About Bournewood Hospital

Bournewood Hospital is a trusted treatment center for addiction and mental health in Brookline, Massachusetts. They have inpatient treatment for people who need care around the clock and a partial hospitalization program for people who do need active treatment but don’t need to live there.

This Brookline hospital treats teens ages 12-18 and adults ages 18 and older. Every client gets a custom treatment plan plus you’ll have meetings every week to talk about your plan and make sure it fits what you need. Programs have a lot of group therapy but they also have trauma therapy, addiction education, and medication management. The staff makes sure your family will be involved in your treatment too so you’ll have a strong and informed support system when you go home.

There are a couple features of the Bournewood Hospital that are especially interesting. First, they just opened a new 12 bed adult inpatient center. With only 11 other clients, you’ll be able to get plenty of attentive and personalized care. Second, they have a special partial hospitalization program for LGBTQIA+ clients who have drug or alcohol addiction and co-occurring disorders (meaning mental health issues along with substance use disorder). There aren’t many places like this so it can make sure these clients feel safe and accepted while they get the care they need.

I had a horrible experience here.Firstly, upon discharge they did not return the medications and Epi pen that I had with me during admission. I understand that they need to take these things away, but they never returned it. It s been over a month and I still do not have the medications, nor has anyone reached out.Note to admissions: if you promise someone a single room who desperately needs it, don t overbook yourself to the point that you need to relocate people. It wasn t my fault that someone also needed a single room. It wasn t my fault or responsibility, and I should not have been forced out of my room due to someone else needing a single.

South Shore Hospital admitted my son into this hospital. Do not allow them to put your family member here! If I knew better, I would not have let them chose this hospital, I would have said, find another place. Granted my son had a breakdown, unfortunately when he came home he was traumatized more! Felt like it was a step down from a prison! I was not allowed to see anything. Had to visit in the most uncomfortable room I've ever been in!! Something about this place was uncomfortable! Googled and found out they were getting kickbacks with sober houses, etc. Google for yourself! It's really terrible to put people who are having mental breakdowns in such horrible surroundings! They are not criminals, they are mentally ill! The nicest person I meet was the receptionist! If I could give this place a 0 I would!!! Rude therapist. Met a few kind people! Just not conducive to recovery for some people! Also, first time dealing with a mental health facility, know where your loved one's are going! I learned the system the hard way! They sec 12 your loved one for 5 days so you cannot get them out!!!!!Maybe in the late 1800s if you read the history that's on there website still existed, it may have been what that read!!!! But everything said in those days, No Longer Exists!!!The aftercare was weak! My son needed to see a therapist or psychiatrist right away, and he got two appts on telehealth a week after being released

Accepted Insurance

Bournewood Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Bournewood's inpatient programs are an appropriate choice for people needing a highly structured hospital setting where they can focus on addressing mental health and chemical dependency conditions and their recovery. Their inpatient system includes separate units for individuals needing more intensive treatment, as well as treatment for co-occurring mental health and addiction conditions.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as day treatment, allows you to receive rehab-level care while living at home. PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours of treatment each week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment plans can vary depending on your needs but typically includes relapse prevention, medication management, and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it’s important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand. What sets Bournewood apart is their commitment to having a psychiatrist physician on the campus 24 hours a day, every day as well as their triage, assessment and admissions process that also operates 24 hours a day, every day.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

If you are experiencing intense, negative emotions, dialectical behavior therapy can help you learn how to regulate painful emotions and manage the interpersonal situations that generate them. This method is often used during substance use treatment in Massachusetts to help you develop better coping skills and avoid relapse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I just stayed here these past 6 days and it's one of the best hospitals I've been to. I was on Emerson 1and met some amazing people. The staff Steven, Emily, and Alex and the rest of them went above and beyond to help while I was struggling through some things. If I ever need in patient again I hope I'd get to go back to Bournewood.

All staff here is professional, warm, and caring. The rooms here are spacious. Patients are given the opportunity for fresh air, art therapy, group therapy, music therapy, and psychoeducation groups. Medication is administered to encourage stability and comfort. Patients have access to drinks and snacks as well as meals throughout the day on the unit. Guests are welcome at certain times. A telephone is easily accessible to call family members. The unit is locked for safety.

Don’t go by the bad reviews. U can tell it’s from people who just didn’t want to be in a hospital. From my recent personal experience there, my stay was very very helpful! The staff, no matter what question I had, was always willing to help and never looked like u were burdening them. Staff members Virginia, Veronica and Steven, just to name a few, were exceptional! Listened to my every word and tried to help with any emotion that I had on display or any topic that was making me anxious. Many deep conversations that left me feeling a little better every time. I can’t thank them enough and I can’t say enough about them. Ty to the staff. The nurses, especially Kim were so on point and invested in my illnesses and what I needed without just throwing meds at me. They listened to my symptoms, got into depth with my symptoms and did not rush through the process until I felt my plan was right for me, that’s hard to come by in the mental healthcare world. I hope I don’t have to go to a hospital again but if I do I would ask to be sent there. Ty to everyone there

This is the worst hospital I have ever been to. I needed a medical bed. They didn’t provide it if they didn’t have it they should’ve sent me back to the hospital. I came from. They made so many mistakes that I have called a lawyer. This place is the pits it is, nothing like the pictures or the things it says it does. It does coloring groups and making pictures for the holidays coloring picture didn’t even have crayons or markers. There’s nothing to do. You can’t go outside. You can’t have your phone they say you could have your phone you can’t have your phone.
