About Swedish Hospital Edmonds

Swedish Hospital Edmonds is a not for profit, hospital based behavioral health program located on the Swedish Edmonds Campus, offering inpatient psychiatric care for adults in Snohomish County, Washington.

The program serves adults ages 18 to 64 experiencing acute mental illness and integrates therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, group counseling and art therapy, pet therapy and nutrition, spirituality and pharmacology.

With a focus on stabilization, safety and continuity of care, the team partners with each patient to build a path toward lasting recovery and meaningful follow up support.

Acute Psychiatric Stabilization

The hospital’s core specialty is 24 hour inpatient behavioral health care for adults navigating acute psychiatric needs.

The 17 bed unit is embedded within a full service medical campus, allowing access to emergency, diagnostic and specialty services when coordinated care is needed.

Treatment planning is collaborative, with patients actively involved in decisions about their care and discharge.

Sessions may include CBT, group counseling and art therapy, pet therapy and outpatient psychiatry consultations, all aimed at stabilizing symptoms, maximizing functioning and preparing patients for ongoing support with a family physician or therapist after discharge.

A Therapeutic Environment

Patients benefit from a calm, therapeutic setting that includes three semi private rooms with mountain views.

As part of the larger Swedish Edmonds Campus with 217 licensed beds and Level IV Trauma emergency services, the program offers medical resources that many freestanding facilities cannot match.

Getting Started

Swedish Hospital Edmonds provides in person inpatient behavioral health services at its Edmonds campus, easily accessed from Interstate 5 and serving the greater Snohomish County region.

The hospital accepts a range of insurance plans listed on the Swedish insurance page and offers online bill pay, price estimate tools and financial assistance resources for qualifying patients.

I really appreciate how quickly the team acted when we first got to the ER. They took things seriously and got my partner in for a CT scan right away. What was hard was everything that came after. Once it was clear to staff it wasn’t life-threatening, we were there from about 6:00pm to 2:30am with very little sense of what was going on. Long stretches went by with no updates, and it’s tough to sit there for hours when it’s someone you care about and you don’t know what’s happening next. When she was finally sent in for the MRI, there was some confusion they missed that she was supposed to have both a non-contrast and a contrast MRI, which meant more waiting and another trip. At one point, even a nurse said, “I wish the doctors would actually talk to us” which made it feel like some of that time & anxiety could have been avoided with better communication. We’re grateful for the care; there’s no question about that. But clearer communication and better coordination would make a huge difference, not just for patients but for overall ER flow too.

I spent 11 hrs in the er yesterday. After all my testing and everything the "dr" i got stuck with was very very dismissive. The first dr i had before the shift change actually seemed to care and listen. Sadly this is the second time ive ended up with this "dr". First time he was very very judgmental telling me i could afford a different brand of medication based on the clothing i was wearing and the tattoos on my skin. During my 11 hrs there yesterday the nursing staff was more helpful than the dr i got stuck with again. Laughing when i was asking serious questions. Also if nothing is wrong with me why do i have a surgical consult on tuesday? If any of the admin from the hospital are reading this feel free to reach out.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Clients enrolled in an outpatient rehab program typically engage in multiple therapeutic sessions each week, but reside in their own homes and communities while receiving care. Outpatient treatment typically involves extensive addiction counseling, including family and group therapy. Most programs also emphasize recovery-focused life skills training and medical, mental health, and social support services to promote clients' sustained sobriety. Evening, night, weekend, and virtual services are widely available to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, students, and caregivers.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are frequently used to facilitate clients' transition from inpatient to outpatient care. Clients who are more stable may also choose to enter IOP rather than a residential rehab following detox. Intensive outpatient treatment typically consists of nine to 20 therapeutic hours per week, with services ranging from psychotherapy to recovery education to holistic care. Many programs offer medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid and/or alcohol addiction.

Rehab aftercare programs support clients as they focus on maintaining their sobriety after intensive (often inpatient) treatment. These programs adhere to a model of life-long recovery, addressing addiction disease as a chronic, relapsing condition. Rehab aftercare services vary widely based on the specific and evolving needs of the client, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, and 12 step program induction. Clients, case managers, and care teams typically collaborate on long-term care plans.

It can be difficult for family and friends to carry out a successful drug intervention in Washington on their own. Intervention services can help. These services typically include education about addiction and enabling behaviors, expert facilitation for interventions, and recommendations for appropriate treatment. Often, the involvement of intervention services can create a smooth transition into rehab.

Treatments

In Washington, those facing co-occurring mental health and substance abuse challenges can benefit from dual-diagnosis treatment centers. These specialized facilities integrate evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and experiential therapy to address both disorders at the same time.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Terrible experience, I have waited for more than 4 hours to be treated, I feel I'm paying hundreds of dollars to be sitting in a waiting room, this is unacceptable I will never return to this place again.
