About Discovery Behavioral Health

Discovery Behavioral Health used to be called Safe Harbor Recovery Center. They feature behavioral health care for addiction recovery and resilience for adults. You’ll find them located out in Port Townsend, Washington. They provide crisis services, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and substance use disorder treatment.

They’ve delivered nonprofit behavioral health and wellness programs for over 30 years. Your clinical team includes therapists and case managers who help identify your needs and the specific treatment modalities that can support your recovery. Their substance use disorder services include assessments of your condition to form the foundation for your customized treatment program.

You’ll participate in evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). These approaches can help you address underlying mental and behavioral health conditions that can fuel your addictions. That way, you’ll find healthier ways to deal with stress.

They also offer medically supervised opiate substitution treatment services. This is part of their medically assisted program. FDA-approved prescriptions help alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings and relapse potential in ongoing treatment. They don’t offer methadone, but they do use Suboxone, naloxone, Vivitrol, and disulfiram.

They also offer mental health treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions. This is a highly integrated program that treats both conditions simultaneously. The treatment programs meet the standards for deferred prosecution in the criminal justice system.

Once your program is complete, they’ll refer you to community resources to support your long-term sobriety and sustainable recovery. Even though they offer outpatient treatment, they’ll refer you to an inpatient setting when necessary.

They accept most major insurance plans and Medicaid. They verify your insurance coverage before beginning treatment. Private pay options are also available.

Took my teen son there when going through a bad divorce so he could learn to deal with things. He told the counselor he didn't want his father to know he was getting therapy. By the weekend when he went to visitation with his father his father knew he was in therapy because the therapist called his father and told him what they were seeing him for against my sons wishes. Visitation was a nightmare and my son never went to get help again and list a lit of trust in adults after.

Called to adjust an appointment for my daughter who isn t able to do so on her own, something simple. Front desk was very polite and professional and explained the nurse could assist us with the change. I was transferred to a nurse who, from the moment she answered, had a horrible attitude. She refused to assist me with a simple change, was not listening to me or my request and completely lacked any compassion or bedside manner. I have never had a medical professional act this way for no reason other than she was having a bad day and decided to take it out on me. If I had been a patient or had my daughter attempted the call, I can imagine how she would have affected someone that was in need of mental health services. I have worked in nursing, have family who are also doctors and nurses and this nurse is one who needs to retrain on how to leave personal issues behind, show compassion, and understanding especially when working in the sensitive field of mental health. Better yet, find a different field of nursing since she s clearly not a person who is suited for the mental health field.

Accepted Insurance

Discovery Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Effective drug rehab in Washington integrates care for the whole person, offering comprehensive solutions to addiction. Treatment methods address mental, physical, and relational aspects of substance abuse.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

This place should be shut down. Dirty, gross and unprofessional. They do not retain their staff. I’ve shown up for two appointments that they say they’ve canceled, But I did not receive a call or a text to cancel. Trying to get refills on prescriptions when the staff leaves and they make you wait months to see someone else. Most of their therapists seem to still be in school. My teen was sent home with six prescriptions, including antipsychotics. No one would speak to me about the prescriptions or what to watch for possible side effects. Overall, very disappointed.

Horrible place to go. Wow, I can’t even begin to say all the things that happen with this place. This is the the worst treatment I have ever seen. If you want to save your kids, take them to somewhere that is educated with adolescents. Somewhere that cares. Anywhere but here. KMH is worth the drive. Condescending, rude staff. From the office, to the therapist, to the others. What a joke. Honestly, the worst place to seek refuge. How does this place even have a license?? Be warned.

I do not feel safe going there. People look at the reviews most all of them are very poor. My experience is Jim the director will not return emails for communication regarding his real team and the mistakes that they have made and the way that he has instructed his employees to avoid me because of his employees mistakes they're not just employees mistakes Jim has swept things under the carpet because he can't deal with him. This place is not professional. Jim if you can't handle the job leave just like all the others have left

Parents of adolescents BEWARE! Therapist have very little experience with pre-teen/ teenagers in full crisis. Take your children to Kitsap Mental Health! Better understanding, better care, more knowledge, and amazing staff. Office staff rude. Nurses are condescending and rude. No accountability for poor service, failures on their part. Huge disappointment! Beware!
