About St. Clair Hospital

The Psychiatry and Mental Health Services Department at Saint Clair Hospital provides psychiatric treatment for adults in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They offer inpatient or outpatient programs as well as education and support services for the community. They focus on mental health disorders and can offer referrals to specialized care, such as addiction rehab. You’re welcome to pay through self payment, private insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. They also offer financial assistance.

Their inpatient program has 26 beds and supports people in crisis who need immediate help. I like that as soon as you’re admitted into the program, they start working on your aftercare plan to make sure you have a strong support system in place once you leave their facility. They encourage your friends and family members to help develop your treatment plan because they’re familiar with your needs and condition. While you stay here, you’ll participate in group therapy sessions to work through your condition and understand more about it. If you need medication to help control your symptoms, your team can help you manage those.

If you need recovery support but aren’t experiencing a crisis, you can enter one of their outpatient programs. I thought it was neat that the providers in this program focus on important life skills during group therapy sessions. During these discussions, you’ll learn how to solve problems effectively, become more assertive, and live in harmony with others. They’ll also show you healthy ways to manage stress and what you can do to prevent a relapse.

One former client says they were amazed to find a facility that offers this kind of support so close to home. They say the team of doctors and nurses saved their life and called the program a hidden gem.

Let me just start my saying I'm biased. I was born here. In spite of that, I've had to unfortunately come in for four times in the last 2 months into the ER. Yes, some days they are understaffed and busy. Yes, some days the waiting room can be full. Do you not notice the ambulances coming in though? So many people don't understand triage. Please be kind and patient to them. As a former medic in the army, you don't know what it's like back there or how hard they work. Yes, some nights some staff can appear short but please keep this in mind: you're here for a few hours, they're here for 12. They are working around the clock day and night dealing with let's be frank cranky, rude, loud jerks. Yes you might be there for a few hours. At least you get to go home after. This hospital has saved 2 of my family members lives now, and I'll be forever grateful to them for that. They took great care of me when my house caught fire and I was asleep in it. They've taken great care of me since they brought me into this world.TOO LONG DIDNT READ? Have some basic human decency and a little compassion.

Was there on 3-25-25 for emergency foot surgery. EVERY staff member was overly kind, patient and caring. I had 8 different nurse assistants and nurses on my two day stay. Absolutely fantastic staff, I wish I could remember all their names. Even the cat scan gent came and checked on me day two. It s not even his job he was just being kind when he saw me. That s the kind of service that I will return to if necessary. Also Dr. Zack, who did my surgery was very kind and informative. While I stayed there, I witnessed and heard a majority of disrespectful and a rude patients. People, yelling and cussing at the staff & the whole time they kept their composure. The nurse on staff Jinn Was so kind and patient, even though she was being screamed and cursed at for no reason whatsoever.I see a lot of bad reviews on here and I seriously wonder if their actual bad experiences or just bad people making bad experiences for themselves. Also, I must double commend the nursing assistants on staff I do not remember their names. I know the one lady was from Columbia and they were top-notch professionals, even though I had many needs because I couldn t walk.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients engaged in intensive outpatient programs (IOP) live and work in their home community while receiving frequent, high-level care. These programs offer personalized care designed to evolve with the clients' changing needs. Many intensive outpatient rehabs require a minimum of nine hours of treatment per week, but high-risk clients and those in early recovery may receive up to 20 hours of care weekly. IOP services generally include addiction counseling, recovery education, and holistic therapies, such as massage.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving services from a rehab aftercare program are usually stable and in the maintenance phase of recovery, having completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services can vary widely based on clients' individual and evolving needs, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, 12 step program induction, and medical, mental health, and social service referrals. Individual care plans are typically developed by the client in partnership with their case manager and care team.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs prioritize the recovery journey as a life-long process based on personal spiritual growth and ongoing peer support. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings, which are held multiple times each day in most communities, is expected. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring by a self-selected peer sponsor. The 12 steps are designed to encourage participants' self-compassion, awareness, acceptance, and accountability. Dedicated programs for specialized groups, including seniors, teens, and families, are common.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Residents of a sober living home in Pennsylvania pay rent and contribute to household maintenance. For their contributions, individuals get the opportunity to live in a substance-free environment and receive support from others in recovery while all residents practice sober-living skills. Sober living expenses are not covered by insurance since they are not treatment services. However, grants and scholarships are often available to help individuals afford rent for men's or women's sober living.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services bring extensive experience to the planning and conducting of drug interventions in Pennsylvania. These experts can facilitate interventions in a sensitive manner that encourages positive outcomes. The goal of the intervention is to educate the individual about addiction and the consequences of their substance use and encourage them to get the treatment they need. Interventions can be effective with all types of drugs and alcohol addiction.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
With a partial hospitalization program (PHP), you can participate in intensive rehabilitation treatment with the ability to return home at the end of the day. For a weekly minimum of 20 hours, a partial hospitalization program can take place up to 5 days a week for an average of 90 days. During PHP treatment, you can receive relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group therapy, and other behavioral therapy interventions.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Because the severity of withdrawal symptoms can fluctuate, constant monitoring under 24-hour clinical care in Pennsylvania is recommended for early recovery. As you undergo detox, medical staff will supervise your health and ensure severe symptoms do not develop or threaten your life. Professional counselors will also be available to treat mental and emotional health needs.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
A medical detox is the safest way to wean your body off drugs and/or alcohol in an inpatient setting. When detoxing from addictive substances, the physical and psychological side effects of withdrawal can cause mood swings, anxiety, nausea, or flu-like symptoms. In medically assisted detox, a team of medical professionals are on hand 24/7 to help alleviate potential withdrawal symptoms, administer medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and ultimately keep you safe and comfortable throughout this process.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Personalized therapy sessions in Pennsylvania typically include a safe and nonjudgmental setting in which you can express your deepest emotions and feelings and explore the factors that have contributed to addiction. Therapists tailor the sessions to help you develop healthier thought patterns and behaviors, which improve your self control and build a foundation for your long term sobriety.

It is important to process the impact that traumatic experiences have had on your life. During trauma therapy, you and an experienced therapist confront these experiences and the emotional impact it is had. This helps to reduce your symptoms of stress and anxiety and improve your overall mental health and well being.

Couples therapy in Pennsylvania is typically short term treatment that focuses on building skills that lead to positive long term relationship changes. Sessions with the therapist may occur both jointly and individually.

Family therapy teaches individual family members in Pennsylvania the benefits of collectively combating addiction. Therapists help individual members establish healthy boundaries between themselves and their loved one who is struggling with addiction. This helps improve emotional support systems and creates a bond so families work together to sustain long term recovery.

Life skills are the mental and social skills that are necessary to navigate day to day life. Addiction diminishes or eliminates these skills, so they must be relearned and practiced during drug rehab treatment in Pennsylvania.

The goal of nutrition therapy is to help you understand how your diet affects your overall health. It teaches you healthy eating habits, which speed up your recovery and give you the nutrients you need for long term physical and mental health.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Poor Respect for Patients

I trusted and used St. Clair Hospital and its associated physicians for most of my life. After very poor experiences and interactions with ER staff, 3 different PCPs and several specialists over the last 5 years I will never consider seeking care from St. Clair Health again ... Read More

I had 2 knuckles relaced by Dr. Mullen and his team this year. I am back to work and the pain is gone. I had pain in my index finger from arthritis for over 35 years. My thumb has been a problem for 5 years. I am still going to therapy for my thumb but it is alot better already. I'm also very happy with the therapy I receive from St. Clair. No pain is so nice. Dr. MULLEN and S t. Clair therapist's I would recommend to anyone!!

I'm incredibly disappointed in this hospital, it used to be so nice and clean when I was younger and now I'm in shock. Can't go into any bathroom without finding urine or feces on the toilet seats, saw ants in the waiting room when we were waiting during surgery. No one can navigate you around anywhere and was mostly rude to ask, we walked around for a while before we could find someone who knew what they were doing. It's incredibly hot everywhere and not temperature regulated properly. I was extremely disappointed, only positive to this whole experience, was we had an incredible doctor. Thank god for him.

Criminals. Spent 1 hour in their emergency department for a cut, maybe 10 minutes actually being treated. Insurance is billed a few hundred for the doctor. Fine. Then I receive a separate bill, over $1400 to my insurance. I call for an explanation and I'm given an e-mail address. It took several days for them to tell me that the second bill was for the pleasure of waiting in an examination room. I asked for further explanation, but did not receive a response. I never thought I would wish I'd gone to a MedExpress.

They didn't register me until I was leaving. They didn't seem to want to take care of really anything until near the end They didn't feed me and I was starving for some reason. They didn't give me water, which made no sense. Considering it's been a week since my injury and I was very thirsty clearly, I was drinking water the whole time, and it didn't affect the damn thing. I was there for hours with no bed. No room at all to myself sitting by the nurse's station, barely being seen by anyone.Very displeased.

I would give zero stars if I could, this hospital does not care about patients or the long term outcome of how poorly they were treated here!! How many lives have they taken? How prejudice they are! They refuse to do procedures on me because I have a form of Hemoglobinopathy that is like a sickle cell trait and they don't know how to monitor me correctly under anesthesia, meanwhile, they have been doing procedures for years prior. They said they don't have many sickle cell patients because they don't get many people like that, people like what??? I know what they meant. If you have any psychiatric issue, DO NOT COME HERE!! Security laughs at you and staff thinks it's funny and will talk about you in front of your family. It's seriously disgusting and disturbing at how sickening this place is and because they have a huge legal team and doctors are afraid to go against doctors. Nobody holds them accountable for any of it. And forget trying the patient representative to help or come to a solution. She can't. She is the same, all about the bottom line and protecting St. Clair and she will sing it's praises and hand you off to someone else. She has no interest in solving the problem or resolving the issue. If you question your care, you are a crazy person and called rude. So NEVER question your care and if you feel you need something you aren't getting in the hospital stay, don't ask. Some Doctors have a complex that they are always right. And some are rude and disrespectful. They also chart inaccurately about you and lie. PLEASE make your complaint to The Joint Commission On Hospital Accreditation, this WILL be the ONLY place your voice will be heard and make an impact.
