physical interventions I would be receiving (massage/acupuncture). It turns out it works more like a lottery system than getting to pick your schedule. I was also still expected to go to groups with people processing substance abuse and trauma when that's not what I was there for. They made my stay about something else to make sure everything lined up with the, "system." It felt like admin just shoves desperate people through the door and then whatever happens happens. My admin person Tiffany also never responded to my texts, the whole place is an over compartmentalized mess and I felt like nobody ever had the full story. It was always, "oh that's not my job, talk to so and so!" Two stars for the food, chef was great! Oh yeah, they also refused to give me my meds or tell me why when I left. I had to try to grab them myself, and if whoever replies to this really wants to get into what happened after go right ahead. This whole industry is built around money and building, "delicate geniuses," careers. I know that's not just a Sabino problem, but it's a big problem at Sabino.

Best all around treatment in the world, top notch clinicians and techs. Mix that with the warmth and compassion from everyone, on top of the great facility. Takes a unique holistic approach to treatment rather than blindly following a textbook. If you have the money don’t think twice.

Sabino is unlike any other treatment center I’ve ever been to and for anyone reading these and wondering whether they should choose this place, the answer is yes, pack your bags. It’s ALWAYS scary to take that step, but this is one you will not regret. I have been to several in the past 2 years and none of them came even close to the overall, deep healing that Sabino offers. It’s different in a good way. First off, the true healing always begins once you leave, but you get the tools, the friendships, the stability and the awareness at Sabino. Instead of just focusing on the issue at hand, they dive deeper and focus on where the issue came from. They dig deeper, love deeply, and give you tools you never thought you had inside you or needed, but actually did. The staff is amazing, it’s beautiful, clean, great food and a great atmosphere to heal in. Trust me when I say you are well on your way when you choose this place.
