I try to avoid this hospital at all costs. They do the bare minimum and do not care. If I ever need care I go to Morris Hospital. I recently had a ER visit at MH and they are outstanding as always.

Do not send anyone you love that has mental problems here. They'd rather chat to each other or play on their phones than care about patients. Then they threw away the paperwork for a loa from work. They don't even try to help you. No therapy, groups, nothing. You just sit there until they release you while they treat you like a bother.

Accepted Insurance

OSF Saint Elizabeth Medical Center – Ottawa works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) enable clients to receive high-level care while living at home. Clients may choose to enter IOP instead of enrolling in inpatient care post-detox or they may transition from an inpatient rehab into IOP. Intensive outpatient treatment involves multiple therapeutic sessions per week and includes a combination of psychotherapy and addiction and recovery education. Many programs also offer medication assisted treatment (MAT) and/or holistic therapies, such as acupuncture and massage.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs provide a full continuum of care for clients who are exiting inpatient treatment. Though outpatient care is often considered an element of drug rehab aftercare, services typically continue for the remainder of the clients' life and long after formal treatment is completed. Clients work with their case managers and care team to formulate a customized portfolio of medical, mental health, and social service resources designed to evolve as the client's needs change.

12-step icon12-Step

Participants in 12 step programs focus on emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth as the foundation for long-term sobriety. They engage in regular 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and accessible day and night, year-round, in most communities. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring from a self-selected sponsor. Though the 12 steps of recovery are based on spiritual principles, religious affiliation isn't required. Specialized formats are available, including programs for seniors, teens, and families.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

As a flexible option, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is tailored for those who don't require 24-hour care. PHP treatment can include daily therapeutic sessions and services such as relapse prevention and medication management. Based on your needs, PHP treatment duration can average 90 days and require a minimum of 20 hours of commitment weekly. While a partial hospitalization program typically requires a commute, telehealth may be available. PHP treatment costs can vary but are often covered by most insurance.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

During the medically supervised detox process, licensed medical professionals monitor your vitals and administer medications meant to help alleviate the physical symptoms of withdrawal. The process can take between five and seven days, although the actual length depends on your individual needs. In most cases, medically assisted detox is partially, if not fully, covered by insurance.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Don't go here for medical help. While staff is nice and seem concerned, I still don't have an answer after 3 weeks of waiting. Christine McNichols (patient rep) was supposed to get back to me, and I still haven't heard from her. Absolutely ridiculous!

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience in the ER was unsatisfactory. We appreciate you reaching out to our director, Don Trumpeter, and encourage you to share any additional details at www.osfhealthcare.org/feedback. Dr Kasik bad bed side manor, used profanity with my 12 year old son “shit”. We felt rushed, nurse and doctor didnt seem to really care. Chart was never reviewed by provider before visit. Doctor though son was 16 years old. Put cast on son and didnt seem to look to far in to his pain, never addressed shoulder injury. Told us water proof cast csnt go in a pool, then cast texh said it can after other cast was on. Did not feel genuinely care for by provider or rude nurse. Got second opinion at UW where they removed cast immediately and said the tissue needs to heal to allow the bone to heal correctly so put him in a tongue splint. UW also listened to our concerns of shoulder, xrayed, examination and found AC grade one injury and provided how to care for it. When osf doctor didnt even care to look in to the shoulder pain at all. Horrible service, Horrible provider that did NOT provide the best care for patients well being and future for hwaling and growth! Just slapped a cast on and called it a day like it was no big deal. Didnt offer pain meds for broken wrist or shoulder pain, did not tell us to Ice it or elevate it. HORRIBLE!!!!!! Ottawa OSF Orthopedic would rate less than one star for this provider and his nurse. Talk about feeling RUSHED and like you dont care about the patient!

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We understand how upsetting it can be to feel that your concerns were not fully heard or addressed, especially when it involves the care of a child. Your experience is important to us, and the issues you’ve described—regarding communication, thoroughness, and overall care—are not in line with the standards we strive to provide.

We encourage you to share your experience through our secure feedback form at osfhealthcare.org/feedback so our patient experience team can review it in detail and follow up appropriately. Your input is vital in helping us improve the quality of care and the patient experience for every family we serve.

OSF Healthcare has really went downhill. I would suggest any other hospital over Ottawa (if you even want to call it a hospital anymore, more like a poorly run urgent care). What a terrible experience. Shockingly i did get into a room fairly quick but it was well over 30 minutes until the doctor even came in the room and they were extremely slow tonight. The staff was very unprofessional and I felt my health was not a priority. After blood work it was nearly 2-1/2 hours until someone even came back in the room. Trust me the last thing I wanted to do was go to the emergency room yet I was treated like just another patient with mysterious symptoms we are unable to diagnose. Its pretty bad if I'm writing a review because I'm never write reviews. Im not speaking out of anger but more disappointment and concern for the people in our area. I pray at some point we get something better than OSF because overall the emergency rooms, urgent/prompt care, medical offices and what's left of specialists are poorly run.

Response from the owner
Jeff, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We regret to hear that your recent visit to our Ottawa facility left you feeling disappointed and unsupported. Your experience does not reflect the level of care and compassion we strive to provide, and your feedback has been shared with our patient experience team for further review.

If you’re willing, we encourage you to provide more details at www.osfhealthcare.org/feedback so we can better understand what happened and work to improve the care we offer to our community. Your voice matters, and we are committed to listening and learning from every patient’s experience.
