Back in 2022 there was a male paramedic security who gave me orders to leave the hospital I was asking for help and needed to use their phone to call support he was rude and told me I had a certain amount of time to use the phone before I needed to leave. It was crazy as he was taking away my privacy and access. His name was Jack I think! This paramedic was most likely not trained properly.

UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital – Cedar Rapids works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

This five-week program consists of 15 hours of education and group therapy designed to promote early intervention. This program is appropriate when there are concerns about an individual's substance use, but not sufficient data to substantiate chemical dependency.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

St. Luke's intensive outpatient treatment is structured to use the 12-step philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous. Treatment is provided by doctors, substance abuse counselors, family therapists, social workers, recreational therapists, nutritionists and spiritual care professionals. The group process focuses on communication and listening skills. Morning and evening programming times are available. The treatment schedule is three days per week for nine to ten weeks.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs support clients' reintegration into their home, workplace, and community following inpatient and residential treatment. They also promote long-term recovery for clients who may no longer be receiving outpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services encompass a wide range of modalities and often include various medical, mental health, and social service programs. Case managers and care teams develop clients' customized service plans based on the client's evolving needs and recovery goals.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

There are times when a carefully planned intervention is the very best way to approach a chemically-dependent loved one. To be successful, such a process needs careful planning and preparation. They offer intervention training and assistance for concerned family members.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly referred to as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term, intensive rehab option that provides structured treatment for those who don't require 24-hour care. PHP treatment can also be used as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a "step-down" option. Insurance coverage for PHP treatment varies. Typically, PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours a week and lasts an average of 90 days. PHP treatment often includes relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group therapy, and other behavioral therapy interventions.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. When medically-managed detoxification is indicated, a client may be admitted to the hospital. Following stabilization the client may be referred for outpatient treatment services.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

In the addiction treatment process, detox is typically the initial stage of recovery, and it involves 24-hour clinical care in Iowa. During this process, you receive constant medical supervision as harmful substances are purged from your body. Medical staff may prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and allow you to safely and comfortably break free from physical dependence on the substance.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Iowa is available in many formats. A variety of inpatient and outpatient options provide programs that are tailored to individual needs, making recovery possible for everyone.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

During cognitive behavioral therapy in Iowa, you'll gain a better understanding of your thinking and motivations. Your therapist will then help you develop new patterns of thinking and behaving that allow you to cope with life's challenges without abusing substances.

Dialectical behavior therapy helps you learn healthier ways to cope with your emotions and life stressors. The goal is to find a balance between acceptance of who you are and the advantages of making changes. You will work with your therapist to strike this balance and develop skills for better emotional regulation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

During motivational interviewing in Iowa, the client and therapist collaborate to identify any discrepancies in the client's current situation and future goals. By asking open ended questions and using reflective listening skills, the therapist encourages the client to reach their own conclusions and make a commitment to any needed changes in their life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

To achieve long term positive outcomes from treatment, it is important to incorporate life skills training. This equips you with new ways to manage challenges and navigate daily life. These skills encompass relationships, self care, and other day to day tasks.

Learning healthy eating habits is an important part of drug rehab in Iowa. Nutrition therapy protects you from future substance use by giving your body the energy and strength it needs. It will help you avoid cravings or "off" feelings that can lead to relapse.

Addiction recovery works best with recreational therapy activities that improve your physical health and provide emotional support. This holistic approach improves your overall physical and mental health, creates a sense of community, and helps reduce your cravings. Each of these factors is necessary to foster long term sobriety.

Specialists in creative arts therapy may incorporate methods such as cognitive therapies along with the arts to treat substance use disorders in Iowa. This combination of talk therapy and expressive therapy can be an effective way to help clients gain self discovery and begin the process of healing and recovery.

From the front desk to the doctors, everyone was professional and competent. Even though I had to wait some time, I got good care, and all my needs were addressed.

I want to thank the ICU team as well as hospice team for the wonderful care of my brother-in-law who passed today. He had multiple issues and we knew he wouldn't be with us for long. I had an MRI performed at the St. Lukes hospital in October and the female employee at the desk ehen I arrived was chatting on the phone with a friend or family member when I walked up to the desk to check in. She really didn't care that I was standing there, she finally told the person on the phone she would call them back. Then it just got worse from there. I wrote it in the paperwork and told 3 people that I needed them to give me something before the procedure, I am highly closterphobic! All 3 employees ignored me. I was put into the MRI machine without anything to calm me. I of course couldn't breathe and the nurse kept telling me to stop moving! I was hyperventilating the whole time and told her a couple of times I couldn't stop moving because I was closterphobic! So of course the MRI wasn't accurate and it didn't see the mass I have in my pelvic area. But I still had to pay for it! Which is complete crap!! I am writing this review to let other people know that getting an MRI is not a good idea if you have to get one at St. Lukes hospital. PLEASE check other options! Maybe PCI or Mercy hospital. In my opinion the employees of St.Lukes don't care! I have had many bad experiences with other doctors at Unity point as well. Just my opinion. Please make your own choice. My question is: Does St Lukes, Unity Point employees care about the people they are treating or is it just about a paycheck? Because your job is to care about the people you are supposed to be helping. Again just my opinion!

Recently, my wife had a bout of e-coli infection, which followed close behind her thyroid surgery. We called an ambulance at 11:30pm, and spent the following few days in treatment and recovery. The staff at St. Lukes provided superb care from start to finish! We want to especially thank the ER doctors and the nurses/assistants. We don’t know all the names, but Megyn and Eileen are outstanding.

My experience with the emergency room was humiliating. I became ill for a prolonged period of time, and I needed help. I'm a young college student with no family within hours of Cedar Rapids. I was scared to go to the hospital alone, so I brought 2 friends with me. My poor experience started with a doctor poking me with needles multiple times unable to find a vein. I was then brought to my room where a doctor and a nurse asked me to change into a gown, in front of them and the people I brought to the hospital with me, with no privacy, and then was told not to tie my gown in the back. I was then given an IV. Later, I had to pee in a cup for testing. A different nurse unhooked my IV bag and brought me down the hallway full of people to use the restroom (there was a restroom in my room), gown still untied in the back. She then handed me the cup and set my IV bag on the side railing of the PUBLIC toilet, disgusting and unsanitary. My doctor was unnecessarily rude toward me and I felt like I was not being taken seriously.

Response from the owner

I took my son to the emergency room this morning at 2:30am. We sat for 2 hours in the lobby with my child in incredible pain which I thought might be an appendicitis while waiting for a room. There was no sense of urgency, no help for my child. Once we got back to the room, the nurse put in an IV which they didn't even use. My child felt better and we were just going to leave when a doctor convinced me to continue with the CT scan. The CT scan took another 4 hours! We were at the EMERGENCY room for 6 hours! This is not emergency medicine if it takes this long. Its a complete contradiction. I pay a ton of money to have healthcare and insurance and if this is the care my son gets, then it should be free. What a complete waste of time, money, and effort. I will never go to this hospital again.

Response from the owner
We know it’s tough to wait when you don't feel well or are worried about a loved one. Because of patient privacy laws, we’re unable to chat about specific cases publicly. However, as a general matter, every patient is triaged to ensure critically ill patients are seen first. We work hard to see everyone as fast and safely as possible. If your health concern is urgent, but not an emergency, consider one of our walk-in clinics or using MyUnityPoint for virtual care. https://uph.link/virtualcare
