About Caron Treatment Centers

Their inpatient detox starts with a comprehensive medical assessment. A multidisciplinary clinical team provides 24 hour medical care and supervision. Providers will continually monitor each person’s withdrawal symptoms, along with their physical and mental health. As needed, they may prescribe FDA-approved medications to improve client comfort, reduce drug cravings, and minimize the risk of relapse.

Following detox, you’ll transition into the facility’s inpatient program, which provides separate units for men and women. This program incorporates evidence-based practices such as cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy, 12 Step, motivational interviewing, addiction counseling, and a positive peer culture to ensure sustainable sobriety. Your family will be encouraged to participate in counseling to create an environment of long term recovery support.

Aftercare services may include connections to local, community-based providers that can deliver continued support through transportation, vocational training, transitional housing, and other resources.

They’re in-network with many commercial insurance providers. Contact your individual provider to confirm your coverage as out of network benefits might vary.

My experience in December of 1985 was one of the best things to ever happen to me. I learned one of the biggest eye opening thing, that the first drink gets you drunk. I had experimented many times to see which drink got me drunk so I could stop before then. Imagine my surprise to find out if I didn't have the first one, I wouldn't have gotten drunk at all. This December 16, God willing, will be 40 years sober for me. I can't express my gratitude enough for the Caron Foundation. I also remember Rosie. Thank you for giving me the tools to have a great life ever since.

I was recently a patient at Caron for 17 days, and while there were certainly some positives to my experience, there were also many areas that fell short of expectations. I’ll begin with the positives: the detox facility was excellent, the doctors were incredibly knowledgeable and down-to-earth, and the staff were kind and welcoming. The AA/NA speakers were inspiring, and I appreciated the exposure to many different types of recovery programs. The food was good, and having daily phone access (4–7 pm on weekdays and 2–7 pm on weekends) made it much easier to stay connected with loved ones, which I truly valued. That said, there were many areas that fell short. The inpatient side was rundown compared to detox and needs updating. Meal times for women were unreasonable — breakfast at 6:45, lunch at 11:30, and dinner at 4:45, with only 30 minutes to eat (with a portion of that spent getting your food and waiting in line). Medication distribution was another major issue. One staff member handled meds for over 30+ women, which sometimes meant waiting in line for more than an hour to get your meds. If you missed med time, you simply didn’t get your meds — something I’ve never seen handled this way at any other rehab. I was also surprised to receive a large, unexpected medication bill at discharge. At no point was I informed of these additional costs or asked if they were acceptable. Had I known, I would have declined some of the medications, especially since one of them was a prescription I had already brought from home, yet they ordered it anyway. Furthermore, the facility only uses a single pharmacy, which appears to be significantly overcharging patients. The biggest issue was discharge and aftercare. Due to not being given a firm discharge date and having my stay unexpectedly extended by six days beyond the 28 I had originally agreed to, I ultimately chose to leave. From that point on, support essentially stopped. My therapist never returned a single call, and it took over six days just to receive a treatment summary — which still contained inaccuracies. Calls and emails since then have gone largely unanswered. Also for anyone taking FMLA, they withhold return-to-work letters unless you complete the full 28–35 days, so be aware. Even though I left early, I am still in recovery and should be receiving support from a program I trusted with my care. Leaving before the full program does not mean relapse, yet I’ve been treated as if I no longer matter. I’ve had an incredibly difficult time getting a single person from multiple departments to return my calls or emails, and when I do finally receive documentation, it is filled with errors and inaccurate, misleading statements. For a program that claims to care about long-term recovery, this lack of basic follow-through is unacceptable. Overall, the doctors, the food, majority of staff, and phone access were positives, while the inpatient program, med lines, meal times, and especially the aftercare process left me frustrated and deeply disappointed. With all that said, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

Accepted Insurance

Please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Caron Treatment Centers works with several private insurance providers, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. At Caron, they take into account patients’ unique needs and circumstances, including their work and home life. If a client already has a stable, supportive environment in which to recover, they may not need to enter a residential program. In these cases, they often recommend outpatient treatment. This program addresses the same issues and disorders as inpatient treatment while also empowering patients and their families to continue everyday life.

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. At Caron Pennsylvania, patients undergo detox in an on-site, self-contained detoxification unit. Caron Renaissance is not an acute care facility and therefore does not offer detox services on site; however, they can arrange for transfers from hospitals and other healthcare centers once patients have finished detoxing.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Caron's full-time, on-site, highly credentialed staff and dynamic, comprehensive inpatient rehab programs meet people where they are. Whether a patient needs residential assessment, detox, inpatient addiction treatment, or long-term recovery support, they are careful to address individualized needs and circumstances.

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn’t spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Caron Renaissance patients can count on them to remain by their sides after treatment. They do everything possible to equip each patient for sober living before treatment ends and through the first year of recovery. One week prior to discharge, every patient at Caron Renaissance receives personalized Continuing Care planning in order to maximize their abilities to live lives of sobriety, serenity, and sustained recovery.

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Pennsylvania is devoted to the treatment of addiction. Levels of care, treatment methods, and settings differ, but the aim of each program is to end drug dependency and empower participants to achieve long-term recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Addiction and behavioral health issues affect persons with substance abuse problems and their loved ones. They understand that the families of addicts are deeply affected. Family members want to help their loved one, but the situation is delicate. Sometimes, the addiction becomes the family’s focus, throwing it into chaos. Addiction to drugs and alcohol inevitably leads to pain, confusion, and sadness. At Caron, they believe the patient is the family, and the family is the patient. In other words, they believe it’s crucial (and in some cases required) for the family to be engaged in holistic rehabilitation from the very beginning of the pre-admission process. They bring family members into the admission and assessment process from the start, so that their input can form the basis for a personalized addiction treatment plan. At Caron Renaissance, they pair new families with an alumni family “buddy” who can provide support, answer questions, and share experiences.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health. Caron focuses on giving patients tools to use as they move forward with life. Educating patients about diet and nutrition is a key part of the treatment that they provide at Caron. Teaching patients about the benefits of healthy nutrition and how to achieve it is an integral part of not only their treatment programming, but also one’s lifelong recovery. Research suggests that healthy eating habits have a positive impact on recovery and the ability to maintain sobriety.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My daughter arrived at Caron on December 6, 2006. We were a family devastated by her addiction. Now at almost 19 years later, we are a family full of love, understanding and pride. Congratulations to our daughter, Ashley, for 226 months of continuous recovery!
