About Rockingham Memorial Hospital – Behavioral Health Services

Sentara’s Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia, serves a seven-county area providing a variety of inpatient and outpatient behavioral services. This includes treatment for substance use disorder and addiction. Support is available to adults aged 18 and older, regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Including families in the treatment process is a big part of this hospital’s approach. And it makes sense. Strong support systems and community are a huge factor in successful long-term recovery. They also partner closely with local nonprofits and schools to offer further services and support community wellbeing.

Support is also offered for co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, PTSD, and more. There’s also 24-hour crisis care on hand, as well as counseling services to offer clients an outlet and a safe space to understand and talk about their issues.

Rockingham also provides a partial hospitalization program that includes individual, group, and family therapy, educational services, and stress management support within a structured psychiatric program and setting. Clients can return home at the end of each day to touch base and connect with their family or support system. These services are offered for up to six hours per day, five days a week.

She told me that she was going to order the EEG and a spin tap the next morning the Doctor came in and moved forward with the spine tap and was going to follow up after checking with the nerise there is no spine tap ordered and information from the doctor to the nurse there was not going to be one and this test was to rule out MS? why does this hospital use all resources to rule out everything they send you home with no answers WHAT A JOKE OF A HOSPITAL

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients in an intensive outpatient rehab (IOP) benefit from robust support but often do not require the high-level supervision and round-the-clock clinical care provided in an inpatient setting. Clients engage in multiple therapeutic sessions weekly, with most programs requiring between nine and 20 treatment hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehabs provide a wide array of evidence-based services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, holistic therapies, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured environment for intensive treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders. PHP treatment can consist of sessions ranging from 6-8 hours per day for an average of 90 days. You can often expect to engage in behavioral therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and receive medication. PHP treatment is often covered either fully or partially by insurance providers.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients participating in a rehab aftercare program receive comprehensive and customized support as they leave high-intensity treatment, reintegrate into their community, and focus on maintaining their sobriety. These programs offer a wide variety of services to align with the client's unique and evolving needs, often including medical, mental health, and social service program referrals. Clients typically develop their drug rehab aftercare plan in conjunction with their case manager and care team.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Emergency room: average wait time. No specialty testing 24/7 (MRI, CT scan, etc) unless it's life threatening. Nice staff, quick check-in. Stingy with pain meds.

My experience at Sentara was deeply disappointing and emotionally distressing. While I understand the importance of safety protocols in mental health crises, the lack of communication, transparency, and compassion during my stay was unacceptable. I was denied the use of the phone—even for a brief moment to inform my loved ones about what was happening. This left my family completely in the dark, terrified, and unaware of my whereabouts or the decisions being made about my care. No one told them that I was being transferred to another facility. When I was suddenly taken to the Pavilion in Williamsburg—a hospital three hours away—it was without explanation, without warning, and without any contact to my family. Looking back, I’m actually grateful that I was transferred—because the Pavilion did a way, way, way, way better job. The staff there knew what they were doing. They were kind, intentional, and emotionally intelligent. I was treated with dignity, respect, and compassion—something I did not experience at Sentara. Sentara needs to hire better-trained workers in the psychiatric intake and crisis stabilization area. People in crisis are not just risks to be managed—they are human beings who deserve to be spoken to, informed, and supported. If Sentara wants to be a place of healing, they must do better. What happened to me was not just an oversight—it was deeply harmful.

I have had a year-long nightmare dealing with this hospital since my routine colonoscopy last March. The billing department and doctor's office cannot communicate effectively, leading my bill to be sent to collections. The gastroenterologist coded the procedure incorrectly to begin with, causing my insurance to not cover it all. All he needed to do was correct the coding and have the billing department resubmit it to insurance. It's been a year and they can't manage to do this simple task. I wish I could say this was a simple error, but I've heard so many other people say similar things that I think it's a major issue with the hospital. AVOID SENTARA AT ALL COSTS! Please know this is NOT a negative review towards the amazing nurses and most of the doctors working at RMH... they are doing their best in a corrupt hospital system.
