About Wellstar Behavioral Health Center

WellStar Behavioral Health Center is located in Austell, Georgia. The behavioral health department operates within the greater WellStar Medical Center, a leading provider of Hospital-level care throughout Atlanta’s Northwestern region.

Some of the services you’ll find here include medically supervised detox and inpatient treatment. They accept policies from most major insurance providers.

Acute Emergency Services

The emergency department here at WellStar is equipped to handle acute health struggles including overdoses and admissions involving a mental health crisis. As a hospital facility, you’ll find that services are highly clinical, but this also provides a strong first step in your journey to recovery If you’ve struggled with alcohol, drug, or opioid use.

Dual Diagnosis Support

When you get transferred to the behavioral health unit, you’ll work with a medical team that has experience addressing a range of coexisting struggles as well. This might include eating disorders, issues with impulse control, PTSD, and chronic opioid addiction.

Hospital Level Addiction Recovery

Their inpatient detox program is a strong avenue of support to turn to if you or a loved one need medical supervision to safely withdraw from your drug or alcohol use dependency.

Although this is a hospital setting, the inpatient services here are driven by best practices, but integrate person focused care so that you’ll have a plan of action to follow once your body is stabilized. Their inpatient program here is short term and you’ll get referred to different programs, typically residential treatment programs, to step down into within the community

As an LCSW for over 40 years with experience in numerous settings with professional co-workers, I was stunned at the rude, incompetent behavior of Dr. Michael Corbin when I attempted to meet with him regarding my patient who was currently hospitalized at Cobb WellStar Behavioral Health. He personally ejected me from the facility when I attempted to discuss my concerns after this high risk patient's suicide attempt stating he "did not have time for this" and refused to listen or even give an impression of concern for this young man. Given WellStar's stellar reputation in patient care in non-mental health settings, I suggest equal attention be given to the issues of brain illness known as "Behavioral Health." It is much needed...

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehab enables clients to receive addiction treatment while continuing to work and reside at home. Many programs offer evening, night, and weekend services so that clients may receive treatment on their own schedule. Outpatient treatment modalities typically include addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and/or medication assisted treatment (MAT). Many programs also provide step-down care, including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and standard outpatient services, to align with clients' evolving needs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients enrolled in an intensive outpatient program (IOP) travel to treatment centers for specialized care multiple times per week. Intensive outpatient treatment allows clients to receive robust care while continuing to live at home. Most programs require between nine and 20 treatment hours per week, with the frequency and intensive of sessions decreasing as clients stabilize. Services generally include a combination of addiction counseling, medication assisted treatment (MAT), recovery-focused life skills training, and holistic therapies.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants in 12 step recovery programs focus on personal growth to address the emotional and psychological factors contributing to their addiction. 12 step recovery is rooted in spiritual development, but religious affiliation isn't required. Regular group meetings and individualized support with the help of self-selected sponsors promote participants' sobriety as they work through the 12 steps, gaining insight into their addiction, taking responsibility for their life choices, and releasing control over that which is uncontrollable.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Designed for individuals who don't require round-the-clock care, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a form of outpatient care with a higher level of support. PHP treatment can be an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down option. With daily sessions lasting 6 to 8 hours, up to 5 days a week, a partial hospitalization program may offer medication management, relapse prevention techniques, and behavioral therapy interventions. PHP treatment can be fully or partially covered by insurance.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medical detox is the process of ridding the body of addictive substances in a medically supervised setting. If you become chemically dependent on a substance like alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Ativan), quitting abruptly can cause uncomfortable or even dangerous side effects. Licensed medical professionals ensure the process goes as safely and comfortably as possible while monitoring you 24/7 and administering any required medications,

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

While cognitive behavioral therapy in Georgia is unique for each person, this therapy follows a standard structure that has proven effective. Clients first learn about their substance use disorder, then learn and practice techniques such as coping, stress management, and resilience to change their thought and behavior patterns.

While each person is unique, the typical length for dialectical behavior therapy is six months to a year. You'll attend weekly hour long individual sessions with your therapist, as well as weekly group sessions. Homework between sessions often includes keeping a diary to track your emotions and behaviors. Your therapist uses this diary to guide the focus of each session.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

During rehab in Georgia, you may engage in motivational interviewing. This typically lasts one to two sessions and is designed to address any ambivalence you have toward change. It helps you explore your current situation and motivations and commit to making changes for the future.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

The good about this place is that the staff are very nice especially Sylvia she was the BEST! They will accommodate you and make sure you’re doing okay. The bad part is they don’t separate patients that have different levels of mental illnesses I feel like that is very dangerous and it can put other patients in distress who have to witness what the very mentally challenged patients are doing/saying. For me I have anxiety and witnessing patients yelling and screaming is distressing I understand it’s a mental hospital but I feel as if certain patients should be separated. The food was also absolutely disgusting. Like the food is something I would feed a dog. They had turkey and gravy it looked like slop. They had (beef?) and rice and the beef was doused in something that tasted like soy sauce. A lot of the time I just asked for a turkey sandwich. The food isn’t even made there some guy brings it in. That needs to be fixed asap we are people not animals we don’t eat slop. Other than the negatives it wasn’t a bad experience. Thank you to the staff that made it better!

I want to share the positives of this facility instead of focusing on the negatives. There are some AMAZING people who work here. Sylvia, Conner, Dexter, Nicholas, Katherine, & Adriel to name a few. Plus a very sweet night nurse and her name starts with a G, but i unfortunately can’t recall! You can tell when people are called to do something and I got to witness it in some of the staff. They protected me, cared for me, encouraged me, validated me, and taught me. In a place like this, it’s all about what you put in. There are problems everywhere, but if you focus on your healing journey you will be successful. It was so hard to say goodbye, which you would think i’d be on the edge of my seat to leave but that shows how well i was cared for. If you go here, i urge you to stay away from any negative patients, there will always be complainers. I urge you to focus on YOUR journey. I urge you to lean into the groups and guest speakers they offer. I am grateful to the staff that were good to me and to the patients who i got to know and were open in sharing their stories. I wish them the absolute best on their journeys. Thank you!

fire dexter if possible. a patient was showing no signs of serious aggression and he used his larger body to intimidate and coerce a patient into a holding room. this was distressing to me as i was also enrolled in the facility due to an unrelated mental health issue. largely, my experience at the facility was positive. i was able to deescalate from an elevated distress level. however, with doctors like dexter at the helm, that facility is sure to decline.

Terrifying experience. Roommate was walking around naked. Lady got forced to sign herself to stay another day or she'd be 1013 again and stay 4 more days. All for insurance money.
