About St. Clair Hospital

St. Clair Hospital provides psychiatric and mental health treatment in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving adults and young adults experiencing acute mental health crises and ongoing behavioral health conditions. While Allegheny County has one mental health provider for every 210 residents, St. Clair Hospital’s dedicated Behavioral Health Unit offers structured, hospital-based care for those who need a higher level of support. People seeking mental health treatment in Pittsburgh can access both inpatient and outpatient services at this established community hospital.

Inpatient Psychiatric Care

The inpatient program at St. Clair Hospital operates a 26-bed unit for people in crisis who require immediate, round-the-clock stabilization. Clinical staff begin discharge and aftercare planning at the time of admission, coordinating with family members and support systems to build a care plan that reflects the person’s individual needs and circumstances. Group therapy sessions focus on understanding mental health conditions, developing coping strategies, and preparing for the transition home.

For those who need structured support without a hospital stay, inpatient and outpatient psychiatric programs at St. Clair Hospital address conditions ranging from mood disorders to crisis stabilization, using individual therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma therapy, and family therapy as part of a personalized treatment plan.

Programs and Payment

St. Clair Hospital offers adult, young adult, LGBTQ-inclusive, and military programs, alongside life skills training and nutritional therapy. The hospital accepts private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, military insurance, and offers sliding scale payment assistance for those who qualify. People managing both a mental health condition and a co-occurring substance use concern can find more information about dual diagnosis treatment options through Rehab.com’s treatment resources.

Update: 2 years later. This place still has my rose gold ring and rose gold necklace and I would like them back. One represents my marriage and the other represented my mother. Please call me when you “find” them. Thanks. I still have yet to be contacted to resolve this issue as people promised. This is unacceptable. Gold is very valuable and patients shouldn’t have to deal with this with any of their belongings.

Had heart attack on 3/14, went to emergency room and was admitted. Thoroughly professional and everything went very well. I've have a back surgery (2017) and 3 shoulder surgeries (2001, 2007, 2009) and all went very well. I highly recommend this Hospital!! I'm in their Cardiac Rehab program now, nothing short of stellar in my opinion!!

I was informed that they control specialist associates from providing appointment times of the date, saying they will call the day before. If a procedure has prep, how can you successfully plan for it? The idea of sitting by the phone for them to give you the go ahead is ridiculous and clearly does not have the patient in mind.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Clients engaged in intensive outpatient programs (IOP) live and work in their home community while receiving frequent, high-level care. These programs offer personalized care designed to evolve with the clients' changing needs. Many intensive outpatient rehabs require a minimum of nine hours of treatment per week, but high-risk clients and those in early recovery may receive up to 20 hours of care weekly. IOP services generally include addiction counseling, recovery education, and holistic therapies, such as massage.

Clients receiving services from a rehab aftercare program are usually stable and in the maintenance phase of recovery, having completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services can vary widely based on clients' individual and evolving needs, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, 12 step program induction, and medical, mental health, and social service referrals. Individual care plans are typically developed by the client in partnership with their case manager and care team.

12 step programs prioritize the recovery journey as a life-long process based on personal spiritual growth and ongoing peer support. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings, which are held multiple times each day in most communities, is expected. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring by a self-selected peer sponsor. The 12 steps are designed to encourage participants' self-compassion, awareness, acceptance, and accountability. Dedicated programs for specialized groups, including seniors, teens, and families, are common.

Residents of a sober living home in Pennsylvania pay rent and contribute to household maintenance. For their contributions, individuals get the opportunity to live in a substance-free environment and receive support from others in recovery while all residents practice sober-living skills. Sober living expenses are not covered by insurance since they are not treatment services. However, grants and scholarships are often available to help individuals afford rent for men's or women's sober living.

Intervention services bring extensive experience to the planning and conducting of drug interventions in Pennsylvania. These experts can facilitate interventions in a sensitive manner that encourages positive outcomes. The goal of the intervention is to educate the individual about addiction and the consequences of their substance use and encourage them to get the treatment they need. Interventions can be effective with all types of drugs and alcohol addiction.

With a partial hospitalization program (PHP), you can participate in intensive rehabilitation treatment with the ability to return home at the end of the day. For a weekly minimum of 20 hours, a partial hospitalization program can take place up to 5 days a week for an average of 90 days. During PHP treatment, you can receive relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group therapy, and other behavioral therapy interventions.

Because the severity of withdrawal symptoms can fluctuate, constant monitoring under 24-hour clinical care in Pennsylvania is recommended for early recovery. As you undergo detox, medical staff will supervise your health and ensure severe symptoms do not develop or threaten your life. Professional counselors will also be available to treat mental and emotional health needs.

A medical detox is the safest way to wean your body off drugs and/or alcohol in an inpatient setting. When detoxing from addictive substances, the physical and psychological side effects of withdrawal can cause mood swings, anxiety, nausea, or flu-like symptoms. In medically assisted detox, a team of medical professionals are on hand 24/7 to help alleviate potential withdrawal symptoms, administer medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and ultimately keep you safe and comfortable throughout this process.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Personalized therapy sessions in Pennsylvania typically include a safe and nonjudgmental setting in which you can express your deepest emotions and feelings and explore the factors that have contributed to addiction. Therapists tailor the sessions to help you develop healthier thought patterns and behaviors, which improve your self control and build a foundation for your long term sobriety.

It is important to process the impact that traumatic experiences have had on your life. During trauma therapy, you and an experienced therapist confront these experiences and the emotional impact it is had. This helps to reduce your symptoms of stress and anxiety and improve your overall mental health and well being.

Couples therapy in Pennsylvania is typically short term treatment that focuses on building skills that lead to positive long term relationship changes. Sessions with the therapist may occur both jointly and individually.

Family therapy teaches individual family members in Pennsylvania the benefits of collectively combating addiction. Therapists help individual members establish healthy boundaries between themselves and their loved one who is struggling with addiction. This helps improve emotional support systems and creates a bond so families work together to sustain long term recovery.

Life skills are the mental and social skills that are necessary to navigate day to day life. Addiction diminishes or eliminates these skills, so they must be relearned and practiced during drug rehab treatment in Pennsylvania.

The goal of nutrition therapy is to help you understand how your diet affects your overall health. It teaches you healthy eating habits, which speed up your recovery and give you the nutrients you need for long term physical and mental health.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Horrible experience on the BHU (Behavioral Health Unit). I was left with bruises up and down my arms after constant pleas that the staff not grab me. I voiced my concerns, and they excused themselves from any wrong doing saying; "Sometimes bruising happens." Not true, based on the pictures that I showed the directors, those bruises were consistent with being grabbed multiple times. I wouldn't recommend this hospital to anyone! If you don't want your loved ones who are in a crisis to be grabbed, bruised, and berated by these unprofessional people, I'd suggest you don't go to this hospital. Not to mention that I came to this sorry hospital voluntarily. The board of directors there need to do better. I wouldn't wish that treatment I received on anyone. And one more thing... they discharged me two days after the incident so that in its own self should tell you something! And when called on it, they back tracked by saying it was on me. St. Clair please do better!
