About Bellewood & Brooklawn

Located in Louisville, Kentucky is Bellewood and Brooklawn. This organization provides supportive care to children and families who are working through difficult life experiences. This can include struggles with a mental health disorder, challenges with behavioral health, at risk behaviors, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and involvement with substance use.

Originally established to serve marginalized children in the community including orphans, this organization has evolved to provide supportive care to foster children, foster families, and parents who are seeking services to help their child overcome the life challenges they’re facing.

Today, you’ll find a number of services available, including residential care, outpatient programs, and trauma informed programming.

Residential Treatment for At-Risk Youth

There are different residential treatment programs for children and teens who have struggled with their mental health or impulse control, or have been victims of sexual abuse and other traumatic instances.

Their residential programming incorporates group counseling sessions for children who have experimented with substances such as drugs and alcohol. Through these sessions, kids and teens learn how to navigate compromising circumstances and identify triggers and emotions that lead them to abuse substances in the first place.

There are also psychiatry and psychotherapy services along with more structured programs that address more complex disorders and health issues.

On Site School

As children move through the residential treatment program, they’ll still be able to keep up with their education thanks to a partnership with the Jefferson County Public School District. There’s a campus on site where your child can maintain their academics and engage in a positive social life.

Community Based Services

Bellewood and Brooklawn has partnerships with different organizations in the community that can continue to support children and families. Teenagers transitioning into young adulthood will have access to safe housing, career development opportunities, independent living skills training, and even higher education services.

With these supports in place, kids and teens are equipped with the tools to lead a sober, healthy, and fruitful lifestyle.

My son has been here. Very unorganized no communication even if they happen to be helping these kids you wouldn t know because the communication is beyond awful. His therapist (Rochelle) has no showed on us three times with countless excuses. The supervisor of the cottage has been ignoring me for two days when I asked her for more communication. They change medication for weeks without telling you and don t even send it home on passes so you have no clue. My son had a contagious skin infection I had no clue about and they ASKED me to take him on pass without sending home the cream for it. They have all new staff in the cottage every single time we pick him up every couple of weeks. They tell him not to tell me stuff. He told me some graphic things a kid did to another kid and they yelled at him and told them he wasn t allowed to tell anyone. The list literally goes on. Like communication would clear up a lot of the issues but you will sit in the dark if you send your child here.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Nutrition therapy is a form of holistic therapy that is often incorporated into drug rehab programs in Kentucky. Eating healthy meals and learning how to choose the best foods for recovery helps you heal faster and helps prevent relapse.

Back in 2018/19, I had one foster child who had been in this place. They broke his ankle so bad it was never the same. Our other foster child, we were forced to take her there by her social worker. (She had issues.) It was awful. We spent the next 6 months going to visit her every single weekend. On one occasion, she got upset when we were leaving her there. She started to cry. The staff got mad and told her to shut up and then they took her to the ground violently. I was freaking out. Before I could get my phone out to take a video they shoved us out the door and covered the window. It was so traumatic. The child wasn't even fighting. Just crying. The big fat lady sat on her with her legs bent up over her head. She was begging them to stop because they were hurting her back. I came back the next weekend only to find bruises still on her. I brought it to the attention of DCF and Uspiritus management. I complained until I got a meeting with the whole bunch of jerks. They did nothing to the two abusers. They brushed it off. The child came back to us after 6 months. But, by that time, she was so messed up and blamed us for her being there. She told us things that I couldn't believe. Didn't believe until I watched a documentary on these types of places. She had been telling me the same things that every other kid is saying goes on in these places. She was only 10 years old. Even though we wanted to adopt her, she just couldn't trust us. I completely understand... If someone left me there, I would be probably be in jail. This place is not any better than it was back then. Don't trust them with your kids.

I was a former resident T this program 3 different times didn't help me at all the staff got away with whatever they wanted.Allowed children to be assaulted by staff and kiss alike. In my time there I hated it. Your punished for the reasons your placed in their to begin with.I wouldn't let any of my children within a five foot radius of either campus.

This place needs to be shut down. To treat children like that, that has already had a rough start in life is just insane, to choke a 7 year old IS UNACCEPTABLE 😡
