About Beth Israel Lahey Health – Beverly Hospital

Beth Israel Lahey Health’s Beverly Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment services. The hospital is at 85 Herrick Street in Beverly, Massachusetts. They accept most private insurance, MassHealth, and Medicare. If you’re uninsured, they’ll work with you to apply for medical financial assistance.

Specialty Mental Health Services in Beverly, Massachusetts

Beverly is known as Graden City, and the hospital is only two miles from beautiful Rice’s Beach. The treatment team here offers services for children, adolescents, adults, and clients 65 and older. The inpatient team treats patients for psychotic disorders, substance use, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation as well as other behavioral health issues.

Unique ECT Approach

In addition to intensive therapy and medication, the hospital offers specialty services. These include transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

ECT is helpful for mania, catatonia, and treatment resistant depression. It may also work for clients who aren’t able to take medications.

TMS, like ECT, stimulates the brain through magnetic pulses. This is done as an outpatient and no anesthesia is required. TMS is for adults 40 and over with treatment resistant depression who have already tried ECT without success.

I went in for bloodwork and everyone along the journey was great! The receptionist was so kind and patient and Toni was my nurse, who was absolutely AMAZING! She was gentle and fast. The entire staff was professional and took pride in the care they gave.

I woke up dizzy and started violently vomiting. I decided to go to AJ er, and I was very disappointed with my treatment initially. I walked up to the receptionist to introduce myself, and she cut me off to ask for my ID. Very rude, didn't say hello or anything. As I'm going for my ID, she's pestering me saying anything with my name is fine.I dropped my ID, and asked her to calm down. I'm unsure if she relayed this, but I figure she did. I then proceeded to wait for 3 hours to be seen. When they did my initial assessment, all they checked was my blood pressure which was very high! They never checked my temperature and thus had no idea how critical it was for me to be seen. All they did was put a blood pressure cuff on and sent me on my way to wait.Several times I had to leave the facility to puke or gag. I was treated like the problem when in reality they were being unprofessional and not doing their jobs... They wrote my temp was 97.6 without even taking it.. go figure.. My RN that neglected to do her job had a sleeve of tattoos and didn't have a shade of empathy. The receptionist... it's literally her job to be friendly... was cold as ice...My PA arrived armed crossed in a defensive manner every time I talked to her. I figure it's because of what the receptionist relayed to her. She was great and very professional. I did feel better after receiving treatment, but this was a piss poor experience.

I was in recently and I wanted to say Frank the ER doctor along with the nursing staff I saw were THE most caring, nice, generally concerned staff I ve ever met with at an ER. I could not believe how nice they were and the overall attitude they all had. I ve been in a few times for my kids as well and always receive better treatment than the hospital actually closer to us so have started going here instead. I ve left feeling more confident than other locations knowing they spent the time to make sure my kids and I are good to go home and not brush us off.

Accepted Insurance

Beth Israel Lahey Health – Beverly Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Hospital Is Up to Something

Multiple reports of abuse of patients, hospital doesn't follow state guidelines during admissions process, 0 transparency during process, possibility of extensive billing fraud. doctors don't admit family in a timely fashion, ignore calls, and lie to cover their tracks.

Rooms are clean and spacious, and the food is pretty good for my standards. Although they require many unnecessary tests, in a vague effort to make more money it seems :/

DO NOT COME HERE FOR EMERGENCIES! YOU WILL BE WAITING. YOU WILL REGRET COMING HERE. I am in there hospital bed while writing this. They put their patients in hallway for hours and days, the staff and nurses are so rude, example a patient that was in the hallway told a nurse how bad his pain was and the nurse way saying she does not want to hear it literally how weird is that? If you can choose any other nearby ER go to seabrook nh or any other ER. The nurses are so rude literally and I am just warning anyone that would want to come here. do not do it!!!!

Our beautiful baby daughter was just born here on May 25th just before midnight. So thankful for the talented expert staff of doctors and nurses in the birth center here who were so kind, cordial and professional.

I wish I could give them zero stars, they are rude, wasted two hours of my time, provided zero service, charged my friend and I $900, they then will waste more of your time on the phone. Rude front desk lady until I called her out on her tone, she then begins to suck up to us as we leave after the two hours of disappointment waiting ...

A late night ER visit turned into being admitted. ER staff was good but the staff on the 2nd floor where my husband was admitted were excellent. The ER room wasn’t the cleanest and a bit run down. The room on the 2nd floor was clean but also showing a lot of wear and tear. Overall, the staff and care were very good and thorough. We would not hesitate to go back.

Absolute worst experience here yet. They had me talk to someone on video crisis chat after I told them I took 20 benzodiazepines. I literally didn’t remember anything or ever having a conversation. My boyfriend got a call that I was leaving tomorrow so they’re only holding me for 24 hours. I thought a section was 72 hours, but I guess I was wrong. They wouldn’t let me take a retake with the crisis… i understand people are sicker but mental health people can be just as sick. I live North 2 at Ana Jacques but the emergency room is a disaster. Thanks for nothing

As a patient at AJH, I write to express my sincere thanks and gratitude for: 1) the expert, world class surgical care received, 2) the remarkable service and exceptional empathy throughout my 5 day stay, and 3) the ship-shape facility, ward and related creature comforts. The Surgical Team was absolutely top class led by Doc Thurlow. The Nursing staff in the ward deserves huge praise, with many serving 10-20 years as a testament of caring and commitment.

I hope these new changes improve the hospital - especially the ER! I will only go there if it is my last option. I am forever scarred by the type of care I witnessed in the ER dept. Please train your staff on the meaning of empathy.

My 95 year old mom was scheduled for an ultrasound at 5:30 pm. We arrived at 5:15 and were told they were running 20 minutes behind. We have been waiting for over 2 hours and she has not been seen yet. She missed her dinner and her bedtime. There is no respect for people’s time especially the elderly.
